zain is joining us, jennifer gray in the cnn severe weather center. zain, how bad is it where you are? >> reporter: jake, it's not as bad as i predicted earlier. the snow isn't coming down as heavily as predicted but sometime between now at 10:00 we're expecting 8 to 12 inches of snow. and then you add to that the windchill factor and it will feel below freezing and then the wind gusts, 35 miles an hour. so despite working over time, there is a chance that you could wake up and see almost a foot of snow. one thing i will tell you is that if you have a choice between taking a car and using mass transit, it really is all about mass transit. the long island railroad is putting out more trays and the mta as well, especially during rush hour. one thing i may say that mayor de blasio said, if you see a homeless person that needs help, please call. nobody should be outside in these conditions. margaret will have more on flight cancellations. margaret? >> reporter: zain, thank you very much. here at laguardia, 690 cancellations. that's more than double the ca

our own jennifer gray is live for us and tracking the storm in boston this morning. ou already got quite a bit of snow. good morning, jennifer. >> good morning to you. >> reporter: the snowplow behind me, they are out here and busy over the next 48 hours. you're right. it is already snowing in boston. this is pretty much phase one of the bigger picture. we are going tor tracking the storm for the next 36 to 48 hours. there is also a blizzard warning for the cape as well. so keep that in mind. there is your radar. we are seeing snow still in the midwest. we are seeing snow through chicago but you can see it does extend into the northeast. that little swath from upstate new york and it's heading through boston this morning but this is just the beginning as this storm continues to track to the northeast. we will continue to pick up snow. it will become heaviest late tonight and through tomorrow morning when we get the strong northeast winds so that is what the worry is. the blowing snow, the drifting snow could lead to whiteout conditions in boston and the surrounding ar

this is not just california. >> cnn meteorologist jennifer gray is here now. t. the winds are weakening, which is good news. that will help. this is the pattern we have been stuck in over the past couple of months. this ridge of high pressure, the jet stream, riding far to the north pulling all the rain that san francisco, los angeles and all of those folks should get. it is pushing it into the pacific northwest. so it is just missing southern and central california. that area of high pressure has just stayed in place. it has brought the strong santa ana winds and dry conditions. humidity levels have been in the single digits. those winds have been spawning all those fires. this is the time of year that california supposed to get rain. if we are not getting the rain now, in the next couple of months in the dry season, it will be very, very bad as far as the fires are concerned. as you look at the next three months, the forecast, it looks like we will still see above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall. that is unfortunate for folks in southern califor

jennifer gray stuck on the interstate for 12 hours. our other meteorologist stuck on the road. officials saying the weather forecast was wrong. that's inaccurate. our own meteorologists had been predicting this kind of weather for more than 24 hours. as you know, wolf, having spent time in atlanta, the resources here for a snow like this, a snow event like this, they're simply not there. wolf? >> looks like some serious miscoordination. nick, stand by. our colleague michael holmes, who never made it home last night, spent the night at the cnn center in atlanta, he's out on the roads right now. there's a little bit of sunshine, i take, it but still also gridlock, michael. i know our viewers have seen you covering wars. you recently got back from baghdad and iraq. what's it like in atlanta right now? >> reporter: yeah, i come from baghdad to this nightmare, wolf, you're right. yeah, we're out here on i-20, which is a major atlanta freeway. runs east/west just south of the city. just have a look there. it's been gridlock here since we got here. they seem to be funneling the trucks

here with that and details with the storm, jennifer gray in the weather center. who is getting hit the hardest now and how much more snow can we expect? >> well, we're seeing the hardest hit areas anywhere from d.c., new york and boston. i would say boston area is probably the hardest hit right now. d.c. saw more snow today than they normally see the entire month of january. if that puts it in perspective at all. but still snowing in d.c., baltimore, as we travel up 95. you can see philly, new york, still in the mix. and boston, you can see those brighter bands right there. that's continuing to push to the northeast with very gusty winds. you'll see the blowing snow and that will create blizzard-like conditions for a lot of areas. as far as snow totals, we're seeing anywhere from 8 to 10 inches of snow anywhere from philly to new york. some isolated amounts even higher. and some areas close to where chad myers is, could see more than a foot of snow. so as we continue to track this, hour by hour, you can see most of the big cities still affected. at the 10:00, 11:

let's begin with our jennifer gray over at the cnn severe weather center.give us the latest forecast. >> wolf, it could not be more messy for the evening commute when you have d.c., new york, and boston all covered in snow right now. the snow is continuing to come down. this is that light, fluffy snow and very strong winds over the next couple of hours and even during the overnight, you can expect visibility to be down less than a quarter of a mile in a lot of places. dangerous outside. d.c. is still getting the snow as we look at the radar. philly, new york as well. even boston getting in on the snow, as we speak. also, a blizzard warning for the cape and that begins at 7:00 this evening. let's take this storm hour by hour. you can see the evening commute, still snow in d.c., new york, and boston as of 11:00 this evening. it does push out of d.c., new york, and philly as we get into early tomorrow morning. however, areas like boston and the surrounding areas, that includes the cape, could see lingering snow showers as we go throughout the early hours of to

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray is here with more in the forecast. it's a mess. >> it is a mess.it's hard to believe windchills were below zero a couple of days ago in the south and now we're in the 60s. we had this line of showers and storms come through the southeast, through atlanta. we had tornado warnings in georgia, the florida panhandle, even south carolina. now things are starting to look a little better but we still have that threat for severe weather. all across the southeast and even the east coast. so we're going to be zooming in on no, new york, washington, and boston. definitely not cold enough for snow and a lot of you will welcome the rain considering it is much warmer across the northeast. here are the storm reports. hail and very gusty winds have been the main ones all across the south. that slight risk still remains for the southeast and east coast for damaging winds and isolated tornadoes through today. rainfall amounts anywhere from one to two inches. isolated amounts even more as we go through the rest of the day. look at the shot of atlanta. this is that st

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray is hoaere to tell us if they wi get any. >> it's been a tough go in californiaand it is going to continue to be very, very dry. i guess the only glimmer of hope is that the winds are starting to die down just a little bit. that will help firefighters. but this is basically the pattern over the last couple of months, that stubborn ridge of high pressure has kept all the rain out, it has brought in the strong santa ana winds and has definitely been a fuel for a lot of those fires. relative humidities have been down in the single digits, adding insult to injury there. we are going to see above average temperatures over the next couple days. we should be at 66 in l.a. but the next couple days, we'll be 10 to 15 degrees warmer than that. so it is going to stay warmer than normal and precipitation is going to stay below normal over the next several days, if not weeks. another story we're watching is out in the northern plains, the midwest. we're seeing a winter weather advisory anywhere from minneapolis and even south of chicago and look at this, even a blizzard warni
