in some ways both jefferson and adams. jefferson more than adams really gives you a lot of material. washington is determined not to. there is a story probably apocraphal though you see it in a lot of books. during a constitutional convention when washington was presiding as chair, during a break alexander hamilton challenged morris, a wonderfully iconic figure with a pegleg. you know the statue you see of washington in picture books that's now at the virginia historical society, the body and torso of washington is actually morris. because he posed for the artist in paris after the artist had taken the life mask of washington in mount vernon. hamilton says to morris, i want you to go up to washington, put your hand on his shoulder and say, how you doing, george? and morris takes him up on this and washington lifts his hand off of his shoulder, stares at him until he walks away. there is an loket row magnetic -- an electro magnetic field around washington. you do not enter that interior space. very few people are permitted

there's a letter that benjamin banneker wrote to thomas jefferson in 1791. and he's basically -- thomas jefferson at the time was the secretary of state, and benjamin banneker was this accomplished astronomer who would help plan that print for the nation's capital. he was this accomplished man. he published annual almanacs that, with a striking precision, rejected crops. so he was this accomplished man your he was making clocks. i can go on and on about his accomplishments, and he was thomas jefferson insisted that african-americans were intellectually inferior and would never be equal to whites. so benjamin banneker writes this letter that should be a part of our education, because he's basically appealing to him as an american, as, you know, as a scholar, as a christian. and he sang, you know, yeah, my skin is as black as night, but unequal. like, how could you see otherwise? we are equal. sure, we are integrated in circumstances now, so you don't see us in full flower, but the potential is there. look at me. and he sent in his almanac. so the need for me

sharon chen with this week's jefferson award winner. >> reporter: ken martin and matt adams give 15 to0 bicycles donated today, piled high in their san rafael warehouse. >> i had no idea they would go to africa every year. >> reporter: ken and matt own a bay area chain, but since 2007, their passion for bikes has steered them overseas at least once a year. they have traveled, bringing used bikes to people who need an affordable way to get around. ken says it's a rewarding ride. >> when you see kids on bikes, you know, kind of for the first time, you can see they kind of thought they maybe would never have a bike and all of a sudden they are riding off through the sand. >> here you go. >> reporter: ken and matt started the mike's bikes foundation in 2007. they hope to put the brakes on a common problem with donating free bicycles to developing countries. >> when the bikes are given for free and there's no support there to keep the bikes running, first time they get a flat tire literally it gets thrown on the side of the road and the project basically goes back to ground zero. >> reporte
