jennifer franciotti explains. >> michael johnson faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of killing phylicia barnes. his defense team is asking for a new trial. lawyers argue misconduct on the part of the prosecution, much of the argument centering on main witness james mccray. during the trial, he testified that johnson called him and admitted to raping and tobarnes and told him that he needed help wbaltv.com raping -- raping and killing barnes and that he needed help getting rid of the body. johnson's attorneys say that the jury was influenced to believe his testimony. baltimore city state attorney gregg bernstein says that the motion was not unexpected. >> after the verdict, filing motions for a new trial, that is pretty standard, and we will respond in due course. >> police commissioner anagony that -- anthony batts says that a review is underway about the department's use of guns and tasers. an officer accidently -- a training exercise, an officer axilla grabbed his service weapon. >> we are moving quickly to correct those to make sure that ou

i'm jennifer franciotti. here's a look at some of our top stories for you this morning. city police are calling the death of a woman found dead inside her burning baltimore home suspicious. it happened just before 2:30 friday afternoon at the home on high gate grive. when crews first arrived they found smoke and once inside firefighters discovered the woman's body. >> the firefighters performed search and rescue operations when they found a non-responsive unconscious woman in the basement of this location. >> and police say they won't release anymore details until the release from the autopsy comes in. meanwhile firefighters are still investigating what may have caused that fire. an annapolis mother is facing charges in the death of her 2-year-old daughter. chelsea booth age 25 admitted she smothered her daughter cassidy because she claims the father pat muslim curse on her daughter and the toddler was possessed. police later found the body in a rail car filled with trash bound for an out of state landfill. b

and welcome to 11 news sunday morning i'm jennifer franciotti. >> and i'm lisa robinson. let's take a look outside with our meteorologist, avery johnson. >> we have had temperatures mild and now the they are mott ter is skyrocketting. temperatures in the mid to up ir40's. i may even have to bump up the high temperature for today. moving off the coast, we had some sprinkles in baltimore this morning, that's about it. now the sunshine has us at 44 degrees at the airport but i saw 47 on tv hill and the highs today should at least get up into the low 50's and a few of you in the mid 50's. winds gusting up to 20 miles an hour. keep that in mind if you have outdoor activities. >> well, if you heard a loud boom around the cold spring lane area. that was the reason, around 7:00 a.m. this morning bg&e imploded the gas holder near west cold spring lane that has been out of use since 1997. >> it was really fast. it was kind of over and done with before i had a chance to focus on it. >> i wanted to see the piece of history that was gone. short. it was fun to watch. >> company says th

. >> welcome to 11 news saturday morning i'm jennifer franciotti and lisa robinson. >> last night a blast of wind hit the house that shook everything. >> no kidding. >> did you fall out of the bed? >> no. but it got my attention. i'll tell you that much and that's the big storm that's spinning out there. to be honest i've looked at snow totals. in new england seems to be where the heaviest has fallen. in massachusetts but winds are steady in the 50's and 60's. in a few cases hurricane force winds. i don't know how they measure snow in winds like that. but there's this huge nor'easter and we're on the outer edges of it. that's why we're experiencing some windy conditions this morning. i was really buffered around on the highway coming in. winds out of the north and northwest and on the backside of the storm, it's giving us a glancing blow with a few snow showers. mostly east of the bay. let me change my view here for a second. there's new england and you can see the storm spinning, the storm center itself is in the vicinity of cape cod and from connecticut to long island. new york city is

. >> and i'm jennifer franciotti. >> that wet snow continues to pile up dumping more than two feet of snow in new england and this morning four deaths are blamed on that storm. >> and more than 600,000 homes and businesses are without power with the numbers expected to go up and travel disrupted from airlines to trains, really having a rippling effect across the country. amtrak has suspended service from new york to boston. >> good morning from boston where the winds let up a bit but the snow is still falling and it will continue falling. the official count at logan airport 21.4 inches. that number will increase. more than 400,000 in this state without power and more than 650,000 across new england without power. those numbers could climb as well. >> the winter storm pounding the northeast since friday continued to strengthen overnight into a fierce and relentless blizzrt. gusts up to 75 miles an hour creating blinding conditions. the projected snowfall numbers are staggering. up to three feet is expected in including boston. most of new england has been stopped in its tracks and more

. >> i am jennifer franciotti. first a check out side with john coming back from breakfast saw big flat flakes out there. >> in town it was raining all night. north of us there was snow mixed in icy slippery conditions. dropped a degree. we are getting the snowflakes. just off maybe 500 feet or so the temperatures have dropped below freezing the flakes make it all of the way to the ground. take a look at the radar. the bulk of the precipitation via a mix or just rain has moved east of us. most of it is on the eastern shore. but the whitish or pinkish areas are mostly some kind of snowflake in the sky. maybe a little raindrop action mixed in. near the bay or south central and southern portions of the delmar vay it is just rain. a few snowflakes or flurries reach back into baltimore county or harper county which most of it is in the bay eastward at this stage of the game. there is going to be a coastal storm developing that will be a snow maker for some folks. tell you who coming up in just a minute. >> thanks. remem

i am jennifer franciotti. the time is 7:55.at some of the top stories for you this morning. the public service commission has approved a bge request to increase gas and electric rates starting today. state regulators approved about 65 percent of the utilities $175 million request. the bse says the average customer will see a 3.33 increase per month for electricity and a $2.70 hike each month for gas. >> we believe it's a good first step. at the end of the day it does fall short of what we need going forward. and we have a very complex and aging system. we have to continue to modernize it. >> the increase will go toward improvements to pipes wires, poles and transformers. it will help them meet state and federal safety and reliability mandates. the house yesterday passed the maryland offshore wind energy act. it heads to the senate finance committee. that creates the framework to establish a wind turbine farm off the coast of ocean city. residential rate payers would help sense dies the venture with 1.50 added to the monthly uti
