louis. >> woodruff: jelani cobb, something the former mayor of ferguson said a few moments ago is this could happen anywhere. you have been on the streets of ferguson for the last few days. do you agree with that? >> well, i think recent history shows that not only could it happen anywhere, it has happened in several other places. there are some really terrible overlaps here, one of which is a striking irony that tracy martin, the father of trayvon martin, who was slain two years ago under circumstances i think we're all familiar with, he was scheduled to actually be in this area for an event that will take place on august 24th promoting non-violence called peace fest, and he agreed to attend this program a week before michael brown was killed. he's now coming here under very different circumstances. so we've seen all these things happen before. that notwithstanding, i think it's very troubling to say in the context of a community that's grieving, that's devastated and that certainly feels a great deal of resentment in the way in which it's being policed, that there is nothing atypical

the moment where they have released the images of the potential michael brown and we heard from jelani cobb that was part of reigniting this. is the ferguson police department the most inept local police department in the country, or is this par for the course? >> you have to know that's a loaded question for someone who deals with law enforcement all the time. >> this is stunning, right? >> it is absolutely stunning. i have to say there are many -- as you heard captain johnson came on afterwards and was troubled by the release of the michael brown footage. there are owes in law enforcement that were troubled by it especially because, as we just heard, the officer who ended up shooting and killing michael brown didn't have that information in his head as the reason for the stop. right? and it is the case that sometimes smaller departments haven't dealt with these larger scale issues and are not connected to agencies and training that prepares them for something like that. >> so, jelani, let me come back to you on this because, as much as i absolutely appreciate the idea that potentially sma

jelani cobb, raul reyes and the audience, thank you for sticking with us. i'm glad and personally proud we were able to bring you those images. this is a difficult story, of course, to cover in a lot of ways and images you have been seeing out of ferguson have been ugly ones, quite frankly. ugly ones are a reminder of so many wounds to be healed in this country. here you are seeing the pictures earlier that mother and father still mourning for their son, a 18-year-old gunned down in the street and we don't know how many times he was shot and the answers they don't have and the community doesn't have about a young black man and i can say another young black man unarmed gunned down. the person who shot and killed him right now is not under arrest but this is how our justice system works and we need to let it play out. here, we are a week and a day after the death of 18 michael brown jr. rest in peace. not quiet. but maybe we will get there. i'm t.j. holmes for msnbc. thank you so much for being with us on this sunday evening. i ran in here and took a selfie.
