jefferson studies here at monticello. it's my pleasure to welcome andrew burstein and nancy isenberg for the launch of their joint book, "madison and jefferson," published by random house. they are both of history at louisiana state university. andrew has written widely on the 19th century, done two books on jefferson, "jefferson's secrets" which is published in 2005, and nancy most recent data biography of aaron burr. she earlier published on the origins the women's rights movement in america, in a book called "sex and citizenship in antebellum america." andrew and nancy are old time friends of the thomas jefferson foundation. they are both a former fellows and residents. they are known to many members of this audience and i'm delighted to welcome them back. so please join me in welcoming andrew and nancy. [applause] >> within days of taking office of the fourth president of the united states, james madison received a letter from rebecca, a well educated philadelphia and, one of the gentle folk of that city. she petition

randolph jefferson was no thomas jefferson. which is not to say he wasn't necessarily the father of these children but we cannot establish that he was there when these babies were conceived. the only jefferson mail who was definitely and certainly on site when they were conceived was thomas jefferson. shi'ite never conceived when he wasn't there and he was gone a lot. she stopped conceiving at the age of 38 when jefferson is 63 and she stops conceiving children at that point. at 38, patch the randolph who was a year older than sammy having this -- sally having said four more days after this. babies after this. you have to look at this. a little complicated. they like to have people marry their cousin and that sort of thing. one genealogist referred to as this looks like a tangle of fish hooks. that is a wonderful metaphor for it. historical evidence, evidence of likelihood, she never conceived except one he was round and stopped conceiving when he would have stopped being a part of it and also when patchy moved into the house.

jefferson, some of your former friends are losing their head in the guillotine jefferson's response was quite extraordinary. he says well, so be it. if only an adam and eve were left alive and left free, that would be okay. this led the irish journalists to say that thomas jefferson was the pall of the 18th-century. now jefferson never really would have implemented that, but he -- his support of the revolution is deep and split the society and made the federalists feel as if the had a fifth column in their midst and that france might have invaded the united states and was invading every other state in europe and creating a french puppet. that is what created the crisis of seven to 98. estimate is their anything in the revolutionary and constitutional era that could eliminate such political phenomena at the tiberi movement, the mistrust of government? >> one thing you should realize is popular politics is not new. let me give one exit from 1808. simon snyder the governor of pennsylvania, and snyder was the son of a poor mechanic, saw the jacket and had no formal licht vacation but a very

and you coined the phrase, "jefferson starship" initially. a logical extension. i was the science fiction one in the band, so when i started a new band and i wanted to carry on what we had been doing, it seemed just logical. and the first album that i did was a science fiction album about stealing the first government starship that was up there. hijack was a really bad word to say, you know, in airports in those days. so "let's hijack the starship." and so it was just-- just a logical... if you look at-- if you look at your work from that point on, there's, you know, this band that you describe as not being concerned about commercial appeal early on suddenly-- well, we had no objection about commercial appeal. we just weren't very commercial. but eventually you were. oh, i think you can count the number of hits we've had in or career on one hand, really. (paulsen) when you recorded with a new lineup-- a "new old" lineup-- you had a band called the kbc band. yeah. and this was a band that had one album and had a clear point of view, and had a particular marketable

actually changing jefferson street is a couple of years away. our hope would be as soon as possible. one exciting change that is already happening, and we are starting construction next year, is pier 43, in the heart of fisherman's wharf. it is a new program that will take out the parking lot heading out into the bay, and replace that with a promise not. it is something that has already been for approval. that will be the first step that will really help the connection between pier 39 and the heart of fisherman's wharf. that will help. you will feel you want to ride your bike when you come down that part of it. that will be within the next year and a half. our program is two or three years off. we hope to make it as fast as possible. >> were you finished with your presentation? how are you all preparing ourselves for the cup? i will say "when" it comes. how are you preparing yourselves for that? it is going to be huge and make a big difference for awhile. >> absolutely. we are excited about it. our experience from fourth of july through fleet we

jefferson isn't alone. henry clay says some things and almost the entire congressional leadership thinks this is going to be a cakewalk and they fought their troubles would come at sea when the royal navy is so powerful and so the irony is the republican political leadership didn't like the navy and didn't want to invest money in it. they solve the army has more cost-effective and the expected to win the war, land. one after another they bring disaster. meanwhile this navy is winning victories that strategically don't amount to anything. but, in terms of moral the british don't expect to ever lose one on one ship battles they just don't do that with the french even though the french have more powerful chips but they are losing them all the time to the americans and it is impossible to understate just how shocking this is to the british. and the americans are thrilled by this and so you get people like calhoun and henry clay that never voted the dollar for the navy before i don't think and now saying our gre

there was a shooting that occurred here in the 200 block of jefferson. unfortunately, two people are deceased. we don't have much information. it is a male and a female that worked at the store in the 200 block of jefferson. there is one person that is in custody. >> investigators still on the scene. we do believe that the bodies are still inside with homicide continuing its investigation. this is likely to go on for some period of time tonight. we do not think it was a robbery although we can't confirm that at this point. we have heard from customers of a shop next door that the people involved in the shooting may be competing business people. people who had some dispute or one or another. that we can't confirm but we have heard that a couple times on the street. we heard also there were four shots fired and then we heard two shots were fired. a lot of stuff still being sorted out. don't know all the details except unfortunately two people shot dead and police are investigating. >> looked like they both worked at the store. is that what i heard him say.
