jennifer, what are things that people can do around their homes to help. >> well, there are a couple of big important things. some people want to have colonies in their backyard and it's great. and i had a couple of them in my backyard and i loved collecting honey from them. but one thing, when we buy landscape plants, we make sure that we don't use pesticides in our gardens, and when we purchase them, they haven't been pretreated with pesticide. we are finding that many ornamental landscape plants are treated with test sides in the store before people buy them. and they're treated at such high levels that they're staying in the plants for years. >> if you go into a big box home, how do you know? >> they're not even labeled, the best thing to do, go to the store and say, i don't want any plants that have been treated with pesticides, so make sure that what you sell me is pesticide free. because they will serve the consumer's interests. >> on facebook: here's a video. >> insecticides are harming these, but we can't look at this issue in isolation. to survive, pollinators need save pla

our jennifer gray is here with what you can expect. what do we need to know, jennifer? this is more of a rain event. this will set up. we have the moisture air feeding from the south with the form temperatures from the southeast, it will be the set-up for a potential tornado outbreak. we could see damaging winds. we are seeing ice. as we zoom down to oklahoma city, we see some reports of about .25 of ice and power outages as well. it will be a slow go across 40 and 44 and interstate 35 for the next few hours. slight risk of severe weather across the south. a moderate risk, including shreveport and memphis and little rock through the afternoon today. what we are dealing with the x severe weather set up, we have cold air behind the front. when the two air masses collide, it is creating a spring-like system as we go through the next day or so. the he is severe threat shifts to the east. because of this, we will see travel delays in kansas city and chicago and dallas and points in between from one to two hours. sleet and freezing rain as we go through the next day or. two t

let's check in with jennifer. do i need to pull out my long johns and my thick socks and leggings and hat? >> not yet. we are setting records across the east coast for warm weather on the first official day of winter. temperatures stabilize the next couple days. the major cold weather is still in the west. the wmidwest. we are seeing rain and ice transition into snow from kansas to missouri. the texas man handle is getting snow now. the big story has been the severe weather. that's what we are watching throughout the afternoon. we have tornado watches in effect until 6:00 p.m. for much of louisiana and southeast texas including houston, then places like memphis. that is central time. we have actually already started to see severe thunderstorms pop up. we have two active warnings right now in north louisiana. one is going to expire around 2:15 local time and another one about 2:45 local time. these are packing winds of 16 miles per hour. we have one in east texas as well right around center texas. that is a big one

>> how cold is it, jennifer? >> it's some kind of cold out here.feeling like the teens. it's going to feel like that tonight as the ball drops. we will start seeing the people pack the streets in the next couple of hours. temperatures will top out today in the 30s, barely above friesen. and then dropping into the teens as the ball drops. there is a bigger story setting up across the country, that is that area of low pressure we've been tracking. it will be marching across the country. the problem is we already have cold air in place. as the low tracks to the east, we've been watching this. the one closer to shore could create quite a bit of snowfall across a large portion of the northeast. we'll be continuing to track it thursday night into friday. that's the time frame we're looking at. if it does take that track, guys, closer to shore we could see anywhere from 6 to 8 inches of snow in new york and 8 to 10 inches in boston. a very snowy scenario shaping up for the first week of 2014. >> thank you. did you know some kind of cold is an official wea

jennifer, these protests have been going on for weeks. i understand the crowds have died down a little but still quite a few people. what's happening now? >> reporter: well, the crowds richelle are thinning out. we saw thousands of people gather on independence square, the fifth sunday in a row we've seen that. an indication that the pro testings are still going -- protests are still going on. the opposition that spoke to the crowd say they hope they will celebrate new year's here, they want to start a new people's movement across civic organizations a people's organization called the independence movement here, to try to keep the momentum going, i think that's really the problem richelle what will happen next. some of the pro testingors are very -- protestors are very tired, very haven't heard anything against the government against the progovernment stance that these people want. they want to see some reforms. the country's economy is in a terrible state, unemployment is very high. there's a lot of suction disin gas and -- subsidies in
