jennifer glass is at macy's. what have you seen so far tonight? >> macy's opened its doors for the first time in 155 years, shoppers flooded in. they came in huge numbers, and it's supercrowded. we were in there earlier tonight. it's wall to wall people on every floor. they are trying to manage people on and off the escalators. we talked to a couple of shoppers. including a number of women that can't do this in their home state. >> we are from massachusetts, the stores will not open on thanksgiving. there's no way. we think it's different. but, you know what, when in new york, do as new york does. it's different. i mean, it feels odd, it doesn't feel like thanksgiving , but we are not home either. >> so, you know, a lot of shoppers were torn when we asked them what do you think it's like shopping on thanksgiving. should macy's be open. a lot of shoppers were in there because the parade. we were from outside of town. we met new yorkers that had had their thanksgiving dinner. it was okay. macy's opened at 8:00 pm. that was not the case across the co

. >> jennifer glasse has been coveri covering near -- afghanistan for nearly three years. nnifer explain what he is doing. >> no one really knows what ham hamid karzai is up to. maybe he is worried about his legacy. maybe he doesn't want to be the man that turns over after sovereignty to americans. but it has been a very confusing time. >> how unusual is it for the afghan president to take an even more hard lined position than the tribal leaders? >> he has done this before. he has pushed very hard to the edge and gotten a lot of concessions before. but when you have the national security council saying if you don't sign this by the end of the year, we're going to have to consider pulling all troops out after 2014. >> getting the tribal leaders to approve this, was that a close call? >> it was a very handpicked [ inaudible ]. it's not just signing the agreement they asked for. they asked for a number of other things including additional military places. i think it didn't come as too much of a surprise because the afghans understand the need for some sort of support there in

jennifer glasse joins us. hamid karzai directly to susan rice's face, i'm not going to agree to what the tribal leaders have agreed to. how can he do that? >> we've seen this kind of brinksmanship before, but everybody is very surprised by it, when they came out on sunday and said please sign it he absolutely ignored them. we have seen a little bit of softening in his stance today. >> how so? >> he gave an interview to radio free europe and said he lessened his demands. he had initially demanded that the united states release taliban prisoners from guantanamo bay, he is saying he still wants help with the peace process but didn't mention those prisoners and he also did not mention the elections which he had said he wanted u.s. guarantees. a little bit of backing down but certainly a very concerning thing. we had a little sense of this earlier in the year. in january when president karzai came to washington his chief of staff said, the united states needs afghanistan more than afghanistan needs the united state

jennifer glass, al jazeera, new york. >> sunday, december 1st, marks tha.i.d.s. day. we've come a long way from the death sentence. many who are plagued by the disease now say they have reached the beginning of the end of a.i.d.s. in uganda the situation still remains dire. thank you so much for joining us, we appreciate it. now in uganda, the h.i.v. rates stay at 7.3%. that's up from 6.4%. why is it on the rise there while it's on the decline in so many other places? >> well, we've done a lot of work on h.i.v. a.i.d.s. as a nation, we've seen development partners help us see the cost of h.i.v. an a.i.d.s. go down to less than $150. but we still have rising numbers because 700 mothers every day deliver a child who is h.i.v. positive because they did not have access to treatment that could have prevented the virus of the mother to the baby. we have complacency in communities where people are using protection and increasing the number of sexual partners that they have. this is part of why the rate is going up. >> is this a matter of money? >> no, it's not a mart o matte
