let's check in with cnn's severe weather meteorologist jennifer gray. she's got the very latest. ve seen a very, very powerful cell push through lewisville, mississippi, and have gotten reports of it up to a mile wide at some times. a very powerful tornado. it's moving off to the north and east. places like crawford and even starkville need to be on the lookout for this. especially if you're on the south side. this is one of the latest tornado warnings that we've seen, and if we can get it up here, we'll show you that it's affecting these places like crawford, lewisville, you're on the backside of that. but as this storm continues, there we go, continues to push to the north and east, places like brooksville, lewisville, and that goes into effect until 5:30 central time. so, definitely be on the lookout for that. we're also going to see storms. if we zoom out just a little bit, you can see up to the north and east, we're also seeing some very powerful storms there. and we'll let you know exactly who. that tornado is in effect until 5:30 as well. monroe county. that's entering into

jennifer gray, maybe you can just weigh in on this. because, you know, there is nothing worst than bad weather on the horizon when you have all of that loose and dangerous debris. nails, shards. there's just so much that's dangerous. >> yeah, very, very quickly, can be picked up by the wind and they will be carried around. luckily, though, the good news is the storms won't be in arkansas for today and tonight. the storms are going to shift a little bit farther to the east. and so folks in mississippi, alabama, tennessee, really need to watch out with these warnings as we go through the afternoon and evening hours. right now, a tornado watch in effect until noon vcentral time. for about another hour. some of the stronger storms are up through portions of tennessee, along i-40, and you can see right outside of nashville, seeing some pretty nasty storms pull through there. no warnings out right now. we have that one tornado watch. ways going to happen is we will see those showers and storms sort of die down just a little bit. with the day

jennifer gray, thank you so much.370 could expire at any moment. british ship with advanced detection gear is in a an area where chinese detected pulse signals. as cnn reports some of this technology was never designed for this kind of search. >> it can descend 20,000 feet below the surface, detect this sound coming from the black boxes pinger from two nautical miles away but experts say deploying the towed cater is a big ask. >> we're asking a big ask. it was never designed to do this. >> physicians at phoenix international, the manufacturers of the pinger locater agree these conditions are far from ideal. to be most effective, it needs a starting appoint, a confirmed piece of wreckage from malaysia airlines 370. >> if they haven't found deb, is it pointless to use this? >> your question pointless is not a good description. it is very, very difficult if they have not found debris to even know where to start. >> pinger locater limitations, it's passive, michbs from the pinger. it doesn't send out signals to pick them

i want to go back right to jennifer gray at the cnn severe weather center. i know that more information is coming in and it isn't good. what's the latest, jennifer? >> yeah, this is a potentially deadly situation going on in northern alabama. we have a very strong storm that's pushing to the north and east. it is producing a possible very large tornado, and it's possibly on the ground as we speak. so if you're in the path of this storm, you need to get to your safe spot immediately. limestone and madison counties in northern alabama. athens and hazelgreen. look at the proximity to huntsville. this is just north of huntsville, alabama. this is a tornado emergency. it is 5:30 central time. and folks are probably wanting to get home from work. don't. stay put. this is very, very dangerous. this is a life or death situation going on here in northern alabama. so a tornado emergency. looks like there could be a very large tornado on the ground. we've been watching what we call velocity. the winds going toward and away from the radar. and this is continuing to track

we have some developing news we want to get to our meteorologist jennifer gray who is keeping an eyethis severe weather. i understand you talked to us about a tornado, correct? >> yeah, we have video of a tornado on the ground. in fact, we've been watching this video for the past little while. this is near baxter springs in southwest missouri, southeast kansas. a very powerful storm. storm chasers are out there getting video of this and they are out there as we speak. this video was rolled on about two or three minutes ago, so this is very, very fresh. if you are in the path of this storm, and it's moving at about 40 miles per hour to the northeast, of course, places that do need to be on the lookout include alva, baxter springs, even joplin, ohio under the threat of a possible tornado as we speak. we know that has been one place that has been hit in the past, the past couple of years. so a lot of people are going to be on the lookout for these storms. so these are very powerful. i want to zoom in on some of them to get a closer look. you see the town of asbury. there's joplin right

our meteorologist jennifer gray is closely following the system for us. ennifer, wow, look at that. that looks ominous. >> ominous-looking skies across all of the south, really, don. memphis and little rock we have pictures of out of little rock and these storms just to your west starting to move in, so this is going to be affecting millions of people as we go through its weekend, in fact, tornado watch boxes in effect across portions of arkansas and this does include little rock and in fact, it is considered a particularly dangerous situation from the storm prediction center and that doesn't happen very often. and so that means need to take these storms very seriously. we're starting to see some of these cells pop up and these are the ones that you really want to look out for. there's a tornado warning in effect right now for this one right here, we'll get some information for you, and it is in effect until about 5:00 central time. it's affecting 245 people, a rural area of oklahoma. we also have a severe thunderstorm warning in oklahoma as well, and that

jennifer gray is watching had line of storms. jennifer, the biggest risk right now, where?is basically southern oklahoma and north texas. doesn't look like a whole lot's going on right now, but i assure you, it has been heating up all day. we're starting to see some assu showers pop up. in a matter of hours these could be turning severe. that's what we'll watch over the next couple of days. all the ingredients are in place to produce severe weather in these powerful storms will march across the country today, tomorrow, monday, even into tuesday. and these are also going to be slow movers. so, we're going to talk about a possible flooding potential as well. the threat for today, anywhere from north texas all the way up through nebraska. we're talking about large hail and damaging winds. as we go into tomorrow, the severe threat ramps up quite a bit in the arklatex area, shreveport, little rock, memphis. we could see large tornadoes as we go through tomorrow into monday, the severe weather threat will still remain for the mississippi river valley. still including memphis, jac

jennifer gray is watching this potentially very destructive system. who gets it and who gets it first and when? >> don, it's basically just going to march across the country. today the severe threat in north texas and oklahoma and that stretches up through omaha. then on sunday, it moves more into the arklatex. mississippi river valley and on monday, even more to the east and that includes places like atlanta, birmingham, even nashville. so here is the setup. we are not seeing too much right now. in fact, it's been a pretty quiet day but the sun has been out all day. it's been heating the atmosphere up. we are starting to get some showers form. some light showers but today is not really the real threat. tomorrow is when we will really start to watch these closely, developing across the mississippi river valley. like we mentioned arklatex and also places like little rock and arkansas and missouri. watch out for these tomorrow and could be be a life-threatening situation and could see large tornadoes and large heail and damaging winds tomorrow and throu

our meteorologist jennifer gray is at the cnn severe weather center for us. u tell us, jennifer? >> wolf, it's been a really active day and we're going to see these thunderstorms continue to march to the east over the next couple hours. should be dying out 7:30, 8:00. you'll start to see them weakening. right now, anywhere raleigh and east, you need to be on the lookout for those showers and storms. in fact, we'll zoom in just a little bit. i'll get todd to advance my graphics for me. we've seen a couple producing tornadoes. actually in green county, we had video of that earlier. we also have tornado warnings in effect in north carolina. those are going to be pushing to the north and east. if you're in one of those bright pink boxes, you need to get into your lower interior room of your home and stay in your safe spot until the warning expires. we have seen golf-ball-sized hail with a lo of these storms, wolf. these are going to continue to be severe over the next hour or two. also in virginia, richmond area, we've seen very strong thunderstorms. these haven't

jennifer gray is in the cnn weather center. jennifer, we're starting to see activity percolate, right? >> yes. we're already watching this line continuing to push to the north and east. these are moving to the north and east at about 55 miles per hour. these are very fast moving storms. lexington, hardin, get into your safe spot in your house, low, interior room. these also have the capability of producing golf ball-size hail. a tornado warning for the next ten minutes or so. this is part of a larger system. you can see the showers and storms stretching as far south as springfield and it's going to continue to push towards the east. look at this, memphis, omaha, you're in it, too. we have a lot of upper level support and moisture coming in from the south, from the gulf of mexico that is going to fuel these storms over the next couple of hours. this is going to go into the late evening hours and into the overnight. the main bullseye is over little rock. we could see large hail, damaging winds and also tornados. like we have menti

cnn's jennifer gray. jennifer, what kind much weather conditions are there as they continue to take to the high seas to do these underwater searches? >> it's not terrible. but now that they're dragging these things on the ocean surface, you need to have really calm conditions. you don't want a lot of wobble with those ships. definitely have waves out there, but not going to see those nasty high seas like we saw when the search area was farther to the south. we're watching a tropical cyclone. it's a weak one. it was packing winds at 40 to 50 miles per hour. it's sliding down to the south and east. waves right around the center about 16 feet. so that's pretty high. once you get into where the search area actually is, the seas definitely die down a bit. also watching that rain pull to the south, we'll have some cloud cover on top of the area over the next 24 hours or so before things start to clear out just a bit. but the good news, fred, is it looks like the winds are going to be down just a bit as well. we'

jennifer gray has a look at the ridiculous forecast. >> christine and victor, all the rain we saw yesterdayng off the sea board should see a calmer day. the big story, this morning we could see record breaking cold temperatures for the morning, basically anywhere east of the mississippi. we are talking cities like boston, atlanta, pittsburgh, very cold morning. temperatures will end up in the 50s and upper 50s in atlanta. 55 in chicago. a little warmer today than yesterday and temperatures really nice across the deep south. we are going to see those temperatures drop again tonight. the cold weather sticking around. the temperatures in the 30s in the northeast. d.c. 35. 36 in new york. 33 in boston. chicago, you will bottom out around 41 tonight. tomorrow's forecast, we'll bring the sunshine into the southeast. high pressure in control across the northeast. not much happening across the country. we'll see a little bit of rain and snow in the pacific northwest and scattered showers developing across the whole country of texas. high temperatures tomorrow, warmer. gradually warming throughout t

jennifer gray is here in the cnn severe weather center with much more, so jennifer, we're also noticingin the south, some real changes along the way. >> yes, this stretches all the way up through portions of south dakota, all the way down to georgia. so this covers a large portion of the country, watching severe thunderstorm warnings, tornado warnings throughout the day for today. look at the long line of showers and storms stretching across the country. if we zoom in a little bit you can see the severe thunderstorm warnings and looks like a new tornado warning has just popped up just to the south of caesar rapids. these are moving very quickly, moving at about 55 miles per hour, producing very heavy rain and very large hail and so if you are in some of the areas where the severe thunderstorm warnings are and the tornado warnings, get into a small interior room in your home and stay there until the threat is over. we've been showing you storms up north but this is the main threat as we go through the late evening hours into the overnight hours, stretches anywhere from texarkana to littl

jennifer gray is watching the forecast, take a look. >> good morning john and poppy.he focus today will be on the planes. we could see severe weather from the texas panhandle up to nebraska. the possibility of damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes. that will be something we are looking for today. mostly sunny across the southeast. showers in northern new england. high pressure remains in place across the great lakes. it is still very warm across the south. a lot of warm air is going to fuel the storms later this afternoon. 87 degrees is the high temperature in dallas. 75 in memphis. temperatures stay in the 50s across the north. 62 in d.c. as we get into tomorrow, the strong storms start to push into the mississippi valley. the ohio valley will see sunny skies remain across the southeast and the northeast. the plains will clear out and start to see a little bit of rain push into the pacific northwest. as far as highs go tomorrow, we'll stay warm across the south. 70s and 80s from atlanta to new orleans and houston. temperatures in the 60s in d.c. and new york. j

let's go to jennifer gray. who is in danger right now? >> these storms are to the northeast of tupelo and a tornado warning is in effect. anyone to the northeast of tupelo, north of fulton, this tornado is reportedly on the ground and it's heading to the northeast at about 45 miles per hour. and i'll show you exactly what we're looking at. on the radar, we're looking at something called a debris field. a lot of times when you get very large tornadoes, the debris field will actually be picked up on radar. that's how you know this is a very dangerous situation. this is what we saw yesterday in arkansas so if you are just to the northeast of tupelo, you need to be very careful. that is the highest level that and it's a serious situation crossing into alabama. if you're in northwest alabama, you need to be on the lookout as well. they move quickly so you get the warning. they come and go and then they are off to the next town. a lot of times you have to stay ahead of it and that's what it is important with the fast-moving storms. >> jennifer,

jennifer gray's got that for us. >> unseasonably cool temperatures will remain in place for today.h of the east will rebound nicely for the afternoon, warming up little by little every day. we'll see a lot of sunshine across the south, breezy conditions, though, remain across much of the southeast, even some showers popping up into central portions of texas and even the oklahoma panhandle. we are going to see temperatures around 63 degrees in atlanta today, 70 in memphis, not bad in dallas, 69 degrees. actually warming up to the low to mid-50s across the northeast. lows tonight, though, will still be chilly, running in the mid-30s in the northeast, chicago at 41, 36 degrees in kansas city. by tomorrow, showers will continue to develop across the panhandle of florida and down through the peninsula. a lot of rain expected. breezy conditions across much of the country. we're going to see snow possibly in extreme portions of northern michigan. temperatures will be around 59 degrees tomorrow in d.c., 55 in new york. still trying to warm up a little bit in the south. really does do a hug

meteorologist jennifer gray at the cnn center in atlanta and jerry, a technical consultant for products safety and water rescue. first, andrew, i want to start with you. what is the latest on the search for these missing passengers? >> the latest on the search is as we speak the search is being resumed. it was halted for two or three hours in the hours of darkness. for reasons of which are unclear to us. they seem to be recalibrating the search. now they should be up and fully under way. under the light of parachute flairs so this will be happening right now in the cold waters where ship went down at 9:00 a.m. this morning. that's what 13, 14 hours ago. >> jennifer, we've been talking a lot about this, especially with the hunt for the missing plane. what can you tell us about the tides and the water temperatures in that area where this ship went down? >> the water is very cold. when the incident happened, they were approaching low tide and you have to really keep in mind that we're having a full moon, and so when you have a full moon, the tides are more dramatic than they are on a daily

jennifer gray in the cnn severe weather center. where is the dangerous weather? >> it's still developing and it doesn't look like a whole lot right now. as we get into the late evening hours into tonight, and especially into tomorrow, that is when the danger is going to come. . tonight through the wee hours of the morning it's basically north texas and southern oklahoma. you can see some showers starting to fire up just a little bit. the sun has been out all day. things have been heating up. instability is definitely in the atmosphere. we are also watching these storms fire up along that dry line so as we go forward in time, we are going to see these storms develop not only today but tomorrow, monday, and tuesday. that severe threat will remain across a large chunk of the country. basically, anywhere east of the rockies all the way through the carolinas. like you mentioned. what we are dealing with, the setup, very warm, moist air coming in from the gulf of mexico and warm and dry air moving in from the southwest and cooler air from the northwest. all of this com

let's go to jennifer gray in our severe weather center.f mississippi say he's been through katrina and that this is worse. >> yeah, the type of tornados that we're seeing today are very different than the type of tornados you see associated with hurricanes. these are extremely large. they are long-track tornados, and they can be deadly. this is exactly where he is, jackson, mississippi, here is that tornado warning affecting jackson and pearl. 250,000 people in the path of this one particular storm, and we've been tracking many of these throughout the day. this is in effect until 7:15 p.m. i want to show you a wider view, though, so you can get a handle on what we're dealing with when we're talking about these tornado warnings. look at them. you can see just all these hot pink boxes. anywhere from western alabama all the way through jackson and through the south. this line of storms. also seeing a tornado warning in southern tennessee and i do also want to mention one more thing. we are seeing a tornado warning just on the southwest side o

. >> incredible pictures, let's talk to jennifer gray and chad myers in alabama.r, with the tornado warnings and watches, what do we know? >> right now we have storms still in effect. the ones in mississippi and alabama expire at 9:00 p.m. central time, actually the stormings in north carolina have been the most powerful throughout much of the afternoon, where the focus yesterday was more on mississippi, alabama, we had a couple of tornado warnings just in the past hour, the most recent one expired just about a minute or two ago. you can see just to the south of 95, a lot of powerful storms creating gusty winds, large hail and a couple of reports of actual tornadoes, brief spin-ups there in north carolina. i want to focus now on the south, because we're seeing thunderstorm development across mississippi and alabama, granted, nothing compared to what we saw yesterday. one of the limiting factors, though, we have been dealing with a lot of coastal showers right along the gulf of mexico and the florida panhandle. that has been one thing that has limited that moisture

cnn's jennifer gray in our severe weather center. ocean where these sounds were detected? >> it is very, very deep. some areas 14,000 feet or even more. let's start on the surface and the area that they're searching is 83,000 square miles, roughly the size of utah. i'll show you these depths and show you some of these features underwater. keep in mind, so little we know about the indian ocean and we don't know exactly where it is. these could be off a little bit, but i just want to show you some of the features that we are going to be dealing with. we do know a broken ridge and a plateau in the areas they're searching. take you under the water now and some areas 16,400 feet where that ping is detected. estimated to be about 14,000 feet below the surface. some of the deepest amounts up to 20,000 feet and then you have the plateau that raises up to about 10,000 feet. so, these are very, very deep features. i also want to put this in perspective for you. this is incredible. we picked some of the tallest structures in the world and look a

jennifer gray has more. >> this is a dangerous storm.ery close to the university of alabama, went right over cottondale. we have reports of damage there. it is following this line along i-20. a very dangerous storm. this is tuscaloosa county. you need to be on the look out for this. we have another very dangerous storm right outside of birmingham. just to the north and east of this particular storm we have another one. it is on its heels. it is going to cross over 635. the sirens have been going off in birmingham over the last hour or so. a very dangerous situation there. we have possibly two, maybe three confirmed tornados on the ground between tuscaloosa and just to the north of birmingham. this is also an area we need to watch closely around gardendale. we have reports of tornados on the ground heading in your direction. so a very, very volatile situation right here. it is going to be fluid for the next couple hours. tornado warnings from south of huntsville south of tuscaloosa. if you are on the south side of tuscaloosa all the way u

let's go to the cnn severe weather center, our meteorologist, jennifer gray, has the latest informationer? >> well, we still have that tornado warning in effect for north carolina. surprisingly, that's where a lot of the energy has been this afternoon. it's been in north carolina, which wasn't even in that moderate zone, but still under the risk of thunderstorms for the entire east coast. edgecomb county under this tornado warning until 6:45, including the city of princeville. so if you're in the path of this storm, seek shelter immediately. this has been a very powerful line of storms in north carolina, but as the evening goes on, wolf, i really believe most of the energy, just as chad said, will be focused in the south, mainly into those portions of central alabama. we've had some severe thunderstorms in portions of mississippi, alabama, and even the florida panhandle, and, unfortunately, a lot of areas that were hit hard yesterday could see this same situation for today. maybe not quite as large of tornados, but we still could see severe weather in those areas. and when you get winds

jennifer gray, kind of got that -- messed it up a little bit.tting much of the country today. what's going to hit first and how hard? >> this is an ugly one. we really haven't seen much severe weather this season. so it is beginning this weekend. sort of kicking off the season. today, we're looking at an area mainly north texas, southern oklahoma. it does stretch all the way up into portions of nebraska. tomorrow marches on to the mississippi river valley and then on monday, it will be heading to the east coast. including places like atlanta. so, this will be a multi-day event. right now, not much on the radar. we are seeing a couple of showers in the rockies. right where that severe weather threat is, not seeing much. the sun is out. things are heating up. in the next couple of hours, we do plan on those showers and storms to start to fire up right along that dry line. so, high pressure is going to scoot off to the east. we have this upper level low. we have the dry line that's going to be approaching. in the coming days, we'll see the showers

let me bring in jennifer gray. 5% to search. >> the main reason is the topography is more challenging. you have divots in the ocean floor and so the blue fin is going to go around those. and it's really challenging because these are not realtime images. you're not going to know until it gets back on the ship. it's going to be quite the delay. one good thing is to see that this area is a little bit shallower. we have been searching 75,000 feet. >> that's good. that's interesting seeing that graphic and how that may happen. and experts are seeing that this could continue expanding. how big of an expansion could we be talking here? >> we have been talking about the little pings and we have been searching a six mile radius. it's about 120 square miles and that's taken what? about a week and a half? if we make up for all of this area that we have missed in between you're looking at roughly the size of los angeles. that's 484 square miles and at the rate that the blue fin is going, you're looking at anywhere from 47 to 5

our meteorologist jennifer gray is tracking all of this for us from our severe weather center. let's start with the flooding. what's behind all of this? >> yeah. we've had this system that has been so slow moving. just like chad was saying, it's caused these storms to train or just follow one after another. and it has just produced incredible amounts of rain. he was mentioning he was hearing thunder. we do have some showers just offshore. that pensacola area. most of the showers will go to the east, but they are calling for isolated showers over the next 24 hours. so that is not good news at all. of course, we're not planning on anything like we saw in the wee hours of today. look at that. more than 10 inches of rain. that blob of white right over pensacola, that was just in that short amount of time, and this is the river stage. you can see 10 feet and then in less than six hour, jumping up to more than 23 feet. that's incredible. water can rise very quickly with little or no notice. and so that's why more people die in flash flooding than anything else. more than hurricanes,
