jeff ranieri is tracking the smoke and air quality forecast as we head toward the weekend. jeff's going to join us in about 15 minutes from now. >>> well, tonight the pentagon says u.s. troops are ramping up evacuations out of afghanistan. so far 7,000 afghan civilians have been evacuated. army officials say the troops now have enough aircraft to get 5,000 to 9,000 people out a day. however, that still depends on how many people have been processed and other factors like the weather. let's show you some video out of the outside gates of the kabul airport. you can see crowds of people lined up, desperate to flee. taliban soldiers are stationed there, demanding to see documents before allowing people to approach the gates. many people say they don't have passports, so when the gates opened dozens tried to push through. the taliban did fire occasional warning shots to disperse the crowds. and check out this video. that's u.s. soldiers helping an afghan woman over the wall into the kabul airport. a journalist working for rise to peace shot that video. once people make it over th

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. jeff, thom was talking about high, gusty winds, what are the conditions? >> really the worst conditions on the map here, that's why the evacuations are in place. if you know one living there and deciding to stay even asked to evacuate, may want to urge them to think twice. look at red flag fire warnings. include the caldor fire and dixie and antelope fires. mountain gusts 20 and 50 out of the southwest, highest peaks could gust over 50 miles per hour and humidity 5% to 15%. show you the fire zone. there's a lot happening but focus in on the growth, mostly eastern side of the fire, kooib urz to twin bridges. gusts tonight, 20 to 50 and seeing same forecast through tomorrow. closer, meyers in jeopardy, six miles south of south lake tahoe. next 48 hours with the fire warnings in place. >> part of the reason that sierra ski resort survived is because of this. using snow making machines to spray water on to the buildings, effort to save the resort from the flames. also using sprinklers. rig

thank you, chris. >>> jeff ranieri here is a super summer forecast. >> exactly. the super on the emphasis on the east bay, as we're going to see more 90s, close 100. we're going to start off with a very active weather pattern. there is a lot happening out here. we have an area of high pressure off to the north produce extremely unusual heat toward portland and seattle. temperatures right near 100. a little bit of that moving down, and then this area of low pressure to the south is pulling up warmer air, even a thunderstorm. our thunderstorm chances right now look low from this, but we will be watching out for dry lightning. the better bet is humidity. we have these two things working to bring us hotter weather inland. let's take it more off to the south, and there's a third component we are tracking. we have tropical storm kevin. and while this is pulling away from the united states, we will see some of that humidity as well move in this week. so hot inland with humidity as we roll through the next couple days. we know a lot of of you are getting your kids back t

let's bring in jeff ranieri. i know you're tracking those strong winds heading to the bay area. what is the timeline? >> i think right around 11:00, 11:30 tonight we'll see things ramp up. remember the strongest winds will be in the mountains, 1,000 feet and above, where we'll get those higher gusts. the eastern side of the south bay, 20-50 miles per hour in the mountains, down into lower elevations, 10-25 the okay at sea level, but the humidity is dropping down to 10%. we're focussing in on where i think the wind's going to be the gustiest. it begins to pop right there to the north, off to the east of napa. as we advance this into tomorrow morning you're going to start to see the wind really kind of drive down, especially right around the napa mountains and toward the east. that's where i do expect some of the strongest gusts in that 40-50 miles per hour range as you can see right there. at the same time tomorrow morning not as strong at the lower elevations. 10-25, as we talked about. it's one of those situations where they might cut off your power, but although wind is up in

let's bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri and our meteorologist rob mayeda. jeff, what's the biggest threat? we just heard the mayor talking about that. what's the biggest threat of where this fire is headed? >> it's really going to be the wind. as you mentioned, i'm glad people are listening to those evacuations, because we can't control mother nature. what we can do is take a look at what we have coming our way and make our best decisions. right now, evacuating, listening to those orders is going to be the best solution here. wind gust, 20-50 miles per hour. and then on this map, can you see all these fire icons. that's where the fire's been most active on that eastern flank of the fire, because the wind is coming out of the southwest. it's pushing these flames closer and closer. >> last night we were at 19% containment and today 14%. so it spread and grew. >> i am not surprised at all. it is dry out there. and you get a little wind kicking up and this is unfortunately the recipe for fires to spread. that's why i'm so glad people are listening to those order

jeff ranieri joins us here. this summer has been sweltering.er so hot. >> well, you know, when you look across the map we've dug through that data. it's all about this area of hot, high pressure. that's why arizona, las vegas, the pacific northwest has seen so much more heat. >> it's not just us. >> than normal. while we've had this high area of pressure, the one thing that has saved us, though, has been the fog. in san francisco, this was the first july they didn't reach 70 for the first time in 70 years. this fog in large part, this fog kept us out of some of the worst heat that helped us to break that record. >> i was in arizona one weekend, and it was 116 degrees. it was stunning. how does our summer here, we've got this fog, which is great, how does this summer compare to last summer? >> it's a lot better. >> really? >> we're kind of in this bubble with this fog. last summer we had 12 days at 100 degrees and hotter and the hottest september day ever, 112 back in 2020. now this year, because of that fog, again, we're in this isolated bubble

let's bring in jeff ranieri. he's tracking the fire and the conditions. >> the worsening conditions for folks who could be living up here that's why evacuation warnings were put into place. glad to see a lot of people heeding that warning. the map illustrates everything we're tracking. most of the fire growth has been on the eastern side today. now the way the wind's blowing, it's continuing to push any flames and embers toward south lake tahoe. that's why we had the evacuations. wind gusts tonight, 20-50 miles per hour. same wind forecast as we roll through tomorrow. let's get you a closer view of this, it's six miles to the south of south lake tahoe. the next city in jeopardy is unfortunately, myers. not only red flag warnings in place for the caldor fire but for the dixie and antelope fire as well. really tough next 48 hours with the red flag warnings in effect until 11:00 p.m. wednesday. >> the evacuations are changing by the hour. to get a detailed look at who has to evacuate, go to our website, nbcbayarea.c

jeff ranieri tracking where that fire is going and the heat. >> you can see on the satellite view all the different smoke plumes from the fires that remain off to the north, which includes the dixie fire. there's the caldor fire right there. the way the wind pattern was, the strongest and thickest smoke moved off to the north and east, away from the bay area. right now our air quality is moderate, and i expect a moderate forecast for the air quality tomorrow. that means it's okay to be outside, okay to breathe that air. let's get you outside to the caldor fire. 20 miles south of lake tahoe is that fire. with that said, there are so many small towns in the path of this that have already been impacted. so we'll get you in closer here. i only see temperatures in the 60s tomorrow. so the weather is helping firefighters, considering we're in august. but the way the wind direction is blowing out of the south, this would continue to try to push more of these flames right towards that interstate or highway 50 corridor. we'll take more looks at our own weather and the heat later this week, i'v

let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri who's tracking the smoke. and jeff, you told us earlier you're expecting maybe the weekend? >> yeah, certainly looks like we're going to get some changes in here that would help to push the smoke out of here as we head into this weekend's forecast. look at this view. i've shown it a couple of times tonight but this really illustrates what a lot of us in the bay area are dealing with, especially in the north bay and the east bay where that smoke is the worst. the visibility really reduced. when it comes to the air quality unhealthy here in the north bay. also the east bay and the south bay. let's give you a closer look at the smoke forecast. tonight there's no change. you can see all the orange and red on this map. that is the smoke. through tomorrow morning there's really no big changes as it stays put. even through tomorrow night. but once we head into saturday look how that smoke starts to move off toward the east. i think we'll be left with some hazy skies on saturday but a lot of the unhealthy sploek should
