investigation that troubled gray while tom sherwood has our report. >> reporter: businessman jeffrey thompson pleaded guilty to being the mastermind behind a $650,000 shadow campaign that helped elect vince gray mayor in 2010. thompson in court in 2014 said gray knew about the shadow campaign and welcomed secret funds to defeat adrian fenty, but despite those thompson revelations, gray was never charged and the probe abruptly ended last december. gray has denied all wrongdoing and is running for a seat on the d.c. council now. sources directly involved in the investigate confirm to news4 that thompson's credibility as a witness was severely damaged last year. that's when the sources say gray's lawyer, robert bennett, warned prosecutors that thompson's private life included questionable sexual relations with a variety of men and possibly some under age. the u.s. attorney's office says it's not in a position to comment on earlier this week declined to comment to news4 on any aspect of the investigation. thompson couldn't be reached.
