this is jefferson city, right there. jefferson city here with the rotation, here with the storm itself. the debris on the ground. i showed you this yesterday with the storm from tulsa. that's what debris looks like on the southeast side of jefferson city, the blue. we look for blue in the correlation coefficient because blue means it is not just a rain drop, a hail drop. it is something out of shape. it is a leaf, a tree, a branch, a shingle. this was a large storm at the time. you see the debris in the cloud itself. this is still going on at this hour. this will continue for hours to come. it will redevelop in western oklahoma later on tonight. this is where the radar is now through st. louis, indianapolis. it's warming up again and still very, very humid. that muggy air, rising air causes more tornadoes again today. there is a chance of severe weather not far from the big cities. right through the keystone state, through d.c., possibly late tonight but more tornados in the plains. we knew there was a trough in the west

brett, so you live in the town of eldin close to jefferson city. you heard those sirens, we heard them there on the video you shot. tell us what the first sign of trouble was and did you have enough time to get to safety? >> good morning. well, we were aware that the storms were coming through, i had been tuned into what was going on in joplin and carl's junction and so we were tracking that specific cell. our home doesn't have a basement, we don't have a storm shelter so we go a couple blocks over to our church, they have a nice basement and we usually go there if there's any problems. we went right before that cell arrived and that actually wasn't the one that was -- ended up causing the tornado. there was one that was beside it that ended up spawning a tornado. we were staying outside kind of just gauging because inside the basement it's hard to know what's going on and the sirens were going off. we listened to the -- listened to the wind and it got to a point where i knew it was -- it just gets different and we -- we kind of all huddled down in

and you can see, this is what it started to impact right as it made its way through jefferson city. trailers blown over on their side, but to see the real path this tornado left behind, just look this direction. destruction as far as the eye can see. this was one of the first businesses hit as this tornado made its way. this is a storage facility and i can tell you about 50% of the units here have been damaged. people are coming up today, seeing if any of their possessions are left behind. and a lot of folks are carrying what little they can salvage from this mess that this tornado left. we know that from a while, the hospital was running off of battery power, because so many power lines were knocked down. and for a lot of these folks, they were fortunately able to take shelter wherever this tornado made its way through. i had a chance to speak to the governor today, and he credited that through the early warning systems that they have in place here, that when that siren went off, people knew exactly where they needed to go. take a listen. >> so we're watching all these warnings tak

. >> we are joined from jefferson city, missouri. morgan, this is a dire situation for our friends in the midwest. give us a sense of the storm and what's in store today? >> reporter: we saw the first images of that wedge funnel cloud that happened just before midnight in jefferson city, we knew it would be bad, but daylight showing the truex tent of the damage. this warped piece of metal wrapped around this pole coming from koesz the street. the roof of a gas station ripped off. the governor says early warnings saved lives as the tornado made its way through town. we have a massive storm that is showcasing the power and one small example of that is right here inside this mini van. of course, the windows all blown out. getting not even a direct hit. just a glancing blow by the storm. look at this. a piece of wood jammed right into this very car. now, as of right now we've checked in with health officials. they say 20 people have been injured by the storm. a lot of these people were still asleep in their beds when the storm hit just b

you see this kind of devastation all over jefferson city but the south side of the city is the worsthat we have seen so far. again, this is a devastating tornado. it will take a long time to recover. shannon o'brien, back to you. >> julie: shannon, thank you very much. the areas under threat of severe weather. i'm joined by chief meteorologist rick, what is going on? >> sometimes whether get stuck in a pattern appear in and i think one day, the next day there might be -- we are in a pattern and it will take us a while to recover. severe weather coming and also means more rain coming. in taking a look at the maps, you can see where the severe weather is. the last 48 hours the last two days and seven days. 190 reported tornadoes. so a stretch but you look at the southeast, there is nothing there. that is what is driving this. incredibly hot, high-pressure bringing temperatures that are breaking records into the mid upper 90s. a lot of cases, it feels like the dead center of summer and unfortunately, that doesn't change. that doesn't change, the storm track continues the same direction

a "violent tornado" ripped through parts of jefferson city yesterday. officials are saying there are no reports of missing people in the city, but first responders will be making door-to-door checks just in case. we're learning three people have died near golden city in the southwestern part of the state. several others injured after severe storms hit other parts of missouri. this storm system is vicious. matt finn on the story in jefferson city. matt? >> harris, we're off of highway 54, not far from the capitol building. one of the hardest hit. you'd can see that unfortunately a lot of people have lost their homes. apartments, obliterated, cars mangled, trees launched into the area and power lines down. police say a violent tornado touched down here around 11:40 p.m. neighbors said they heard the sirens, had a fewin to take shelter. calls were received for those that were trapped. 20 people transferred to local hospitals. crews going door-to-door. firemen with axes. they say they're going to continue to do that all day long. not long area, here's missou

matt finn is live in jefferson city with more. matt?ppening right now, the army corps of engineers say they closed a 40 mile stretch near hardin, illinois and in st. louis, they closed five miles of the mississippi river to all vessels. the flood waters, too high, too dangerous. that does make a dent in recreation and commerce on the rivers. the army course says they're concerned about the rain over the weekend. happening behind me in this capitol city of jefferson city, you can see where a tornado ripped right through this area just blocks from the capitol building. roofs plucked from the homes and people are working to restore services to this area. we talked to a woman that said she got down, hid by her bathtub and pleaded with god to live. >> all of a sudden i had a ceiling and then all of a sudden i could see this. it was at night. so essentially i saw a tornado, which is not -- it's creepy. >> thoughts running through your mind. >> sweet god, i'm going to die. don't let me die. >> obviously that woman lived. you know, throughout t
