manu raju, jeff zeleny, both on capitol hill this morning. what do you got, manu?> good morning, carol. actually, paul ryan going to be facing a vote this afternoon from his house republican colleagues. he's probably going to be fine. there's no challengers yet emerging. he has half of his conference actually formally nominate him for speaker. and then in january, that's when the majority of the house has to vote for him. we're looking at house republicans holding at least 238 seats on the the floor. that means he could lose 20 votes and still be re-elected speaker. no one's expecting him to lose that many votes. that doesn't mean there aren't some concerns on the right. yesterday, i had a chance to speak with a top member of that house freedom caucus, that group of detainers that have been a thorn in the side of republicans and he wants some change at the top. here's what he had to say. are you ready to support paul ryan tomorrow when he companies comes up for the vote? >> i haven't heard from him what he wants to change, you know, what's going to be did i rent th

cnn senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is joining us. jeff, the president-elect used twitter to go after your reporting, which was entirely accurate, that he has offered no evidence he actually won the popular vote, as he now claims. now one of his allies is telling him to cool it. what's the latest? >> as you said, donald trump has been very active on twitter in the last 24 hours. he has been retweeting messages from his supporters about how he is the victim of widespread voter fraud. when he saw our report last night, he started sending out messages critical of cnn and me, and again, we asked him for evidence that millions, he said, may have voted illegally. neither he snonor his advisers e offered any. this morning he was back at it changing the subject, saying anyone who burns the american flag should be subject to a year in jail or lose their citizenship. many republicans are cringing at this including newt gingrich, a vocal supporter who sounded the alarm about trump's tweets, telling usa today the president of the united states can

so, to our senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny, we go. ff, first and foremost, this is false. let's just go ahead and say the trump claim is false. why is he doing this? he won. >> reporter: great question. and, brooke, i can tell you just the republicans i have talked to today who are preparing for a trump administration have no idea why he's doing this. i think in one respect, perhaps, he's trying to hang yet another shiny object out there so a lot of us are talking about this and not talking about other things in the news, conflicts of interest, et cetera. he certainly has no evidence to back up his claim of millions of people votely illegally, for one. if he did, some other people ask, then why wouldn't you want there to be a recount? there is actually going to be a recount now. most likely in the state of wisconsin because green party candidate jill stein has requested it. she's going to pay for it. so, the wisconsin board of elections met this morning. the election commissioners. and they denied her request for a hand recount of ever

jeff zeleny in new york city for us. president obama declined to comment on donald trump's most controversial appointment, naming steve bannon as chief white house strategist. jim acosta is work thing part of the story for us. a lot of outrage for us over bannon's appointment. what's the latest? >> reporter: that's right, wolf. first of all, we should point out what we're hearing from a transition source that donald trump has requested top secret security clearances for his adult children and son-in-law, jared cushner, who is an important adviser. as for steve bannon, trump advisers are rushing to his defense, but the bannon backlash is growing. in selecting steve bannon as his chief strategist, donald trump has invited into the oval office one of the leaders of the so-called alt-right. he says he will act as equal partners with reince priebus, who will serve as white house chief of staff. while trump advisers are praising the bannon pick -- >> he's been the general of this campaign. >> reporter: bannon is already coming

jeff zeleny, thanks. cnn senior political correspondent brianna keilar is live with the clinton campaign in allendale where clinton is about to take the stage. brianna, tell us what you've been noticing as you have been talking to campaign officials. >> reporter: well, we are now on her second of four events, and i think talking to them, jake, one of the things we've noticed is just how spent they are, one. but, two, that they are quietly optimistic -- kind of cautiously optimistic about the prospects tomorrow, and it's really largely in part because they put in a lot of the ground game, the work, that they now are relying on what has really been a behemoth of a get out the vote operation a finely tuned machine that the clinton campaign has put together. but certainly this is something where, you know, as jeff was speaking to, hillary clinton has been trying to pivot to a more positive message certainly, and she has a couple positive ads out now here in the close, but it's just been such a nasty, brutal c

>> jeff zeleny, north carolina, the state that president obama won in 2008 and then lost to mitt romney in 2012. let's go to sarah murray at trump campaign headquarters a few blocks away from the clinton campaign headquarters. sarah? >> reporter: jake, it's a much tougher map for donald trump. sources are telling me one key internal metric is showing donald trump falling short of the 270 electoral votes he's going to need. in spite of this, plenty of people in trump tower are still feeling very oppositimistic goi into tonight. they're looking at a number of states internally and public ly where the polls are very close. and they believe those could break late in their favor and ultimately donald trump could come to victory. this key internal metric at this point does not spell a win. as for donald trump himself, he has boldly been predicting victory on the campaign trail essentially since he got into this race, insisting they're winning all over the country. privately, he's a little bit more of a worrier. he has been pressing his aides all day long for updates on what they can point to.
