park police heard the call and one of them jumped in his car to meet up with jennifer bennett who was shot here on the grounds. we'll hear from officer matt cooney in his own words. >> we weren't sure where we were going. we came down and saw mtv officials directing officers where to go. so people were taking cover near building 197. and he directed us to an officer that was by himself and said, the three of you, you are on our team and go. there's the door. as we were on the first floor in the atrium area, we could hear that he was up on the third floor, so we were brought that way. i found myself with a team on the roof, because we thought alexis was up there at the time. and checked the roof, he's not there, thank goodness, but there we have four civilians, including miss bennett. and i called the helicopter circling overhead and said, hey, this is who i am, this is what i have here and this is what i need. and what i need is for you to come to take her to the hospital, get her out of here as quick as possible. >> and we talked to jennifer bennett and that helicopter crew about the

we talked to jennifer bennett and the helicopter crew that rescued her, about the rescue and the bondted in the last year. we'll hear from her and how she considers the officers family now tonight at 5:00. >>> and we are talking about security in the wake of the navy yard. there's only been minimal movement really on that point. the shooter did have a security clearance and history of violence and mental health issues. there's a number of proposals in the last year reducing the number of people eligible for clearances and digger deeper into police records of candidates for clearances. there's been legislation passed as well but only impacting on a minor level. congress approved funding for the office of personnel management to double-check questionable information. beyond that, no really major changes in place of security procedures at military installations. the background checks movement has bead. we'll have more from the navy yard about what's happening in here later on today, the ceremony to be happening as we watch more people stream inside to get in place for the ceremony happen

. >> jennifer bennett recalling the hour and 20 minutes she spent isolated on out building 197. while below, aaron alexis continued to shoot, dying in a gun battle with police. >> everyone says i was calm. i was as scared as everybody else. >> captain emerged as the leader of the rooftop gang. >> i felt safe with him. >> and that's all there was, the four of us. that immediately requires the four of us to lean on each other in our strengths and our beliefs and our character. helicopter lifting jen and the other three survivors to safety. a rescue that came only after the gang scribbled a note and threw it down to the ground. after 911 calls on a cell phone proved fruitless in the chaos. >> probably been there for 45 minutes before they had a notebook. odds are, somebody is going to pick it up and low and behold, that happened. >> no one but family and friends knew who the gang were until opening day of the nats season. threw out the first pitch, by coworkers, michael jackson. jen's wounds required three surgeries so far. a trial of pain that continues. but here's what they want

you heard in jennifer's introduction that my wife and i are coming out with a book called "founders' advice." i know this has been done before. secretary bennett did it a number of years ago. though what he did is considerably different from what we are trying to do. i have a background as a historian, but i am married to a woman who was in business, in washington, d.c., working for a defense contractor. she had the opportunity to go to seattle to work for a small start up company that had not yet gone public, microsoft. and when she started with microsoft, it was such a small company that they could have employee meetings in a small auditorium, a lunchroom. and she had the opportunity to listen to this man, time and time again, named bill gates, who didn't talk about making good products and capturing market share, but he talked about changing the world. and i think for her that was such a heady experience, the experience of being in a company like that at that point of time was so remarkable, that she began to take an interest in the whole idea of success. what is success? how does it happen? what do successful people perhaps have in common
