where was jeff zeleny right now? jeff zeleny was in wisconsin, right when you talk to him a moment ago, donald trump won by 22,000 votes, as he said, in 2016, gary johnson, libertarian most natural libertarians and more republican leaning, but he got 106,000 boats. jill stein got 31,000 votes is the green party candidate there. hillary clinton remembers that trust to me, come over to michigan in 2016. jill stein and gets 51,000 votes, right? if you look at the margin in the state, it's 10,000 votes right there. third party candidates matters. so the question erin, is, where do they get on the ballot, right? so if you look at the green party, the green party has ballot access because it's been around a long time in 20 states and it could get higher, including michigan, wisconsin, it's in an arizona, the kennedy campaign says it's going to get on the ballot in those battlegrounds as well. that's what we need to watch. it says it has the signatures. we have to wait for the certification. but the third party candidates,

and as you know, jeff zeleny, the word suspend this specific. it's a legal word. it's not end my campaign. suspend my campaign in order to be able to continue to control all those campaign dollars that she raised. for sure. suspend is a word that i think in this particular cycle with all the wildcards, the age of the candidates, the legal cases, and just the fact that she won delegates. she's earned the right to suspend, not end her campaign. so i think that is important. but talking about trump at the end there, this is now the time for his choosing, putting the burden burden on former president donald trump to win over her supporters. and as we've talked to so many of them over the last several months who have really grown to admire and love her? yes, there are some democrats who have popped into her crowds to try and be mischief-making, if you will, or to send a message to donald trump. but many republicans as well, there are many republicans that i'm thinking back to a conversation ahead with one in charlotte over the weekend. and she told me, i hope donald tr

jeff zeleny, you covered one of the formers in there for a long time. barack obama. and of course, you're covering the biden campaign. what's your takeaway sort of big picture from what we saw last night. >> the big picture takeaway, once again, trying to send a message that democrats are unified which is no small thing. i mean, there are certainly deep concerns over gaza, over immigration and other things. but the democratic party pretty broad-based, is unified around joe biden yesterday, were a few protesters in there, but imagine if he would have had a primary challenge, how he would have gotten into this. so i think the strength of the president there's one thing that campaign is trying to send a message again to get democrats on board. it's kind of a two-part strategy before they get some independent and swing voters, they need to get all democrats on board with the bounds obvious. but that would lift his approval ratings. so and also just to show that president biden's okay. he's doing just fine and side-to-side with all these of rock stars of the party. that's

and i want to go to jeff zeleny now because he's joining us from michigan, which obviously is a crucial battleground state in this year's presidential election. and in the context, jeff, of what manu just mentioned, right, israel and gaza and how the president handled those two issues in his address tonight. how are voters where you are reacting to that and the rest of the speech? >> well, aaron is the president takes his state of the union message on the road, of course, one stop. >> not surprisingly, will be here in battleground michigan. you're right. >> the economy and foreign policy front and center on the minds of voters. but i can tell you, i was at a watch party tonight with biden's supporters and there were feelings of anxiety and apprehension among his own supporters going into the speech. that quickly changed as the speech wore on, we caught up with one small business owner here, rihanna knowles, who said she was impressed and surprised by the president. >> overall, it was a different side of him that came out. he was, like i said, very confident, very reassuring of the thing

it's good to see you guys were just handed some new reporting from jeff zeleny. let's let's go through this together. >> nikki haley, reach decision to suspend her presidential campaign late tuesday an adviser said an adviser said that going into the big day of voting, the haley team had set a loose threshold of winning about 40% of the vote in several states to credibly stay in the race. and the decision to get out of the grace, is that a benchmark for staying and that one benchmark wasn't set. what do you think of them? >> it makes sense. i mean, yeah, 40% i think, i think there was very few kind of pass for nikki to stay in after super tuesday, not necessarily because she didn't want to, but because the donor money is going to dry up. i mean, obviously nobody, wants to chase. >> sure. hadn't to this point that no, it hadn't. and i think she actually thinks she overperformed yesterday compared to what a lot of people thought, particularly winning vermont, not bad, right there. but yeah, i mean, for her, i think to go on passes didn't make much sense. 40% made s

but anyway let's discuss this in more with our political experts and jeff zeleny. you've been out there covering this campaign closely, this mach-e tone of trump seems to be at least to be a different tone than we sign in 2020. >> we absolutely. and there's no doubt that it is different from 2020, but it's really been picking up from the president himself personally sort of taking some delight in going after donald trump. it seems, but if you think back to when donald trump first came on the scene in 2016, the clinton campaign mocked him in a different way and kind of just it's missed him in 2020 biden tried to sort of ignore him now, they are locked in to a fully trying to get in his head. i think by making fun of his weight, his image, how he golfs. but also more than that really day by day by day. there's a crescendo of how the campaign is going after him i'm not sure it matters if the end of the day to voters, but i think it's clear the biden campaign is trying to go directly after trump's psyche and things as well here. to the extent that he's watching and we

live from the white house with some new reporting that mj you've done along with our colleague, jeff zeleny and what are you hearing? will do and i'm just going back to that visit that you mentioned by president obama to the white house last week. i'm told that the mood was a cheerful, it was sort of a reunion of sorts for the two presidents effective staff to know, given that they have a known each other, many of them going back to the obama white house, of course. >> but it >> was definitely a working visit. this was the biden campaign i'm putting the former president to work the to spend a lot of time together several hours. i'm told taping a lot of materials for the biden campaign that is going to get rolled out in the coming weeks including, of course related to the affordable care act and with the general election now fully underway, we do expect to see the former president increasingly more involved with the biden campaign and certainly hitting the trail more especially when we get into the fall and tomorrow we are about to see this big fundraiser in new york city at radio city music

she's she's been very clear about that here's a couple of her supporters in north carolina when jeff zeleny asked them about her future and the potential of running for president. and another with another label, right? >> i've been intrigued for a while now at the whole notion of a couple of legitimate third party thought about that a lot, pardon me really would like to see that so do you think she made a mistake to rule out an independent run >> well, that's her choice and i think she's decided that hurts you choose in the republican party. but listen to those. haley supporters and a lot of others, you know, the polling is showing the american people 65, 70%. want another choice other than trump and biden we've been talking to some really exceptional candidates, who can offer that choice. so well, let's see what the delegates sound friday. >> but i think this is a unique moment in history where the american people are so fed up with the two parties and the two logic of probable candidates that they're going to welcome a bipartisan unity. third choice on the ballot. and we're only going to

cnn's jeff zeleny is in columbus, ohio for us and our political director, david chaldean is in washington with new exit polling. so david first all the exit polling, which it's saying, >> yeah, anderson, i mean, these exit polls give us insight into sort of have this republican primary electorate in ohio sort of sorts itself. one of the key questions we've been tracking all primary season is asking republican primary voters, do you believe that joe biden legitimately won the 2020 election? we know the answer to that is yes, but if you look here among republican primary voters in that key set of primary anderson, only a third, say yes, 32% here say yes, 63% wrongly say no he did not legitimately, win that larger group. take a look at how they split in this republican senate primary. they overwhelmingly, if you look here, go for bernie moreno, the trump back candidate, over matt dolan of moreno wins 58% of the so-called election denier's the bigger group of voters here to matt dolan is 24%. frank larose and 18% with these voters, if you look at the reverse, those that do believe correctly t

jeff zeleny, this will be the first criminal trial of a former president or a presidential candidate for that matter. how could that impact this upcoming campaign? >> i mean, in many ways, since it is historic, there is no history to draw upon about how this will potentially impact the race. look, i mean, one thing we do know over the last year or so anytime donald trump has a criminal case against him or legal case, his base has rallied behind him, but we're in a different stage and phase of this election, we're in the general election phase. so the base we know will stay with them and perhaps become even more supportive if that's possible. we do not know in a broader term how this will affect him personally. i think that is the thing that i'm watching the moos as jamie was saying, they're are all these kids cases. this is the one that is the most personal to him. >> we do >> not know how it will affect his family, his marriage, or him directly sitting in court. so the venting and the stewing that we've heard him talk about this case over the years is going to grow, obviously, but w
