jefferson studies here at monticello. it's my pleasure to welcome andrew burstein and nancy isenberg for the launch of their joint book, "madison and jefferson," published by random house. they are both of history at louisiana state university. andrew has written widely on the 19th century, done two books on jefferson, "jefferson's secrets" which is published in 2005, and nancy most recent data biography of aaron burr. she earlier published on the origins the women's rights movement in america, in a book called "sex and citizenship in antebellum america." andrew and nancy are old time friends of the thomas jefferson foundation. they are both a former fellows and residents. they are known to many members of this audience and i'm delighted to welcome them back. so please join me in welcoming andrew and nancy. randolph jefferson was no thomas jefferson. which is not to say he wasn't necessarily the father of these children but we cannot establish that he was there when these babies were conceived. the only jefferson mail who was definitely and certainly on site when they were conceived was thomas jefferson. shi'ite never conceived when he wasn't there and he was gone a lot. she stopped conceiving at the age of 38 when jefferson is 63 and she stops conceiving children at that point. at 38, patch the randolph who was a year older than sammy having this -- sally having said four more days after this. babies after this. you have to look at this. a little complicated. they like to have people marry their cousin and that sort of thing. one genealogist referred to as this looks like a tangle of fish hooks. that is a wonderful metaphor for it. historical evidence, evidence of likelihood, she never conceived except one he was round and stopped conceiving when he would have stopped being a part of it and also when patchy moved into the house.

there was a shooting that occurred here in the 200 block of jefferson. unfortunately, two people are deceased. we don't have much information. it is a male and a female that worked at the store in the 200 block of jefferson. there is one person that is in custody. >> investigators still on the scene. we do believe that the bodies are still inside with homicide continuing its investigation. this is likely to go on for some period of time tonight. we do not think it was a robbery although we can't confirm that at this point. we have heard from customers of a shop next door that the people involved in the shooting may be competing business people. people who had some dispute or one or another. that we can't confirm but we have heard that a couple times on the street. we heard also there were four shots fired and then we heard two shots were fired. a lot of stuff still being sorted out. don't know all the details except unfortunately two people shot dead and police are investigating. >> looked like they both worked at the store. is that what i heard him say.
