let's check in with our financial correspondent jens korte. jens, $12 billion.ill that be enough to shield the agricultural industry? jens: it is a start but it might not do the trick. the u.s. agricultural indndustry is the one industry that probably got hit hardest so far from the ongoing trade dispute with countries like china, mexico and canada, and the agricultural industry is one of the few industries that actually is running a trade surplus, meaning exports were tha -- more than it imports. last year it was a good $21 billion. donald trump on tuesday also announced that farmers should be patient in the long run they should be the big winners from the trade policy of the white house. as for now, obviously, farmers need to get support from washington. helena: we should point out as well that shares in washing machine company whirlpool have been down 14% on tuesday. they were a proponent of stricter trade controls on its industry but it doesn't seem to be working out quite how it hoped, does it? jens: it is a very interesting development, because whirlpool e

good to see you, jens. the consumer confidence was quite a surprise.o should consumers really be all that confident? jens: well, it looks pretty good, especially when you look at the job market. even if wages are not really increasing that much at this point. but there was also a survey out where people were asked how confident they are to find a new job. this survey actually hit the highest level in about 17 years. then also consumer confidence is close to an eight year -- 18 year high. the labor market does look quite promising, and on top of that we have tech stocks feeling the economy for now. helena: they do show caution about long-term growth. why is that? jens: well, first of all the u.s. economy is expanding for the ninth straight year. so this is basically the second-longest expansion face in u.s. history. so, at some point it is pretty likely the economy will turn, even if no one knows precisely that is going to happen. then also we can see the federal reserve start to increase interest rates, so that can block economic growth little bit. the

jens: well, u.s.orilla's for not paying -- are notorious for not being too many taxes. even before u.s. president donald trump started this tax reform earlier this year, a lot of the u.s. tech companies paid far less corporate taxes than the overall demand of 35%. quite often they would pay less than 20%. one of the main reasons for that is when it comes to intellectual property rights, a lot of the tech companies actually this those -- actually list those rights somewhere in cheap-tax countries, and therefore they can avoid higher taxes than what they are supposed to pay in the united states was the do american tech colonies pay taxes in the u.s.? sure they do, but quite often far less taxes than we have seen in other areas. the same especially when it comes to those intellectual property rights is true for the pharmaceutical industry. they are also notorious for paying low taxes. u.s. technology companies pay their share, but less than other industries. helena: what are you context, financial corres

jens: well, then again the u.s.resident also wanted t to prott steel and aluminum makers, and that increases costs for the car industry. not just carmakers, but also suppliers, car dealers. they are out with open letters on wednesday and thursday in some u.s. publications to make a case that those tariffs, if they come, they will be hurtful to the u.s. car industry. it will increase prices and eventually even lead to job losses. when of the complaints from the u.s. is that people in germany or japan do not buy enough cars. that would really change if we put tariffs on zero remains to be seen. but obviously the car industry is not happy with the trade policy of the current administration. phil: -- daniel: perhaps those tariffs are backfiring. jens, thank you very much. cabin crew strikes in spain, portugal and belgium. they say they will disrupt travel plans for around 100,000 passengers. it has offered affected travelers refunds and accommodation where appropriate. employees are demanding better pay and conditions.
