. >> you open this new book with a case of the jena six. can you talk about this case and why it has sets up some of these arguments for what is gone ron? >> the jena six is an example of a case that got a lot of know to write a because it drew attention to a real problem but it turned out not to be a great example of the broader social problem. the broader problem is again the high incarceration rates of young black men, problem in the criminal justice system, racial inequities in disparities. this specific case involves six young black men and a small town in the south who were arrested for an attack, an assault. one in particular was charged initially with attempted murder. obviously gross overreaching on the part of the prosecutor, huge overcharge but that charge was subsequently reduced. he was also tried as an adult in that conviction was reversed on appeal but the surrounding circumstances were such that initially it sounded like the perfect case for an old-school jim crow style racial bigotry. there was a tree that was in the school
