joining us now is jeffrey toobin, cnn chief legal analyst and author of the new book out today, "trued misdemeanors: the investigation of donald trump." jeffrey, i can't wait to talk about your book. but first, let's talk about what prosecutors in new york are doing. so, what clues do we have that this is well beyond the payments to karen mcdougal and stormy daniels? >> well, two things. it's a wide-ranging financial investigation relating to tax matters, relating to fraud, and of course, relating to the possibly unlawful campaign contributions with the two women. the other thing we know is that the prosecutors are going to get those documents. the supreme court decision in that case was really quite clear. it may take a month. it may take two months, but they are going to get the financial records and the tax documents. the important point for the public to remember, though, is that this is a grand jury investigation, and those documents will not be released to the public until and unless there's a trial, and that would be probably at least a year away. so, you know, before the elect

talk about it all with jeffrey toobin, author of a fascinating new book "true crimes and misdemeanors donald trump." jeffrey, the book goes into great detail on most if not all of this. what's your biggest takeaway from the senate intelligence report and pointing out again, this is a bipartisan report. >> anderson, i think what the senate intelligence committee found really reinforces and frankly makes worse what mueller found. i think to me the most interesting connection involves paul manafort. the campaign chairman, and he was in close contact with this fellow constantine kalennik was in fact a russian spy. meeting with him, giving information to him while involved, and i think the thing so interesting about manafort's role is that it doesn't just include russia. it includes ukraine. as you go forward and you see the president's obsession with ukraine and desire to use ukraine to help win this election, the 2020 election, it all begins with manafort and manafort's ties to the pro-russian part of the ukrainian political world. ukraine and russia are all one story. they're not two se

let's bring in our chief legal analyst jeffrey toobin. s the author of the best-selling brand-new book entitled "true crimes and misdemeanors: the investigation of donald trump." jeffrey, help break down what this means. does this mean that these tax returns from the president's tax returns could actually be handed over to the manhattan district attorney next week? >> the important thing to remember about these tax returns is the supreme court decided this case last and trump lost 7-2. what's going on now is sort of this last spasm of activity where trump's lawyers are trying to forestall the inevitable. it is possible these tax returns will be turned over on august 28th. it is possible that there may be a few days later because there's now an appeals court hearing on september 1st. but the important point is that trump has lost this case, and these documents, which don't come from trump, they come from his accountants, are going to be turned over to cyrus vance, the manhattan district attorney, sooner rather than later. >> so do you think

joining us now, cnn chief legal analyst, jeffrey toobin. on, a boon for lawyers across america. i think we'll get to the extraordinary notion that so many people connected to the president have been charged with crime in a second, jeffrey. but first, steve bannon in particular, this crime. what is he charged with doing and how likely is a conviction? >> it's a pretty straightforward case. bannon was involved with this charity. and they repeatedly made the case to their donors, we are not taking a dime, a penny, of any of the money you contribute. the charges say, and there are apparently e-mails and texts to back this up, that the four conspirators secret agreed that they would put a substantial amount of that money, hundreds of thousands of dollars, in their own pockets. and apparently, there are financial records to back that up. in federal court, 90 plus percent, even more than that, 95% of people who are indicted either are convicted or plead guilty. so, steve bannon is just in a world of trouble. >> here's another bit of evidence. they

i want to go to jeffrey toobin, the author of the book "true crimes and misdemeanors: the investigationrump." they go on board this yacht today, they arrest steve bannon. this is -- they've got a lot. how solid does the case look to you? >> well, i mean, it looks like a very straightforward case. they made these representations in writing repeatedly that none of the money would go to them, the four people involved in the case. there are texts and messages, apparently, where they are conspiring about how much money they took for themselves. and apparently they took hundreds of thousands of dollars. that's fraud, telling people one thing and doing something else. now, we have to see what their defense is. but the other problem that steve bannon has is that he's the most famous of the four defendants. that is just an invitation to one or more of the others to flip, to plead guilty and cooperate because in federal court defendants are rewarded strongly for cooperating against other defendants. and bannon looks like he's got nowhere to cooperate here. >> and just to obviously make the point

jeffrey toobin has been digging into trump's legal fights and in his new book "true crimes and misdemeanorseff, i want to talk about the book in a moment but just first, the investigation of the trump organization we learned about today. at this point, is this a question of when, not if, prosecutors in new york get their hands on president trump's financial records? >> that's exactly it. i mean, if you read the supreme court's opinion, in this case, they left no doubt. that cyrus vance, the -- new york's county district attorney and his grand jury have the right to get these financial records. and -- and i think they're likely to get a ruling sooner, rather than later. probably, in the next -- in the next month or so. that is a final, final ruling. the important thing to remember, though, is that this is a grand jury investigation in that it is secret. the documents, including the tax returns will be turned over only to the grand jury and not publicly disclosed unless there is a trial which is probably many months down the road if it happens at all. so yes, the prosecutors will get these do
