jeju airlines will be involved. the engine manufacturer cfm international, which is a joint venture between france and the united states. they will be involved as well. there they are, the major parties to the investigation. if, for instance, there was an undercarriage fault, was a big issue or a major issue, then the undercarriage manufacturer, um, would also be involved in the investigation under icao rules. that's the international civil aviation organisation. the korean authorities got have got 30 days to issue a preliminary report. obviously, if there's a safety issue identified early on in the investigation, they would notify the manufacturer and all airlines of the safety issue that was found. also, the air traffic control people will be involved in this as well, as part of the investigation. and, uh, and, geoffrey, of course, we understand a crash like this is rare, as you were talking about a little earlier, but how does an incident like this reverberate through the industry, but also in the region where yo

this is jeju air, which is south korea's largest budget airline that was founded in 2005. if you want to get to a destination, be it jeju island here in south korea, bangkok, any of the regional major tourist attractions. jeju air is a way that people go on a budget. a relatively strong safety record. but besides this plume of smoke that we're looking at, we're starting to review other images and verifying these images and pieces of video that have been coming in to us here at cnn showing the seconds of what was happening before the aircraft had this violent explosion and appears to have crashed into a wall at the end of the runway at muan international airport. now we're still verifying those images, but one of the main things that we're looking at and investigators from here, and most certainly the united states, since this is a boeing aircraft, will be looking at what was going on with the landing gear, the landing gear. jessica does not appear from these early images we're looking at to have been deployed. and just from speaking to my buddy pete muntean, our chief aviat

and miles, just first off, we're just learning that southwest airlines says it's now working with investigators in the jeju air crash. can you tell us why they might be involved? >> i you know, southwest airlines has an awful lot of experience with that particular. >> 737 model. perhaps that might have some they might bring some expertise to bear. >> they have had a couple of overrun events themselves. beyond that, i don't know. >> yeah. it'll be interesting to find that out. i didn't mean to pop quiz you because we're just learning these things. but we officials are saying that the pilot reported this bird strike before the crash. and then you also have the plane's landing gear not down in the either pair of landing gear. could those two things be connected? >> probably not. brianna. there's no reason to believe that an engine failure, even two engine failure, would make it impossible for the crew to bring down the landing gear. the the absolute last ditch way of doing that is literally pulling on a cable which attaches to a latch, and the gear just falls down by virtue of gravity, so that is not likely.

in the last few minutes, jeju air issued have issued an apology in response to the muan airport plane crash. the airline said: "in this incident at muan airport. "we will do all we can to respond to the incident. "we are sorry for the distress." for more on this, i spoke tojonathan head, our south east asia correspondent. what is the latest you are hearing about the status of the plane, what might have happened that led to the crash? we have seen one video, which we are trying to authenticate, filmed from the side of the runway. it appears to show the flight on the boeing operated byjeju air trying to land, running along the runway without the nose wheel deployed and a lot of smoke coming from the rear wheels which would suggest perhaps it was breaking hard and then going off the end of the runway and slamming into either a fence or wall it's not clear. i think it is a fence, and bursting immediately into flame. the pilot had had a problem and done a go around already so the emergency services at muan airport were alerted and would have been there very quickly. they employed a lot of fire engines and ot
