joining me for more is chief legal analyst jeffrey toobin.ump broke decades of precedent when he refused to give up financials. so conflicts of interest with him are not a surprise. but the trump hotel in washington was a particular mine field. is a that what we're seeing here? what jumps out to you? >> that's part of what we're seeing. it was an open secret that the way foreign governments ingratiated themselves with the trump administration was to stay in the trump hotel. and many governments did it. it is not clear what they got in return, but the whole point of the amollments close, which is an ancient close in the insticonstitution, is federal officials including the president, should not have on flikts of interest, should not be receiving any sort of money from foreign governments. but it obviously happened here to the tune of several million dollars. >> there's been so many questions raised about trump's relationship with deutsche bank. the committee saying that in 2018 they allowed trump to delay payments on a loan of $170 million. ho

joining us now, cnn chief legal analyst, jeffrey toobin. grassley saying garland has politicized the doj accurate? >> well, no, they are not accurate. and as you pointed out, they are rich with irony since he spent four years defending the incredibly politicized justice department of william barr and jeff sessions. but as you point out, this was theater where merrick garland was really a prop more than a witness so that some senators -- some republican senators could campaign for president. some republican senators, like grassley, could run for re-election. but it all had very little to do with merrick garland. >> what does it say that grassley's suggesting the justice department is politicized when the former president whom grassley is clinging to for re-election tried nine times to get his justice department to undermine the election according to this committee's report? >> well, this is sort of the fantasy world in -- in -- in which we live. but, you know, anderson, it's really important to remember why we are talking about school boards

joining me now, cnn's brian stelter and chief legal analyst jeffrey toobin. brian, how damning is the information that's been brought forward? >> there have been other whistleblowers, former employees speaking out against facebook, but never as starkly as this. never as bluntly as this. i've never seen a staffer come forward with so many documents, so much backup for her allegations, and not only does she have these documents, she's filed complaints with the sec trying to get the financial regulators involved because she claims that what the company says in public is contradicted by what it's learning in private. i think this is a story that is about the entire world and how the world is being affected by social media. we're talking about countries like spain and myanmar where there are conflicts that are accelerated and intensified by the use of facebook. and here is frances haughan saying i saw it firsthand how it was making bad situations worse, creating a vicious cycle of more polarization and hate around the world. we see it far away, and we saw it on ja

"the new york times" about criminal charges, i want to turn next to cnn's chief legal analyst jeffrey toobin. so, jeff, obviously there is a lot that we do not know at this point. just what could be the scale and the scope of legal liability in -- in this? >> well, let's start with the -- the easy part which is civil liability. this whole misadventure was the definition of negligence, as far as i can tell. and ms. hutchins' family is certain to file lawsuits against everyone responsible for this production. it's unclear who will have to pay that money. that depends on the structure of the insurance and further factual development. but certainly, there will be a multimillion-dollar award of damages to -- to her family. um, once you start to get into the criminal area, that's where i think it's very important to let the facts -- let -- let's see where the facts go because at this point i think it's very hard to speculate about who might be liable. >> in terms -- "the new york times" is quoting the santa fe district attorney tonight as saying everything at this point, including criminal charges
