now we can talk to jeffery robinson a former u.n. appeals judge joining us live from london. thanks so talking to us again. you've followed this process right from the start. how much cause for optimism would you say this granting of bail actually is? >> well, this bail should have been granted 401 days ago. that's the bottom line. peter greste has been released, deported and let's hope that mr. fahmy in the next week or so between the next hearing an february 23 follows him. there's no logical difference between the two men the evidence or non-evidence against them is the same. they've both got seven years. mr. fahmy has now shed his egyptian citizenship so he's a full blooded canadian and as mr. greste is full blooded australian so there is absolutely no difference to i hope the decent and logical thing will be done in the next week and mr. fahmy on his why to his home in canada. today's proceedings do, for all the happiness i imagine that the families have that they are out on bail, mr. fahmy has to post $33,000, but that won't be difficult, i'm sure, for all that happines

. >> we'll talk to jeffery robinson former u.n. appeals judge live now from london. thank you for talking to us here at al jazeera. how optimistic do you think we should be now that bail has been granted to our two colleagues in cairo? >> well, everyone is very happy obviously that they're out on bail but they should have been given bail 411 days ago and it's a terrible indictment of the egyptian judiciary. they've been kept in prison, innocent men for that period of time. now, they're being used as, in effect scapegoats, the cat and mouse game is being played by the egyptian government. they've let peter greste go, but of course, mr. fahmy who's position is exactly the same, he's no longer an egyptian citizen, he's a canadian, seven years imprisonment on trumped up charges, he should follow, and so logically and legally, he should be deported next week, and it will be down to the al jazeera one on february 23 now it's before some very poor, lousy judges. in fact at the first level of egyptian authority who are really government officials and know what the government

far that he would support the deportation of the canadian citizen -- >> i'm afraid the line to jeffery robinson seems to have gone away, but i think we got a gist really of what he was saying. al jazeera journalist who is very intimately involved in this whole case and so a ripple of excitement went through the newsroom when we heard the guys were left out on bail. >> this is the first time we've had since this awful process began on 29 december, 2013, the first time the egyptian judicial system is recognizing at last that the convictions were unsteady and hopefully we're going to see the 23 of february, there may well be an acquittal. we were relieved to see the appeal ruling back in january that it didn't have a leg to stand on. i think i'm not really excited i'm relieved that the guys are going to get out and feel the sun on their faces and we hope now seeing the beginning of the end. >> there's been no mention so far of you and our other colleagues because of course you were sentenced in absentia. >> yes indeed, the egyptian legal opinion has always been to us that unless we go to egypt sen

jeffery robinson thank you very much for talking to us. >> thank you. >>> yemen's military have launched strikes against al-qaeda fighters in the southeast of the country. [ gunfire ] >> it follows an attack by al-qaeda fighters. three soldiers and four attackers were killed. the violence comes at a time of major instability. last week houthi rebels officially seized power in a coup. they have a strong hold in the northwest, plus other provinces, and the capitol sana'a. they always hold some parts of ibb province and one other province. al-qaeda is in control of some parts of the province we just told you about. the group is trying to take advantage of the instability to expand its power. >> reporter: it appears almost everywhere in yemen there is some instability. this latest occurring in shebwa where the fighters attacked al-qaeda fighters. also there are reports that some soldiers have been taken captive. the significant here isn't necessarily the army base itself but more importantly the geographic location of it. it is in very close proximity to the oil production center of yemen. w
