olderm jennings bryan's brother pushed him. at that time he was a divisive figure in the party, but the name and was -- democrats hoped would allow him to win a lot of rural votes. charles bryan --his nomination for vice president was an attempt to keep some progressive farm vote on his side, and for the most part they did not succeed. >> our next call joins us from pennsylvania. go ahead, terry. caller: very interesting talk. you stated william jennings bryan was a fundamentalist and a progressive, and i believed states like kansas and nebraska that have large fundamentalists populations but also very -- today they arema conservative. what happened to cause this change? >> that is a good question. it had a lot to do west the active -- to do with the economic conditions of his day. now the prosperity changed in the 20th-century in ways he could not have predicted. bryan for shattered some of five in his commitment to faith in public life, but his faith was based around the social gospel movement and applied christianity. helpin

bryan -- of william jennings bryan. he said that grover cleveland hating william jennings bryan and he was not able to finish. i am curious what he hated him for and if that was true. >> i will start. you can follow up. grover cleveland was a hard money democratic president. he did not like bryan's position. it was the silver at issue and the income tax that bryan had championed in the house and helped pass. it was the breaking of the cleveland administration of the purchase act that most got the ire of clover cleveland -- of grover cleveland. >> the democratic party, of commercial interests, especially from the east where cleveland was from. people who believed in thomas jefferson and that the government should not do very much in the economy. during the depression of the 1890's, grover cleveland said that the people should support the government but the government should not support the people. this is different from what bryan believed. he was a liberal. in our parlance today. he was a democratic liberal. he believed

state of our justice system let's one of the questions i posed to filmmaker and human rights activist jen marlo here's her take. well i think one of the reasons troy davis is case has gotten the attention that it has is because in many ways his case is emblematic of all that is problematic with the us penalty system much of what you just said in your introduction the fact the fact that the state can be. scheduling in preparing to put a man to death for whom the case against him has entirely unraveled cory's case i think highlights so much of what is flawed in our justice system especially when there are claims of innocence that there really is not an adequate way for those claims to be heard and that a case like juries can go through the court system appeal after appeal court after court and what's reviewed as opposed courts are not able to focus on the larger issues of innocence or whether this conviction was reliable and instead they're focused on on the procedural issues or the technicalities and so. so someone like troy davis can march steadily towards death row and towards an executi

i'm cheryl jennings. kristen sze is off today. we want to move on to other news the proposition banning same-sex marriage is being debated at this hour in front of the california supreme court. panel is hearing arguments on whether sponsors have the legal standing to appeal a federal ruling that a ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. terry mcsweeney is outside the state building. a lot of activity outside court today. >> reporter: is two debates, one in front of the state supreme court justices and one on the steps. two different topics. take a look at the video on the stipulates. those opposed of prop 8 and those in favor of prop 8 and they are talking about the issue that voters passed back in 2008. that is not the topic of the day. inside the building, the justices are talking about whether the lawyers for proposition 89 can represent the measure in court. do they have legal standing to challenge the judge's ruling that prop 8 is unconstitutional because it violates the rights of gays and lesbians. listen to a clip of two s
