reporter jennifer davis joins us now along one of the hardest hit areas ocean city, new jersey. good morning, again jennifer. >> reporter: good morning, pam. sandy left an appropriately named calling card here mounds and mounds of sand. there is 18-inches that spilled the roadway here for blocks and blocks as far as the eye can see. front loaders, city crews are out trying to clear the streets. they were at it yesterday, back at it today. they are making enormous piles here. this is call considered contaminated. so they can't put it back on the beach. they are loading it up into dump trucks and taking it to the end of the street where it's creating a mountain of sand. but even for the dump trucks it can be tough going. we saw one get stuck in here earlier this morning and you can tell why. look. it creates a ledge here as the front loader moves through because there is so much sand. they say this happened because the dune systems failed early monday morning and once it did it was a nonstop onslaught for the rest of the day. this isn't their only problem here in ocean city. of cou

our reporter jennifer davis is joining us live in ocean city, new jersey where hundreds of homes were wiped out. so jennifer, we're looking behind you what is the latest? >> reporter: hi there, dave. what has happened here is interesting. take a look at the ground. there is 18 inches of sand here on the ground. as far as the eye can see. anureses kept said it's like it snowed but it's not going to melt and go away on its own. it really does stretch at least a quarter to half a mile down there. that is as far as i can see. they tell us the dunes broke here very early monday morning. and then it was an on slot of sand throughout the day. getting through here is very treacherous. a dump truck that was trying to help the situation got stucked in middle of that block. they did have a drying cur cue -- driving curfew in place. we are not seeing a lot of residents coming through. it's mostly work crews. we are just about a block not even right off the beach right there. it's a beautiful day out there on the water. it's sunny. and it's certainly helpful it's getting a tiny bit warmer. people

. >>> fox's jennifer davis joins now. she is in ocean city, new jersey this morning. jennifer has a look at the conditions on the hard hit coast, four days later. good morning to you, jennifer. >> reporter: good morning, allison. after four days they still can't get around a number of the streets here in ocean city. these are more streets that were swallowed up by sea water. they are packed with several inches of this dense wet sand. it's been very difficult to clear, even though you can tell they made some headway. that way it looks really bad. they still don't have power around here in a number of places. schools are closed. there's so much debris and damage to deal with. here and up and down the jersey coast it's not just about the physical damage, but the emotional toll. the massive damage left behind from the storm has some homeowners breaking down in tears. >> i just spent $30,000 getting my home repaired and it's all gone. >> 22 years i've been in my home. [crying] >> reporter: others say they have nothing left and no place to go. >> we have nothing. no credit c

joining us live in new jersey is jennifer davis. good morning, jennifer. >> good morning to you.this is a community where homes have been passed down through the generations and people say it's beloved by people who have been coming for decades. it is far from an idyllic sanctuary. the force of sandy blew away the bulkhead and then battered these homes, blowing out entire sides of them. every one of them on this step of beach has been labeled unsafe to enter. the national guard is in this community this morning, as they are around the state. there is still flooding to contend with and hoboken, thousands remain trapped because of flood waters. the national guard is bringing them food and water and the mayor is asking for more supplies. there are still widespread power outages in the state. it has been restored to about 500,000 people, but more than 2 million remain in the dark. they say that more than half the gas stations in new york city and new jersey either are out of power or out of gas. so long lines stretch around the stations that are open and working. it's still very much

let's bring in jennifer davis, retail analyst, for her take on this. uld imagine it's too early to tell. so far what are you finding in terms of jane was reporting on door busters gone very early on. can a store like a best buy with no more door busters or special keep them coming on in? >> let me just say that we follow a lot of the mall based retailers so we're in the malls most of the time where there isn't a best buy. so last night we were in the malls starting at midnight and it was very, very busy. that's when the teams are out shopping. the teen retailers were busy. so traffic died down in the malls around 4:00 or 5:00 this morning. a little slower now than it was last year. so still early to make a call. we'll be back in there to see what's going on. >> were people buying things or hanging out at the mall? >> i hope if they're there at midnight until 3:00 in the morning they are buying. i would say about 75% of the shoppers had bags and most of those people had multiple bags. people were definitely there buying. >> maybe you can answer this ques
