. >> cnn's jeff zeleny joins us now from iowa where donald trump is set to hold a rally later on today. jeff, what more are you learning about why pence is dropping out and where he might throw his support next. >> reporter: fredicka, it's clear. the former vice president simply said it's not his time. that has been increasingly clear over the last several weeks and months as he's tried to make the argument to republicans here in iowa which opens the presidential race early next year and other states across the country, there simply has not been the appetite for the type of truth telling he was saying to republican crowds. he did sort of bow to reality of he was not likely to make the stage of the third debate which is going to be held in early november in miami. he's not likely to make the donor requirements or polling requirements he needed. what impact it will have on the race is very much an open question. up until now he's not registered much support, at least in the polls. from the standpoint of being a non-trump alternative, that certainly does lend at least some hope to the nik

joining us live from sue sioux city, iowa, is jeff zeleny. >> good morning. it's a race for second place that's define ing this republic presidential candidacy. and the increase for nikki haley since the last poll was taken is really quite extraordinary. now she is in second place here in iowa with florida governor ron desantis. you can see that their competition has been rising. we saw that on the last debate stage, but it is that strong commanding lead from the former president that really defines this race. so, yes, the race has changed over the weekend with mike pence dropping out. that's barely made a blip into the estate of the race here. it's a three-person race at this point. one interest ing point about haf of caucus goers say they have not made up their minds. they may be hoping to changing their minds. that fwifs hope to some of the lower candidates, but for dd dd, his supporters are locked in. he made that clear yesterday right here in sioux city. >> i'd like to apologize. people say you cannot assume you're going to win in iowa. we are up by 47 p

here with me in the studio to share their reporting is jeff zeleny and bloomberg's salia. thank you, all. we have covered a lot in washington and in politics. and this could be a first. >> as manu raju was laying out, it's a central question if kevin mccarthy is going to put himself up for speaker again. because that gets at this question. there's no one wait ing in the wings to be speaker. there's no center of gravity around one individual person. and that is what is unusual about this. if matt gaetz is trying to blow this up, but there's no sense of what is next. that's why this is so consequential. the last time this happened, at least they tried to, was in 1910. the cannon building on capitol hill is named after joseph cannon, a republican from illinois. he was the speaker then. he survived that procedural attempt by george morris. history aside, what is going to happen this afternoon is going to be modern history. we don't know. donald trump has been very silent. he's in a new york courtroom not paying attention to this at all. will he offer kevin mccarthy a lifeline,

sources tell jeff zeleny this was a key reason to why he made this announcement, why he decided to withdraw from the primary, because he hadn't qualified. there weren't donors, despite the fact that pence had been holding back-to-back fundraisers. i'm told that pence simply saw the writing on the wall, that it just became incredibly clear this was not going to happen this cycle. now, the one thing i must point out here is just how far we have come, look at where we were in 2016 versus where we are now. pence was brought on to trump's campaign as vice president essentially to secure the votes of the republican establishment, of the evangelical voters. flash forward to this election two cycles later and there is no room for mike pence in the republican party. he has essentially been cast to the side. now, of course, it will be a big question to see if he comes out and supports one of these other 2024 gop contenders, unclear at this point. but this is really a remarkable moment, having him suspend his career here. and i will note to you, i saw some of his top advisers in the room here, i was w

. >> and now, jeff zeleny, talk about the aspect or it, because we saw donald trump make a political statement going into the courtroom, and the trump kaim and this may be an advantage in a primary and if this is as advantageous in their mind. >> it is not as advantageous in a formal trial, but the reason it is an advantage in the eyes of the trump campaign right now is because we are talking about donald trump. once again, the former president is consuming all of the airwaves and not just this network, but several others, and it is squeezing out to oxygen for any of the rivals to make their case on policy, and electability. to talk about the bidenomics, and what we are seeing as a strategy. he was in iowa campaigning yesterday, and going back to iowa over the weekend. as a travel strategy, campaigning on the weekends, and at the courtroom and local, but this the short term it may work, but there are questions among republican officials and activist leaders and those voters paying attention to the race in iowa, new hampshire and south carolina and the states that open up the voting n

jeff zeleny and daniel strous, thank you to all of you for being here. let's start with just kind of set the table what what dean phillips thinks he sees as an opening. actually, standby. i'm hearing we need to get to nic robertson right away in israel. what are you seeing? >> reporter: we're seeing at the moment a few minutes of calm, but it has been anything but over the last couple hours here. there have been huge rounds of outgoing tank fire from where we are. round after round of artillery fire as well. multiple impacts reported in gaza and gaza city and refugee camp in the other towns in the north of gaza behind us here. at one point about an hour ago, we saw a huge wall of smoke literally blow in off of gaza through this town here. it really cut down visibility. impact to say what the smoke was, but it's the sort of smoke that the military used when they are trying to cover their maneuver and action on the ground. we're hearing still some heavy detonations coming out of gaza. we heard heavy jets flying overhead. i can hear wasn't one flying right

let's expand the conversation now with cnn's dana bash, jamie gangel and jeff zeleny. dana, what does it say to you that there is not going to be a vote today? >> he doesn't have the votes. i mean, he doesn't have them. when you get the votes, you go and you take them. we were asking, and manu was asking our entire hill team, we're trying to figure out whether or not even in the face of not actually having 217 locked up he would try to push the vote and make it happen on the floor. and very clearly the way that the leadership inside the republican conference right now is seeing this is as a situation where they don't want to have the spectacle. manu just said this. they don't want to have the spectacle that we had in january where mccarthy just did it on the house floor and we had 15 rounds. partic particularly not just because it would be an illustration of dysfunction within the house republican conference. most importantly, you have what you just saw from antony blinken standing at joint base andrews, talking about standing with israel, getting on a plane to go to i
