we are covering the fires from all angle, let's begin with our chief meteorologist this fire, jeff ranieri. >> it is one of the forecasts where the stability could put a lightning strike in this location or that location. it is an erratic pattern we are seeing with this humidity so that's why the entire bay area is under the flat line warning until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. more isolated thunderstorms that could produce lightning strikes possible. everybody has to be on alert. let's get you look at our radar. we are tracking some rainfall off to the south. i did have a lightning south way out here in the pacific. it is more of how unstable this air is that's moving off to the north. we do think some of this is beginning to see things organize a little bit better here and as you put a loop on it, it is moving from the south to the north. we'll be monitoring it extremely closely tonight for any lightning or thunderstorms that may spark any fires. what about conditions that's not good. find a fire that's closest to you that you care about and what's happening on those fire lines. you can see our fi

let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff, what can we expect?re you seeing any of that lightning and high wind just yet? >> i'm seeing some lightning strikes down towards the central coast. for us we have had a few spotty showers but no lightning strikes. so there's a little bit of good news right now, although the threat of isolated lightning will continue into tomorrow. and that's when i want to underscore right now is that our red flag fire warning is in effect until 5:00 p.m. monday. we're getting a lot of text alerts. you're hearing a lot of information from your neighbors, your friends. i just wanted to set you straight on exactly what we're dealing with. and that chance is for the entire bay area from the north bay to the south bay where these isolated lightning strikes could spark more fires. the best tool to see thunderstorms, you'll notice here we do have some green, some areas of rainfall. that's moved through some quick-moving showers. now this looks a little bit worse than it is because the lower atmosphere is relatively dry. so a l

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now. jeff, this is only the beginning of the this dangerous heat. >> yeah, it is going to continue as we head throughout next week. it was just slightly sweltering out there. we shattered records. temperatures got up as high as 106 in concord, also in livermore. and one of the hottest down into gilroy, 107 today. even san jose and downtown up to 103, which was also a new record. and downtown san francisco, 95 degrees. now, we haven't seen temperatures like this since 2017 for august this widespread, so it's been a couple of years. right now take a look at the heat. we're holding on to 84 degrees in livermore. that's close to where we should be for the daytime high. so we are not cooling off really all that much this hour. heat warning in effect until next wednesday. these areas in red over fairfield, vallejo, concord, livermore, san jose, and morgan hill will all see temperatures ranging 96 to 104 on and off as we head into next week's forecast. look at this. tomorrow morning, 9:00 a.m., st

let's bring in jeff ranieri. what are you seeing for us tomorrow, jeff? >> well, i do think we'll get back to some unhealthy levels of air quality for parts of the bay area. but, again, some of the best air quality right now that we have seen since these fires really started to rage last week. so let's get a look at what's happening right now. you can see in san francisco it's that fog moving in, really helping to flush out this smoke and send it off towards the east. and these numbers, astonishing here. we are all in the green, which is good. my lowest number in napa at 31. livermore, 36. san jose now at 49. so good air quality right now, this very second across the entire bay area. tomorrow as the foggy breeze begins to relax, i do expect us too go up to unhealthy levels of air here across the bay area except for the beaches and the coast, which still should stay in the good category. now, the other thing that's helping firefighters right now is some increased humidity from the fog. we have 81% humidity up towards the north bay. 8% for t 87% for the sou

let's get to jeff ranieri. when will we see relief? >> some fog tomorrow morning will stir up a little bit but we'll remain in the unhealthy category through tomorrow. last night and early tomorrow morning, we dodged the bullet, we had thunderstorms in the sierra foothills and getting close to the bay area but no lightning strikes. that was some good news. we got a few showers. i wanted to show you the doppler radar and you can see as this loops around, look at all the lightning strikes we had here across the sierra and also the central valley. here we go, it is going to start to loop around here in about three seconds, right about now and take your eyes right there to the interstate 5 corridor and you can see right there quite a few lightning strikes in the early morning hours. we got real lucky on that. smoke for the interior valley. a little bit of fog beginning to mix in at the current moment. our fire forecast here across the three main fire zones we'll see some cooler weather tomorrow, wind gusts of only 20 miles per hour. that's

jeff ranieri is back with us. we are talking about so many people being evacuated there and a lot more in the bay area. a lot is happening with our weather journey. >> this hurricane is devastated and catastrophic if people did not listen to warnings. i want to start off even though we have our own weather emergency here with the wildfires, just in case if you have fends riends or family in area. the center of the storm will be going over port arthur texas and also close to lake charles, louisiana. that kinds of looks to be ground zero for this hurricane. a storm surge of the coast of 10 or 20 feet. family or friends living on the coast they have to evacuate because of the storm surge. rain 6 to 20 inches and flooding and huge danger and wind gusts of 150 miles per hour. we'll have more on nbcbayarea.com, let's go ahead and move back to our bay area weather. air quality is the best it has been since the fire started at this moment because of that fog helping to ak lict like a big f and pushing the smoke out of her

. >> let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. just talk about our improved air quality and maybe some of the conditions the firefighters are fighting right now. jeff? >> such great news weather wise. it's giving firefighters a leg up, giving us the ability to go outside and breathe in air not filled with smoke. as we bring you into the maps, i wanted to reset things for you, get a nice, wide look at the three fire zones. what the temperatures are right now, what my forecast is for tomorrow. and then you can see this other new thing that i have added to my map. how much growth we have seen over the past 24 hours. 5,000 hours growth here in the north bay. tomorrow, 91 degrees, wind gusts up to 20 and humidity at 26%. that really is continued good news for the firefighters. 5,000 acres is quite a bit smaller than the growth we had seen in a 24-hour period. so, again, things are looking better. down to the south bay, 2,000 acres growth over the past 24 hours. tomorrow, 87 degrees, humidity at 31%. look at the humidity near the coastli

let's bring in jeff ranieri and talk about the air quality, you were outside and much better today. >> that's the reason that i am outside today and good enough that i can come out here and breathe this air. it is such a relief. we are still going to have a few trouble spots because of these fires continue to burn. everyone's numbers had gotten a lot better. all of these greens and numbers, this is good to go and good air quality for most of the bay area. we are unhealthy in the south bay and san jose. that's because you are so close to the fire lines. the woodward fire in the reyes area is pushing in the valleys. tomorrow the two trouble spots will in the north bay and south bay. on the fire lines today, temperatures were down, 70s and 8 80s. winds not that gusty. we have the added humidity from the fog moving on in. we talk more about warmer temperatures on the way. we'll give you the complete forecast and i will have it for you in ten minutes. >>> another look from our nbc bay area sky ranger. a live look, we are talking about our air quality but it is still not where it needs to b

jeff ranieri's here. about our hot weather and some of the concerns going with it these next few days, jeff. >> yeah, it's going to be dangerous. really, the most, as we head through tomorrow with another big surge in temperatures. we are going well above 101 degrees here for some of those inland cities. also a little bit humid out here. i know you felt it if you were out here for more than ten to 15 minutes. a little bit more like the east coast outside. let's get a look over the east bay. this is near concord. right now, 98 degrees after hitting low 100s, but it's going to be a slow dropoff. if you don't have ac, your house is going to have a hard time cooling off. here's a look at the complex pattern. we have remnants of what was once tropical storm alita, pushing in some lightning, thunderstorms and humidity to california. and the bigger item, of course, is this hot air coming from that area of high pressure. this continues to move into place through tomorrow. certainly, keeping that hot air with us.

and that leads us to our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. janelle and jeff, we made it. we keep making it to friday and we've done it again. slowly but surely. >>> it feels so good. smell of barbecue here in the neighborhood right now. we still have some sun out and a little bit of a breeze. real comfortable evening tonight. now the big change, we are undergoing tomorrow morning it is a lot less in the way of cloud cover and will start us off with an enjoyable saturday morning. our fog map, most of the fog is up against the immediate coastline. not much else across the north bay, east bay or south bay for the inland valley. so rolling through tomorrow morning, this will start us off with slightly warmer temperatures. with less in the way of fog. so we're going up to 63 here for the south bay. 61 in the peninsula and 64 in the tri-valley. the coldest air near the fog in san francisco at 59. and the north bay at 58. now my forecast tomorrow with less fog does warm up another three to six degrees. but i don't think it will be too dangerous levels. in the south bay at 88 in

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now. jeff, we've had some cooler temperatures in the last couple of days but how long is that going to stay for? >> well, tomorrow we do have an increase in the heat and then we are looking at some even hotter weather ahead. unfortunately, so really right now into tomorrow morning, if they can make some more headway on this, you know, that's just going to set us up even better hopefully to battle the heat on the way. we'll get you a look at the conditions on the fire lines and you'll be able to see that currently we do have some cooler weather for the czu lightning complex, also in the south bay with 50s. it's not that gusty. winds just 10 to 20 miles per hour. still a mild 73 up here towards the north bay. notice tomorrow we go to a hotter 95 in the north bay. south bay will be at 90 and over towards the santa cruz mountains, 80 degrees. now, the other thing we've been following is the woodward fire, and the way that the wind is blowing tomorrow, this is real important here. the smoke is g

let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. considering what the air quality is like this weekend and what are we seeing in terms of temperature or wind for firefighters? >>> well the air quality, we're going back and forth into this unhealthy range. wind gusts into the to gusty but it will stay warm but we don't have a heat wave into the upcong right now on the live view from tiburon toward the south. there is the fog in san francisco. you could see the real thin layer on the bottom of the screen and everything above this is all smoke. i want to give you a perspective of what we're dealing with and it is these winds coming from the north to the south that is pushing smoke from the north bay fires down here through the east bay, the peninsula, and also for the south bay as well. so the current air quality situation not the best we've seen over the past two days. everybody is pretty much in the moderate zone except for palo alto which is unhealthy. you have the fire off to the south and the smoke coming from the north so it is k

jeff ranieri teased something to show us, a map about our air quality? >> yes. super dramatic picture for us right now. over the past two to three hours we've seen the fog move and it is hoped to stir out of the smoke near the coast, also the bay, even for parts of contra costa county right now. so you could see this split screen i've put together and the dramatic shot is in san francisco. look on the left-hand side of your screen. that is not smoke. that is some very thick fog moving in. even a little bit of drizzle as well. so this is helping to flush out this smoke. we had that in san francisco. and while livermore still had some thick smoke, it is actually improving a little bit. i know it is hard to tell from that view. but things are getting a little bit better right now from the foggy breeze that is starting to return. so that is part one of things that i wanted to show you. let's move on to next thing. we just were narrowly missed by thunderstorms earlier this morning. radar is quiet right now. but i do want to draw your attention to something i'm follow

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us now with more. jeff, i know you found some relief in the east bay, but other areas like the peninsula pretty much socked in with smoke today. >> yeah, it's just such a split picture right now because we have the fog at the coastline and that foggy breeze is helping to clear out the beaches, but it has to go somewhere, so it is getting trapped in other parts of the bay area. so really depending on where you are, it's either good or extremely bad. so i wanted to give you this view right now of what we're dealing with. you can see in san francisco we have the foggy evening sea breeze starting to return. you'll be able to see on this live sky camera view that fog is rolling in pretty thick right now. look at these improvements. mill valley, san francisco, oakland all with good air quality. as of the past 30 minutes. concord now dropping to 85, which is moderate. napa dropping to 133. still unhealthy there. and also unhealthy for livermore and san jose as you are just so close to that large fire burning i

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking our air quality and conditions on the fire lines. firefighters got some help from mother nature today. >> yeah. big break in the forecast today as we had that fog build really aggressively at the coastline, and it's helping to stir up the atmosphere and clear out some of the lower levels, which not only help with the air quality but some of that fog is also increasing the moisture along the fire lines. so let's get a look. you can see this live sky camera on the left-hand side of the screen. that's san francisco. it's not smoke but again fog that's moving in with some drizzle. and take a look at our air quality here. you can see over san francisco, it's rating a 60, which is considered moderate. we've got the key at the top of the screen. also oakland at 95 and palo alto, 91. so that is much, much better albeit in san jose and livermore, you're in that red color, which remains unhealthy. what's happening on the fire lines right now? we have some cooler 60s and 70s, but notice tomorrow. down here in the south bay, 8 5 degrees for the

homes and businesses remain under evacuation order. >> let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. this is what we've been waiting for the past week and a half, jeff. are we on the right track here when it comes to our air quality? >> i think most certainly. you know, it's all due to that fog in the coastline. we have two days in a row helping to bring out the air. right now getting this headway is so extremely important. this first graphic i'm starting off right now, i wanted to put it into perspective the actual fire danger. these are the same numbers firefighters use to rate the fire danger. so it's on a scale. fire burn index is 75 tonight. that's a big drop from where we've been lately. we're still considered to be in the high category as you can see right here, but tomorrow it drops to 47, which is considered moderate. and that, again, is due to the fog we have at the coastline, increased moisture and winds that do not look too gusty. that is good news. of course, we've had just so many acres burned, over 747,000 acres across the bay area burned. temperatures right now in th

let's bring in jeff ranieri. is it good enough for us to get outdoors this weekend? >> we're going to have to watch it real and off situations for us. as we get a look right now, we have made some improvement at this hour due to the fog that's pretty strong at the coastline. you can see these green areas in santa rosa, novato, napa, and san francisco. that's good air quality. moderate for oakland, fremont, palo alto, redwood city, and san jose. we're still left with some unhealthy air back here towards livermorng us now. but when the fog takes a break tomorrow, we will see some unhealthy air here from the north bay down to the south bay with the coast and the beaches in the moderate. fire update. i do want to share these brand-new numbers. this is great news. in the south bay, the scu lightning complex is now 40% contained. 35% contained in the north bay and down to the south bay in the santa cruz mountains, 27% containment on that fire. i'll have details on what we can expect on the fhe coming up in about ten mi
