diving into the jefferson city tornado there. i just want to show you the vertical profile of the thunderstorms getting up to as high as 40,000 feet into the atmosphere. christine talked about debris being measured by radar there as high as 13,000 meters. 13,000 feet, i should say, high into the faatmosphere as well. a serious storm system across the region just before midnight. of course you take a look at this, almost 170 reports of tornadoes in the past five days. this is the highest concentration of tornadoes that i could locate across the country in a two-year span. so it really kind of goes to speak to how intense it's been across the region in less than a week period. thunderstorms still in the forecast by this afternoon. still could see another round of severe weather across portions of the plains, and now introducing portions of the northeast into the picture for severe weather as well, and we'll break that down in further detail in the next 30 minutes. >> pedram javaheri, thank you so much for that. >>> president trump

nbc's morgan chesky remains on duty for us there in jefferson city, missouri.morgan what are you seeing now? what are people telling you? >> reporter: craig, we knew the damage would be bad when we heard about the size of the tornado. when our crew drove in before dawn, our first glimpse how bad this tornado was when it made its way through just after midnight and this was, believe it or not, a storage facility, and a quick look is all it takes to see the power that this storm had when it made its way through early this morning. so many people safe at home overnight when it struck, showing up to see if their possessions are safe today. it's an 50/50 whether they're still here or gone. the sad story, a lot of these older cars are actually belonging to the owner of this facility, who brought them from the nearby airport here because the airport, another garage, was supposed to get hit by severe weather. as you can imagine, a lot of frustration today. people showing up trying to lend a hand because jefferson city hit so hard by this tornado. a chance to hear from

so colonel jefferson let's yield the floor to you, sir. tell us a bit of history of yourself and armed forces. >> someone asked why the hell did you go to the army? i remember 1941 world war ii was kicking out. i graduated from clark college in june '42. the draft was -- so the first thing i did was went down to the federal building and joined. i thought they were going to send me to tuskegee, put me on a list. took me almost nine months before they called me. remember now i'm a graduate, i'm a clark college graduate, and i'm in the last class going to tuskegee of college blacks or college graduates because the army, navy, marines were grabbing black men with college degrees. the classes after me went through three months of college training detachment. i graduated in january '44. from tuskegee as a second lieutenant, we were sent to -- air force base, flied a p-39 because the three sections of the three squadrons were the 301, the 302, and the 99th. these three squadrons of blacks were flying p-39s up and down the shores outside of italy.

more now from jefferson city. >> reporter: we are getting a look at the destruction left behind after a violent tornado ripped through missouri's capital overnight. now authorities are assessing the damage in jefferson city and doing door-to-door searches. >> our search-and-rescue, our fire, our police, we are all going to get together and we are going door-to-door to make sure that everyone is accounted for. >> reporter: this is just the latest round of storms to hit the southern plains and midwest in recent days. flooding in oklahoma trapping people and forcing the evacuation of a small town. in missouri several people were killed in barton county as severe weather moved in from oakland. officials say the death toll in jefferson city could have been catastrophic. >> thank goodness there are plenty of people doing what they can to warn the general public to take safety and a lot of people did. we are fortunate we didn't have more injuries an they did or fatalities that we did. >> reporter: in the hardest hit areas of jefferson city you can see the crushed home, obliterated cars and t
