. >>> hi, i'm meteorologist jennifer gray with a quick tropical update.ve a major category four storm. this is hurricane odile. winds at 130 miles per hour. gusts up to 160. the storm is moving to the northwest at about 14 miles per hour. you can see on the current path impacting cabo san lucas in the next 24 hours. you can imagine this could make landfall as a category four storm. this will be the biggest hurricane that this area has ever seen. we could see devastating impacts as far as rain goes and as far as we understand goes for the peninsula. this is going to continue to track to the northwest. beyond that weakening considerably, but little going to slow down quite a bit. that moisture is still going to be sticking around. it's also going to be pumping a lot of moisture into the four corners. we could see the desert southwest and see a repeat of all that flooding we saw last week. something to watch especially if you have. >> all right, jennifer gray. thanks so much for us there. >>> now how the nfl is handling players accused of domestic violence a

jennifer gray joins us for more. jennifer, what is it? >> sounds scarier than it is. yeah. was a threat that we could see shortage in some of the power grids or gps devices getting thrown off. we haven't seen reports of that. one thing that has been cool are the northern lights. some amazing pictures. you may be able to see it for one more night. it's reaching a lot farther south than normal. so we've seen folks in new hampshire seeing this, even as far south as northern illinois, was supposed to see it. haven't seen pictures out of there. we've seen incredible pictures. in other news of course, weather news, we're seeing a really cool shot of air in the north and the northeast. so that's going to be the weather story. chilly in the north and then very hot out west. so we're going to see cold temperatures. there are frost freeze advisories and warnings in place as we speak this morning. incredible. folks waking up in the northern plains in the 30s and 40s. it's incredible. 39 degrees in minneapolis right now. we're only going to warm up to the mid-50s in that part of the co

our jennifer gray reports. >> reporter: it could be a desperate race between time and mother nature. near the kilauea volcano on hawaii's big island are keeping a close eye on this a slow moving lava floe northeast of the come rain is know. within a mile of their neighborhood and the lava threatens to destroy their homes and close off the highway. the main escape route out of the danger zone. there's been no evacuation ordered yet, but officials are telling people to be prepared. >> our job is just to make sure that should the lava cross 130, wither prepared with alternate access routes and number two, as we have to evacuate, that people are evacuated as safely and orderly as possible. >> reporter: lava from an opening in the volcano came flowing out on june 27th and has been creeping across a heavily wooded area, but predicting where it will go next is proving difficult. >> it depends on the rate of speed that the floe actually moves and how close it is to the subdivision. as we've seen over the history of this eruption, it has had spurts as well as significant stalls. >> it's diffi

i want to check in with jennifer gray right now. jennifer, give us a sense of the bigger picture. kind of the scene from above. >> this is huge. this is impacting a lot of people across the entire country. and one thing just to update you on, we just found out, john, the ground stop has been extended for one more hour so best case scenario the ground stop could be lifted by noon eastern time, of course, that could be updated closer to noon and extended farther out. so one thing to note it looks like for at least another hour the planes will be on the ground. this is o'hare and you can see major, major delays. this is flightaware's misery map. not only affecting o'hare and midway, you have these planes that can't get on the ground to turn around and go to other cities. so you have places like denver, san francisco, l.a.x., dallas, atlanta, houston and d.c. among other cities feeling the delays. so people sitting in airports across the country and cannot get out. you have seen a thousand delays with midway and o'hare with planes coming in and going out so far this morning. a thousan

jennifer gray, i'm wondering, how bad is the flooding potential?we've already seen so much rain in central texas and also west texas, portions of new mexico and arizona. another day of this is what we're going to see, but the good news is it should be wrapping up after today. central, texas will stay pretty dry today. 2 to 3 inches in carlsbad, then north of el pass ocean 3 to 6 ifrms. more of this flooding. so be on the lookout for that. one other thing i want to mention, we do have the possibility for a couple of severe storms today including chicago, grand rapids, milwaukee, not really a tornado threat here but damaging winds and large hail. that's something we'll be watching for for today. another chilly morning across the northeast. 59 in new york. we're seeing temperatures at 54 in albany and portions of vermont and new hampshire. we did have frost advisories in effect. those have since gone away. warmer air will be pushing into the northeast. >> nice mix, jennifer gray. >> this nfl story just seems to keep swirling and swirling, doesn't it?

jennifer gray? >> yeah.orm system pushing into the northeast, going to lose a little punch by the time it gets to the northeast. a dreary start. central park. can barely see it on the tower cam. new york city, may be hard to get out of bed for you folks in the city this morning, but severe tomorrows possible a little later this afternoon. let's look at what happened in portions of michigan yesterday. even went into portions of illinois. all of those power outages. martin just talked about. it could take days for power to get restored. we had about 2,000 power lines knocked down, so folks could be without power for quite some time. here's a little storm damage in illinois sent in. michael brighton, this is arlington heights in illinois. look at those trees on the house and so a dangerous situation across the midwest yesterday. likely said, though, this is going to track to the northeast. these are all the storm reports we saw yesterday. wind and hail, 152 wind reports. 8 hail reports, 365,000 customers still

jennifer gray has more. good morning, jennifer. >> good morning. a lot of rain across the northeast. even a tornado confirmed, ef-0 in massachusetts. more severe weather for today. we are going to look at the midwest. chicago, indianapolis, detroit, st. louis, springfield, kansas city, all under the threat of damaging winds, large hail. the slight possibility of an isolated tornado. we are watching for that this afternoon. we have a lot of moisture from the gulf of mexico. pop-up showers along the gulf coast. that will be pushing to the east as we go through the next couple days. new york gets a break. possibly more rain on the way tomorrow. something else to watch. in the meantime, you are looking at rainfall totals through tuesday. about an inch or so across the ohio valley. higher amounts around springfield, st. louis. we are going to see the unsettled weather stay in the midwest and travel to the east. in the meantime, hot weather remains across the gulf coast and the southeast. we are going to see temperatures staying well above normal. 92 in

jennifer gray with us now. i mean, it really is noticeably dry.uch i felt so dehydrated all the time, let alone looking at the landscape. >> you're exactly right. it is really, really dry. and it's going to take much, much more than just a couple of days of rain to reverse this. this is a look at the king fire from space. nasa provided these images. and you can see the smoke just billowing up to the north and east. like dan said, 76,000 acres have burned. 4500 firefighters fighting this. 21,000 homes threatened. and smoke plume stretches over 250 miles. just incredible images. fredericka, you're right, that drought is not going anywhere any time soon. not improving. 95% of the state in severe drought. 82% in exceptional drought. and here is the forecast over the next couple of days. nothing more than about a 10% chance of rain. temperatures in the mid-80s, low 90s. so firefighters in extreme heat battling these blazes. i want to switch gears because in west texas, we're seeing the very opposite thing. we are seeing a lot of rain in west texas. flo

jennifer gray joins us now with more from the severe weather center.ona and we are continuing to see it this morning. we have lightning strikes, also severe thunderstorm watches in effect for those areas. and this is going to stretch all the way up to salt lake city. so much rain has fallen in this area over the last month or two, any additional rain is going to be a problem. so be careful. that moisture from the gulf of california pulling in, combining with a cold front, it's going to produce a slight risk of severe storms as we go through the afternoon today, so just be on the lookout. we also have a flooding threat right there, flash flood watches and warnings already in effect. what are we going to expect through today and tomorrow? we could see an additional 1 to 3 inches, just to the north of phoenix. we could see 1 to 3 inches on the south side of grand junction and also 2 to 4 inches in salt lake city. i want to mention, though, northern california received quite a bit of rain yesterday. napa, 4 to 6 inches of rain received yesterday and even s
