jeh johnson is married. he has two kids. he is active in party politics, serving as a fund-raiser and adviser to both the john kerry and barack obama campaigns for president. so before we see the ceremony happening in the rose garden, let's have a quick chat with barbara starr live from the pen pentagon and briera keeler. barbara, first to you, what is jeh johnson's reputation at the pentagon. >> he oversaw a team of 10,000 pentagon attorneys around the world. very much a legal mind here. when he served, writing some of those justifications for drone attacks. speaking out publicly after he left about the justification for the killings, the targeted killings by u.s. drones overseas. killing, justifying killing of american citizens overseas by drones when they got involved in terrorist activities. very much also speaking out about the need to change the thinking about the war on terror. that it was becoming not so much a military operation but one for the intelligent and law enforcement communities to pursue. so his thinking a

know everything or at least most things about everything dhs does. >> tell us what you think about jeh johnsonctive? >> fascinating choice. johnson has a very rounded background inside a lot of the very important national security law issues that he faced at the pentagon. for someone to run an agency like this, even with the management questions, he knows a lot as we were just discussing about the inner agency process that's going to be really important. and this will be a test of how perhaps a different background for an agency whose existence is very much in play might turn out to be an agent of change. >> what do you think? >> absolutely. i think his background at d.o.d. and his experience dealing with cybersecurity issues is going to be absolutely critical. dhs and d.o.d. are in a lot of disagreements over how cybersecurity, one of the biggest threats to our national security, should be handled. he's been right in the middle of that. i think he could be very effective in helping kind of bridge the gap. the other thing that i think, when you look at his speeches, he's a very thoughtful guy

you're right, president obama did nominate jeh johnson to be the next homeland security secretary. the two have a long relationship. johnson was an early supporter of president obama's going back to the 2008 campaign. he was a legal adviser to him and donor back in 2008. he served as the top attorney on the pentagon as you mentioned. the two men really see eye to eye on a lot of things when it comes to national security issues. johnson did help to oversee the sort of ramping up of the drone program and also ending don't ask, don't tell and like president obama, he has expressed his opposition to this idea of an endless war against terrorism. it's reported that the two men really do have a strong rapport having known each other for quite some time. in terms of his chances for actually getting approved by the senate, i am told by one top senate aide, that there's no reason to think he won't get confirmed. there has been some opposition, senator john cornyn saying that he is essentially a donor to president obama because of the 2008 campaign and also expressing criticism of him for not
