jeff ranieri following the fire this whole afternoon. and jeff, we have seen temperatures near 100 degrees. fortunately has gone down just a tiny bit right now. >> we have seen temperatures begin to cool down a few degrees, but still very hot on the fire lines. right now, 90 degrees at the location of this fire. the thing that has also been helping firefighters is the wind, south-southwest at 6. so generally light. that's why you're seeing smoke go straight up into the atmosphere. however, within the fire, we expect erratic winds that could be 20 to 25 miles per hour. dangerously low humidity. temperatures in the 80s at 7:00 tonight. as we get into the location of the fire, right here at loma prieta, up at about 3,500 feet. and two of the areas of biggest concern continue to be cost at that loma road and loma which i keita road where the doppler radar is picking up the heaviest smoke and, of course, also the fire moving in that direction. i also want to alert our viewers in morgan hill, also down at gilroy, this plume of smoke likely coul

we continue our team coverage with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff? >> temperatures have dropped 20 degrees from what we experienced earlier this week, as we go ahead and get a look at our microclimate weather. currently 74 degrees on the fire lines. winds have picked up a little bit, even though it's the cooler direction, that's not helping firefighters so much, out of the west at 13. humidity up at 57%, that's the good news. eventually 60s by 7, 8, and 9:00 tonight. we are forecasting a change in the wind for tomorrow, that's going to be the biggest threat against this threat. we'll go from wind of about 9 miles per hour tonight to winds increasing up to 22 miles per hour by friday evening. so gusty on friday, and then check it out, by this weekend numbers go even cooler. on sunday, a high of 67 degrees and the possibility of some rain. we're tracking that rain forecast in detail, coming up in about 14 minutes. >> thanks, jeff. >>> we are constantly updating our digital platforms with new information on the loma fire, including evacuation orders. ge

jeff ranieri is tracking the storm and joins us with more on its path. jeff. >> right now, hermine is able to hold on to its strength because you it is so close to the atlantic. some of the circulation around this is able to pull up the warmer weather to continue to fuel this storm. it is a tropical storm, winds at 50 miles per hour, central pressure 995 milobars. this will remain a tropical storm through tomorrow as it pushes into north carolina, it will last not only into saturday along the eastern seaboard but also possibly into next monday. even though it exits south of delaware by saturday night, it may restrengthen to a hurricane again by monday. we could be talking about this storm system all the way into mid, late next week. if you are headed to the east coast this weekend, you really need to watch out, especially here where we have this bulls eye of heavy rain for the carolinas throughout delaware. g go to hawaii, right now looks like they've been missed by what could have been a direct hit by hurricane lester, but watch the path closely. >> high

and jeff ranieri tracking the weather conditions that could be changing. robert, how is that fire fight going now? >> reporter: well, jessica, you heard raj mention 1500 acres are burned and right now only 5% containment. they expect the acheerage burn to go up. they're not sure about the containment. you see the scene behind me. we're near the front end of this fire in santa cruz county. i asked if firefighters were making good progress. he said simply "we're making progress." we watched flames overwhelm one structure after another. the scene at the fire front line was not encouraging. the loma fire continued to burn through the santa cruz mountains as flames hit patches of thick vegetation. home owners began evacuating last night, a little more in a hurry today. >> the fire was getting real close to the house over here to the south and so we bailed out early this morning. after we got everything put away. >> it's burning pretty fast and they're hitting it hard with all these bombers right here. >> reporter: cal fire and the other firefighting agencies ke

jeff ranieri is here tracking both staorms. >> the second is is lester. you can see it well away from the hawaiian islands, but madeleine right now beginning to bear down on the big island. currently, a category 1. winds at 75 miles per hour. you're going to be able to see some of these outer rain bands starting to spiral into the southern and central portion of the big island. continuing to move to the south here by tond, by 11:00 p.m. winds at 65 miles per hour, so will be spared a direct hit. still, quite a few impacts expected this ooempk. so, the big island is the focus for some of the worst weather. rain 1 to 4 inches, but some of the higher elevations in the mountains koud get up to 6 inches and the threat of flooding. now, once this storm exits on thursday, there will be another storm system, hurricane lester, by saturday morning, all the way into sunday. looks like it will stay north of the islands, but we'll be --ping a close eye on it. u thanks so much. track thing progress of these anorms on air and online. just download the nbc bay area app.

i'm meteorologist jeff ranieri. beach plans tomorrow for labor day weekend, starting of on cool with fog in santa cruz by afternoon, sun and low 70s. rest of the labor day weekend in a you few minutes. earthquake or larger will rattle . >>> it's sobering statement. scientists believe there's a 98% chance a 6.0 earthquake or larger will rattle the bay area sometime in the next 30 years. in order to prepare nearly $14 billion of your tax dollars have been spent upgrading bridges across the state. the question is will the bridges if the bay area be able to withstand the next major rumble. investigative reporter has been digging into that very question. >> reporter: guys, there are 25,000 bridges across california, over 3,000 have been retrofitted to protect you in event of the next major earthquake, but some of those improvements happened decades ago? as we discovered, they now need to be upgraded fwen. the question is how much longer can we afford to wait. >> we're living in a sense on boroed time. >> reporter: david

our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri, is tracking the weather conditions on the fire lines, and jeff, a big change is coming. >> dramatically cooler weather over the next 72 hours, and raj and janelle, i wanted to give also the viewers -- all of you at home, another vantage point ofú)sú fire from san jose. and the real interesting thing today, when you see it off towards the sky, it was hard not to look at it, driving anywhere near the south bay. is that smoke is really compressed close to the surface, and that's from a hot area of high pressure aloft. with it, close to the surface, the smoke, that is, morgan hill and gilroy, will remain the biggest threats here of possibly breathing that smoke. so if you smell it, you certainly want to limit your outdoor ex0íhe. right now, 920 degrees. winds relatively light, 3 miles per hour. that's helping firefighters. but the low humidity hurting, only 16% very dry air. but temperatures drop into the 70s by 9:00 and 10:00 tonight. what about the extended forecast? we talked about the relief. here it is. you can see as we head throughout thursda

. >> our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri is here pm. >> >> it was a nice way to wake up and get your day started. as you get a look at the microclimate forecast outside, we have mostly sunny skies in the inland valleys. this is what we're talking about today. only a high of 71 in concord. dropping to the 50s by the next hour. that's a major departure from where we have been and if we compare from today to the averages, we were 2 to 11 degrees cooler. and a high of 74 in livermore. and it was windy as the cold air rushed in today. san francisco, 33 with a few slight delays and livermore with a top gust at 28 out of the west. i think it will be windier tomorrow as the cooler air will get more adjusted across the west. it's dropping in from the dakotas and well up from canada. it's helping drag down the chilly air for us. it looks good to stay for at least two day thins forecas in . we start out with drizzle near the coast and that will give you a foggy start for the morning hours. by the afternoon on tuesday, we'll gradually see that sunshine build back. so, in terms of our temperatu t
