let's discuss what's going on with jay jeh johnson.for joining us. 20 years after this attack on 9/11, did you ever think you would see the taliban controlling afghanistan with the united states grappling with domestic terror here at home? >> it does seem as though things have come full circle in a 20-year ark, doesn't it, wolf? but circumstances are different. i was down at ground zero, the world trade center today, this morning, and i will be there again tomorrow for the observance. i try to go every year. each year i go, which happens to be my birthday, it feels as though things have never changed. i am working today in the same law firm in private law practice that i was in 20 years ago, and i watched the towers collapse from our midtown office that i work from now. things are very different. 20 years ago there was no department of homeland security. bin laden was alive. since then, we created a department of homeland security. i ended up leading it for three years. we got bin laden in 2011. al-qaeda has been degraded. they're no l

joining us the jeh johnson who served as homeland security secretary. on these matters. the congressman who represents this district is calling this a humanitarian crisis on steroids. what do you call this? >> ana, this was -- i own this issue for three years as secretary of homeland security. this was by far the most intractable, difficult issue i ever worked on in public life. if you go to any border congressional district, laretto, texas, for example, they'll tell you that we should be fair and humane to migrants. we should support daca and support the daca population. we should give people an opportunity for a path to citizenship if they've been in this country for years. but they also want us to control our borders. we have to get control of our borders. 200,000 a month is a lot of people. dhs just released the numbers for august. it's 200,000. august is typically a month where it's very low. and those kinds of numbers and the images you just showed your audience saps the ability. it overwhelms the ability of dhs, the border patrol, i.c.e. to cope

let's dig deeper, bring in jeh johnson. he is on the board of the 9/11 memorial and museum.ore 9/11, intelligence gathering in this country was spread out across a bunch of agencies. we didn't have a department of homeland security. where are we today in terms of assessing and identifying threats? >> well, in terms of assessing and identifying threats i think we're much better than we were, we're much better at connecting the dots. i was not a fan of the creation of dni when it was created in 2002 or 2003. i thought it was another layer of unnecessary bureaucracy. but i've seen it work. as a consumer intelligence products, when i was second of homeland security, if you have the right kind of leadership over the intelligence community. we're much better connecting the dots. i believe if there were another large scale plot like a 9/11 today involving so many actors, our fbi, our dhs, intelligence community hopefully would be able to detect that at an early stage. it is smaller scale plots where we are challenged, self radicalized actors and all the things pete mentioned, cyber

to put this in perspective, president obama's secretary of homeland security, jeh johnson, stated in his tenure that 1,000 apprehensions a day was considered a bad day. we are more than six times than that and we face a global pandemic. we're currently watching a debacle unfold in del rio, texas, where there was approximately 15,000 migrants crossing the rio grande. this surge is overwhelming and already overburden system and c.b.p. needs congress to focus on this crisis. while it's promising the c.b.p. will be surging resources to the area, it remains extremely worrisome to me they have not tested these migrants and i understand there is also a measles outbreak at fort bliss. moreover, we continue to see the border careers at vary -- crisis at varying scales. programs such as the migrant protection protocols and title 42 health restrictions should be utilized to help stem illegal migration and help keep our communities safe during the pandemic. notably, the d.h.s. o.i.g. report says that it has negatively impact on the covid-19 mitigation measures and creates increased risk. i encou
