jenna: i'm jenna lee. hi, everybody, we're glad you're with us in the fox news room and happening now. new poll numbers out of florida, with less than a week to go before the primary. jon: the american research group finding former massachusetts governor mitt romney ahead in florida. he has 41% of the vote. former house speaker newt gingrich has 34. jenna: in the latest "quinnipiac poll" if the race were between president obama and mitt romney they're both tied at 45%. jon: compare that to a contest between mr. obama and newt gingrich. president obama with 50% and newt gingrich with 39. bob cusack, managing editor of "the hill." what is the significance of these numbers, bob? >> i think it is pretty significant. mitt romney is starting to gain. the newt is starting to slip. the big question is this the beginning of mitt romney's come back or is this the beginning of the end for mitt romney? you can't overestimate or over state how important florida is. in 2008 john mccain won florida and that was nominatio

jenna: i'm jenna lee. we're here in the fox newsroom and "happening now", first in the south primary 10 days away. nearly all the gop presidential hopefuls are in south carolina where the stakes are very high because the winner there has gone on to get the republican nomination since 1980. it is a key state, jon. jon: mitt romney's rivals are sharpening up their attacks on him. hoping tea party voters in south carolina, conservatives can be persuaded not to jump on the romney bandwagon after he picks up momentum after that big win in new hampshire racked up 39% of the vote. coming in way ahead of second place finisher ron paul. jenna: molly line with the wrap-up. molly, romney and paul achieving a measure of victory but south carolina is very different place than new hampshire. what are they saying about moving forward? >> reporter: exactly, jenna. first and second these men and moving forward to south carolina. both have a lot of optimism. mitt romney knows he will face a number of tax. their campaign is

jenna? jenna: all right, carl, stay around with us. jon, i believe we found another carl to bring into this conversation. jon: we'll have the karl twins with us. karl rove, former senior advisor to president george w. bush and a fox news contributor is with us now. mitt romney has in the words of one newspaper, dropped all pretense and said last night we're going to win this thing, meaning the iowa caucuses. do you see him positioned to do that? >> he could. he stepped back from the incident and said he was talking about the nomination. if you look at "real clear politics" average there have been six polls since christmas. mitt romney leads in five of the six. his lead though is very small. and the average of those six polls it is 22.8% to 21.5% for ron paul. rick santorum then in at 16%. but, it's very, it is too close to call. we have three contenders here. organization matters. carl cameron was absolutely right. you go into any one of these 1744 caucus meetings and somebody gets up and make as particularly good speech it sways minds

jenna: hi, everybody, i'm jenna lee. we are here in the fox newsroom, "happening now" nine days before the first in the south primary, nearly all the republican candidates are trekking through south carolina today, while early voting is already underway in florida, even though that primary isn't until the end of the month. tens of thousands of folks have sent in their absentee ballots, so it is ongoing at this time. mitt romney is gearing up for a red light lee in the sunshine state. he's headed toward the sun, probably a wise move in the winter, right, jon. jon: sound good to me. the real clear average of political polls shows mitt romney with a more than 9-point lead over newt gingrich, his closes rival. and gingrich who want held a big lead in that state is going after romney hard, releasing a 30-minute video attacking him, portraying romney as a corporate raider at the time he headed the investment firm bain capital. jenna: mike emanuel is live to tell us more about this. tell us what has evolved and what to expect.

jenna: i'm jenna lee.vals are leaving the pack, mitt romney, rick santorum and paul r- ron paul taking the top spots in iowa. as we've seen for iowa voters it was a tough decision. john roberts live in des moines with more on this. a lot of conversation on this today about how big exactly this boost was for romney with such a narrow victory. >> reporter: it's really difficult to know at this point, but his numbers are such in new hampshire that it probably doesn't matter a whole lot. governor romney is on the ground in new hampshire east launches phase two of this primary campaign, coming out of iowa with that slim eight-vote margin. easy head by more than 20 points in the granite state. if he spent a little more time, met a few more people, didn't need to spend more money because he spent a lot of it might he have increased his budget over 25% and given himself a better launching pad to get into this presidential nominating year. mitt romney in terms of what he's going to be hitting on, as far as themes g

jenna: right. jenna: who is watching it?tigation or a branch that is looking at their communication? is someone watching the communication between super pacs and candidates? >> well, obviously no federal agency can watch day by day the sorts of communication. if there is a complaint filed with the federal election commission they can look into it. but in reality the candidates themselves can actually appear in ads for super pacs. they can raise money for the super pacs. there is very little that is actually prohibited. >> let me ask you what happens to super pacs if the candidates drop out? you mentioned mitt romney. we know he is the frontrunner at this point. but hypothetically say he doesn't make it to the end. then does his super pac, does it operate without him as a candidate? can it operate independent of him and switch alliance? do they have the freedom to do that? >> this is kind of a gray area what happens to the money in a super pac if a candidate drops out of the well the money can be spent in some other way. ther
