jeff toobin, i want your thoughts out of the gate based on what you saw over the weekend digging into the guts of the report. >> i think there is a strong case that the president committed obstruction of justice. the fact that there are ten separate episodes, all pointing in the same direction are extremely probative, as the lawyers say. the fact that it's not one incident, two incidents, it's ten incidents of the president trying to interfere with the mueller investigation. and before the mueller investigation. that's a very separate question from whether there will be or should be an actual impeachment proceeding which i think is not going to happen under any circumstances. >> i don't know about that, jeffrey. feels like it's gaining momentum. some candidates who are sitting senators are beginning to talk about it. the feeling today is and, david, i want your thoughts on this. if you don't do something, if you are congress, then you are saying the president is above the law. you're saying all of this wrongdoing that's been exposed for political reasons we can't do anything >> i thin

jeffrey toobin is with us as well, as well as cnn political analyst carl bernstein. jeff, what do you make of what the attorney general said today? is he on firm grounds in terms of what he's indicating? >> again, i don't want to prejudge. we'll see how much of the report he actually sensors. he has set up four categories that could be very broad and swallow a great deal of the report. grand jury material, which can be defined in several different ways, broadly or narrowly. classified information, which the intelligence agencies are famous for overclassifying. material relating to other investigations, which could be very broad. and the fourth category, the most mysterious of them all, this idea of third parties who could be anyone from obscure figures to donald trump himself. all of those categories give the attorney general an enormous amount of discorrection, and obviously, now we're going to see how he uses it. >> robert, do you think the president could be included in that fourth category? >> we talked about this before. no, i don't. he's not -- i don't think that's

let's get more from our legal analyst, jeffrey toobin and laura coach, jeff, barr is not someone who says something by accident. he's had this job before. had to know using the word spying, echoing president trump would certainly get the president's attention and democrats' attention. what did you make of it? >> well, what i thought was, this is a classic demonstration of the fox newsification of the republican party, that even an establishment figure like bill barr, someone who comes out of the george herbert walker bush administration, talks like sean hannity, this is a completely loaded term, completely false, and by the way, he didn't just say use the word spying. he said he was going to conduct some sort of investigation of whether there was spying that was going to go on. that is a president trump talking point. there's already been an inspector general's investigation, so i don't know what he's going to investigate, but you know, his use of this term shows how much the paranoid lunacy of the right wing is now moved right in to the department of justice. he also talked earlier

he's also a cnn political analyst, gloria borger, jeffrey toobin is here and kirsten powers with us as well. mike shields. jeff, does the attorney general need to have a press conference before the report which he has been in charge of redacting is actually released? >> he certainly doesn't. in fact the tradition at the department of justice is quite the opposite. many of us here are professional journalists and we go to press conferences. the way press conferences work everywhere is they hand you a document, whether it's an indictment or a report, and then the public official speaks about it. here, there's no -- the reporters in the room will have no access to what he's talking about. so it seems to be a transparent attempt to spin the report, to again, like he said on that sunday, to characterize it in a way that is favorable to the president without just showing us the report. >> but the other thing is if you really want people to understand something, what you usually do is you embargo it so you get it ahead of time and say you can't discuss it until the press conference so people actually have time to por
