outlining will the icy weather last, jennifer gray has an "early start" on your forecast.> hi, guys. yeah, fortunately, the snow, the ice on the ground not going anywhere anytime soon because in some places temperatures going to stay below freezing for over a week so this is going to stick around. we're seeing very cold temperatures this morning. single digits in denver. 3 degrees your actual temperature. zero in billings, and 7 below in cheyenne. what it feels like outside -- it feels like 14 degrees below zero in denver. 46 below in kansas city. feels like 8 degrees in chicago. feeling like 21 for you. look at these temperature departures. denver, your high temperature today, 5 degrees. 15 degrees below normal. minneapolis, 15 degrees below normal. we start to moderate but still cold. the cold air will continue to push to the south and eventually spill into the eastern cities as we go to the end of the week. new york city will be at 45 on friday. that's 11 degrees below normal. and st. louis will be in the mid-30. all that we're looking at as far as snowfall, lake-effect

cnn's jennifer gray has more. she is in buffalo this morning. >> reporter: christine, welcome to south buffalo. this is lake-effect snow in full force. you can see the blowing snow. snow is coming down, sometimes at 2 inches per hour. there are areas around buffalo that have received almost 50 inches of snow. another 2 feet possible tomorrow. by the time this is said and done, low-end estimates could be 70 inches. in just look at this. cars over here, completely bury we passed cars left and right that were completely stuck. and look how powdery this is. when you just get in it and it's so fluffry. we're estimating this is a ratio of 15 to 20 to 1. that means you take 15 to 20 inches of this snow, you melt it down and it qualls 1 inch of water. so this is very, very powdery. the plows have been out here all day, though. the driving is just stretchers, though. it's very dangerous out here. most folks are just staying at home which is a good idea. we are going to get another round of this thursday into thursday night

jennifer gray joins us now from laguardia. jennifer, what do we think? flight delays, is the worst over? >> reporter: well, hopefully they'll be over in the next couple of hours. we have seen about 300 delays, 150 cancellations here at laguardia alone. look at the board behind me. it looks like flights are starting to catch up a little bit. we have seen all reds and all yellows at certain points on that board, but now we're seeing three and four-hour delays. but it looks like folks are now starting to get in. nationwide, 4,000 delays today. 700 cancellations. the biggest airports affected, of course, the ones around new york city, d.c., philly, and boston. of course, they are going to probably play catch-up, as we get into the morning hours tomorrow, but the good news is, john, it looks like they are still operating flights very late, wee into the morning hours. some of those flights don't even get here until well after midnight. >> that's after the bars close in the airports too, which could be a real problem. >>> coming up, he assisted in one of the au

let's go to jennifer gray.at these temperatures are going to warm up. how quickly are they going to do so? >> temperatures are going to warm up into the 40s today, still in the 40s tomorrow and then in the 50s close to 60 degrees by monday. this will be a gradual warm, we should have a lot of cloud cover out there for the next couple days, but the rain is coming. that's what is a concern because when you add that extra water weight and the snow hasn't melted all the way, it's going to add more weight to the roofs like we were talking about. so, i want to talk more, too, about the south. we do have an immediate threat for today and tomorrow for the gulf coast. we could see a large hail, damaging wind, an isolated tornado, that's south texas through new orleans including the hill country of texas. then the gulf coast tomorrow from new orleans all the way to pensacola, a possible severe threat as well. so those storms will make their way up the coast and in fact, it's part of the same system that will impact buffa

we should check in with cnn meteorologist jennifer gray toughing it out in buffalo. drew cuomo called this a major historic event. i'm sure you will agree and people there will as well. >> reporter: i think everybody would agree with that. we've been speaking with people that have lived here their entire lives and they say they have never seen this much snow in that short amount of time. people are comparing it to blizzard of '77. it's a big deal here in buffalo. it's been serious. people have been stranded. they've had to ask for volunteers to pitch in their snowmobiles to get people out of their cars and get people help and so it has been a major event here. look over here. i'll show you the scene. we've had bulldozers and plows just plowing all of this snow up against these corner streets and they are filling them with big huge trucks and hauling it off. this area is near a firestation and sop they want this area clear in case people need their help later. we've had trucks nonstop, huge trucks about 10 or 15 of them just in the past hour filled with snow and take i

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray explains. >> reporter: remember this?2013, 2014 is one many want to forget. reporters standing in the frozen tundra. >> let's go. >> kind of worked. >> reporter: while much of the nation was bundled and digging out for months, it was also the season of new hashtags, snowjam 2014 in atlanta, snowpocalypse and snowmageddon. but the one trending term that may have a cringing grip on you as much as the cold, polar vortex. we heard it over and over last winter as if it was something new. now that we've all had a chance to thaw out a bit, let's set the record straight on what it is and what it isn't. it's not a storm, it's not a hurricane of cold air, it's not even something that can come and get you. the only way to be in the polar vortex is to be in an airplane. it exists in the upper levels of 9 atmosphere and always there. area of low pressure around the arctic circle locked in place and houses very cold air. sometimes different weather patterns can influence it and cause it to become distorted as this happens, a large dip

i want to bring in meteorologist jennifer gray. when you look at the snowfall totals, it is almost like a misprint. i can't believe how much snow is there and more is coming. >> reporter: you are exactly right. they are seeing totals they get for the entire year. you are seeing it in a 24-to-48 hour period. you are exactly right. people from here are saying we have never seen anything like this. people lived here their entire lives through the blizzard of '77. when we drove in about an hour and a half ago, you could see absolutely nothing. visibility was zero. that's what these lake-effect showers can do. right now, the snow has let up just a little bit, but it is still very cold and very windy. so we're going to get a lot of blowing snow as well. look at the dump trucks. you remember him talking about how they are putting it -- bulldozers. putting it in the dump trucks. this is a staging area. the guys are slowly trickling in. they will get in the bulldozers and start to take the snow and haul it off again for today. look at this.

jennifer gray has been climbing snow mounds all day. jennifer, what's the story where you are? >> reporter: you know, jake, martin was talking about moving this snow out. these bulldozers have been pushing the snow on to the corners of streets and then putting it into big dump trucks and taking it off and when you push that snow, 40, 50, 60 inches of snow into the corner of a street, this is what you get. we are standing on top of a mound that is probably 13 feet high and you have these all over the city. the problem now is, though, it's a race against time. we only have about 45 minutes of daylight left and the snow has just started to come down again in the last hour. this isn't even the main event. the lake-effect snow will set up later tonight and it will run through friday morning. we could possibly see two to three additional feet of snow and so that is going to mean even bigger problems for the folks here in buffalo. we were talking to locals all day and they say never in their entire lives have seen this much snow in this amount of time. the lake-effect snow in effect t

meteorologist jennifer gray is braving it in buffalo with the latest. jennifer? >> overnight more record-shattering lake-effect snow paralyzing parts of western new york. buffalo now in a state of emergency. as the governor deploys the national guard for help. >> this is a very serious storm. >> you have to six feet of snow and climbing. first responders carrying patients to the hospital on foot. the snow so deep in some places snowmobiles can't operate. >> it's probably heavier than anything we've seen in 40 years. >> from the sky, a wall of white. on the ground -- >> that's the garage door. >> the snow is piling so high, so fast, it comes crashing into this home. >> it's horrendous, we're going to make history. >> the snowfall up to five inches an hour, crippling emergency personnel. at a firehouse in the heart of a storm, a mother delivers her baby girl. >> we couldn't get her to the hospital. she was born, she's safe and she's healthy. >> near buffalo, an 81-year-old man died after first responders were unable to get him to the hospital in time. the man, one

cnn's meteorologist jennifer gray has the cold, hard facts. ttle bit early to be this cold out, jennifer? >> it is very early, pamela. and just when you expect for this to melt in a couple daysings forget about it. temperatures are going to stay well below freezing in a lot of areas for the next several days, at least. casper, wyoming, their low temperatures this morning so far, 25 below zero. feeling even colder. denver low temperature this morning one degree below zero. denver, i'm feeling for you. look at that, your high temperature today, five degrees. that's about 40 to 50 degrees below normal in some of these areas. let's switch back to the map, i'll show you these current temperatures and some of these areas are still falling. temperatures 11 below zero in cheyenne, minneapolis at 18. when you factor in the windchill, it feels like 19 below zero in denver, feeling like 18 in chicago and this cold weather is not going anywhere any time soon. five degrees in denver your high temperature, 49 below normal. 17 below normal in minneapolis. as

meteorologist jennifer gray is at laguardia airport for us. rosa flores is on the massachusetts turnpike. jennifer, starting with you, what's the latest on flights right now? >> reporter: well, looks like flights are starting to be canceled left and right. we had a little bit of a slowdown this morning. the problem was the inbound flights couldn't get here because of a low ceiling. so clouds were very low. so it's starting to have that domino effect. look on the wall behind me. you can see a little bit more red on the wall. so flights are being canceled. we're also seeing a lot more delays. in fact, flight aware is reporting over 500 flights delayed within the past three hours and about 22 cancellations. do expect that number to increase. of course, laguardia and newark both expecting about 10% of their flights to be canceled for today. and those snowplows are ready. we are seeing a wintry mix in new york right now. we had snow earlier. the snow/rain line very close to the city. we expect for snow as the afternoon goes on. but the airport says

jennifer gray is in buffalo. chad myers has the warm studio and the dry conditions. jennifer, by virtue of the fact that you are suffering through this along with so many people where you are, let's start with you. tell me a little bit about the conditions there. we're hearing about firefighters who are having to use front-end loaders to try to rescue people. we're hearing about people who were trapped in cars and then of course this tragic news off the top of the show that six people have now died because of this we are. >> reporter: yeah, this has been really serious, ashleigh. we've been talking about fire trucks haven't been able to get out to rescue people. even the snowmobiles are getting stuck. so anyone with a snowmobile, anyone who can get out and help has been pitching in. we've talked to just citizens of buffalo that have been going back and forth all morning long. and they have been trying to help, trying to do what they can. that's really what we're seeing all around the city because it's such a serious situation. anybody that can offer anything has been

our meteorologist jennifer gray is at new york's laguardia airport. brian todd is traveling up i-95, one of the nation's busiest corridors from here in washington, d.c. up to new york city. he's now on the new jersey turnpike. brian, let's start with you. how's the weather affecting traffic on i-95? >> reporter: wolf, on the turnpike, we cannot say it's too bad right now because it's -- there are no major back-ups here on the turnpike, despite some pretty nasty weather. this i-95, the turnpike, this is the demarcation line. everything east of here is rain. west is snow. it's mostly rain on the turnpike. aaa says nearly 50 million americans are going to travel more than 50 miles from home on this thanksgiving holiday. 90% of them are going by car. we can see if we can show you out the front of our vehicle here and show you some of the rain we're up against. again, the traffic is moving pretty well. we talked to state officials in new jersey, delaware and maryland. they've told us they've been warning people for the past several days, leave for your des

jennifer gray is in the weather center with a look at the race and the conditions the runners will encounter how about it? >> yes, it is cold but the runners will be warmer than the folks watching it because temperatures feel like 32 right now. here's a live look at the south identify of central park, runners will be running through there in the next couple of hours, and so as we get ready for the marathon, temperatures are starting out chilly but winds are having an impact, 10-mile-per-hour winds with gusts at 22. earlier this morning we were picking up gusts higher than 30 and so you know that does make an impact when you are trying to run so temperatures right now, 42 degrees in new york city, when you factor in that windchill, it feels like 36. so warming up just a tad, it was feeling like 32 just about an hour or two ago. so we are trying to warm things up a little bit. we are going to have quite a bit of earthquake so don't expect that temperature to warm up very much, but definitely chilly, guys, for those runners. i'm sure they'll warm up quickly once they get going. we'll be right b

meteorologist jennifer gray has all the details. hi, jennifer. >> pamela, we had some very, very cold arctic air that is sinking down into much of the country as we go through the beginning part of the week. we're talking 200 million people affected by this. we are going to see temperatures well below normal anywhere from the dakotas all the way down to georgia. folks in the south will experience temperatures five to ten, maybe 15 degrees below normal. when we talk about the northern plains in the midwest, we're going to be talking about temperatures up to 35 degrees below normal. in fact, today already we have winter storm watches and warnings in place. we have winter weather advisories that stretch across seven states, and we could see as much as a foot of snow in minneapolis, so that's going to be the hardest hit area right around minneapolis on into portions of wisconsin. we also could see anywhere from six to nine inches of snow in the dakotas. this is basically going to be where the snow is concentrated. anywhere south of this,

jennifer gray back in from the chill outside, warming up the studio here. you're exactly right. we've been holding on to this for about a week now, and it could extend for an entire week or more, and still seeing temperatures well below normal. in the southeast, temperatures running about 15 degrees below normal. but in the midwest and the northern plains, we're seeing temperatures 30 and 40 degrees below normal. so very, very chilly. and look, the snow coming down, omaha, coming down at a pretty good rate. also, minneapolis seeing the snow. we have video right now, live of minneapolis. look at that. that has been one of the hardest hit areas, fred, with temperatures below freezing since monday and we could see temperatures stay below freezing for yet another week or more. so, minneapolis, we're feeling for you right now, because it is brutal right there. and let me show you what's going to happen over the next couple of days. chicago will get into that snow. it is going to push to the northeast, fred, but we are going to see another blast of cold air that'

let's start with cnn meteorologist jennifer gray live at laguardia airport. ifer, a lot of frustrated travelers there watching the cnn airport stream, i would think, right now. >> reporter: oh, you bet. the day before thanksgiving, the busiest travel day of the year and it's fitting that we have a snowstorm. it seems like we have this almost every year. some sort of trouble. look at the board behind me and you can see the reds and yellows and that is bad news, and we have seen those numbers grow throughout the day. it started out with just a couple this morning and now we're seeing about 3,000 delays today, folks delayed up to three hours or more and 600 cancellations and those are flights into the united states and out of the united states and within the u.s. of course, the weather outside here at new york, not all that bad, but this morning we have low clouds. it stopped a lot of those planes from coming in and it made a lot of them late and it's created a ripple effect and you see the snow across portions of the northeast and it's slowing folks down left an

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray is standing in the elements and it looks so cold. >> it is cold. temperatures in the teens and it feels like the single digits. we are not in blizzard-like conditions as we were earlier this morning. the sun is out and it's not going to help much because temperatures are not going to get above freezing. all that you see here is going to stay right here. this bulldozer is taking the snow and pushing it and making these huge piles you can see. we have one right here. they are as high as the street sign. once they pile it up, there is nowhere for it to go. they are filling it up in the dump trucks and carrying it off elsewhere to get it out of the street so they can manage this until the next wave comes. that's going to happen later tonight through tomorrow. we are in a little bit of a break. the band is to the north. you know this has proven deadly. we saw a man who has been helping people in stranded cars all night. he wanted to get back to the votes. there still people trapped in their cars and it is a mess. take a look at this. paralyzing parts of

jennifer gray is at the cnn center in atlanta. good morning. >> good morning to you, carol. buffalo area just can't catch a break, can they? we are looking at more snow showers pushing into the great lakes areas as we go through the next couple of days but that's really going to be the only hangup in the northeast. we have cold air still in place, high pressure in control across the southeast, it is sunny across the rockies but that's going to change even as we go through the next couple of days. current temperatures very cold in the northern plains, 13 degrees in minneapolis, 22 in chicago. we'll warm up to only 35 degrees in chicago this afternoon, temperatures cold across the northeast, 49 in atlanta, but a nice warmup in store for the south and the northeast, over the next couple of days, new york city will be close to 60 degrees by monday, atlanta close to 70 on monday, however we stay very cold still in the midwest and the northern plains. i want to mention the west, though, because we have some big time rains coming in to portions of california, and oregon. we also ha

jennifer gray has your holiday forecast. >> fred, this is a huge travel week for a lot of folks. rolling into thanksgiving. we have the macy's parade on thanksgiving day, and we could see snow for the northeast. the models still aren't agreeing 100%, so there's basically two scenarios we're looking at. this is the more aggressive scenario where you have the low tracking a little bit closer to shore. we are going to see the possibility of snow late wednesday and early thursday. could have a big impact on travel. folks trying to get in and out of major cities. we will have a clearer picture, and that's why you should stay tuned if you are traveling across the northeast. in time for thanksgiving. meanwhile, other folks across the country, your travel forecast. we are going to see a little bit of rain in atlanta on wednesday. 52 degrees. 81 and sunny in los angeles. seattle could be picking up some rain at 52. may or may not see some showers or snow showers across the northeast. that is yet to be determined. then we are going to see thursday looking all right. atlanta, you clear out.

let's get to meteorologist jennifer gray live on the ground in buffalo. ill almost too difficult for the first responders to get where they need to be. what are you seeing on the ground, jennifer? >> yeah, it's exactly right. we almost couldn't make it to the live shot a couple of hours ago the snow was so heavy. visibility was down to zero. you couldn't see in front of your hood. so first responders are having a very difficult time getting to people and now with the additional snowfall that's expected, the fear is with the weight added on people's homes, roofs could possibly collapse. and so that's going to be the fear moving forward. we're at a staging area, we had those front-end loaders we were showing you yesterday morning that were putting the snow in the dump trucks and hauling it off, this is where they were set up. if you follow me over here you can see, this parking lot has been plowed, but over here, this hasn't. this is what many streets look like south of buffalo. and the snow even higher. buffalo's deadly monster storm isn't done yet. the lak

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray in the weather center. it is officially winter.rr is the word of the day and much needed rain and snowfall for california. folks on that side of the country are cheering. folks on the east side of the country maybe saying something a little different because we are cold. we saw snow, we saw ice. some areas several inches. in fact, earliest snowfall on record in portions of south carolina. and now we're just left with mainly that cold rain. and it is also very windy out there. we are also seeing temperatures around 48 degrees in memphis. 45 in atlanta. 43 in chicago. when you factor in the windchill, this is what it feels like outside. 37 in atlanta is what it feels like. chicago feels like 33. cincinnati feels like the upper 20s. and the good thing is, we are going to warm up just a little bit over the next couple of days. temperatures slightly warmer tomorrow in chicago. you'll be at 61 by monday. atlanta, we'll already be at 66 by monday. so we're going to be chilly today and tomorrow. and then things get a little bit better as w

let's turn to cnn meteorologist jennifer gray. >>> fred, that very cold air is going to continue as wecoming week. some areas have below freezing for a week solid. we could see temperatures stay below freezing for another weak. some cities, yes, on about a two-week spread of temperatures below freezing. so we expect snow from chicago all the way down to the texas panhandle, possibly, and that's going to push to the east and you notice a lot of rain into south and southeast will continue to push into the northeast tomorrow and then lake effect snow will continue all the way through tuesday. we've gotten quite a bit of snow across the great lakes area. some folks already reaching what they normally should see in november. a long way to go here. look at this. all these winter weather advisories. from cleveland down to albut n albuquerq albuquerque. another cluster through minneapolis, the dakotas included as well. temperatures dipping quickly once the sun goes down. look at these impressive snowfall totals. we go through sunday, through tuesday, also 8-10 across portion it is of michigan,

jennifer gray is deep in the buffalo snow. indra petersons is tracking the storm for us but let's head to mark poloncaras. welcome, sir. >> good morning, carol. >> is this one of the hardest days of year career? >> it's been a hard last 36 hours, actually longer than that. 48 hours. at one point i was up 36 hours straight. it has been the worst storm we've ever seen. as i said yesterday, the storm was like a knife that was cut right into the heart of erie county. it blocked off every one of our north/south routes, including the new york state throughway and major department of transportation routes, the 400 as well as the 219. every one of the county roads that is a major north/south had blockage on it and what we're telling folks is stay home, there's nowhere you can go. thankfully we have a respite right now. it's sunny out in the areas that were directly impacted and the snow band moved north to the areas that had no snow so it's giving us an opportunity to go out there and clean up the roads. we are getting major roads cle

meteorologist jennifer gray, chad myers on top of it now. we begin with jennifer standing on the ground and in a lot of snow in buffalo. jennifer? >> reporter: yeah, don. that's right. this snowstorm came fast and it was coming down very, very hard. that lake-effect snow where you get the snow showers just going over the same spots over and over and over. so when you get snow dumped on one area that equals 40, 50 inches of snow, this is what you get. there's nowhere to put it. bulldozers and plows have been shoving it on the sides of streets and we're standing on top of about a 13-foot snow pile and you see these all over the city on the corners. we heard that 5,000 tons of snow has been removed from the city because they are loading all this snow into dump trucks and hauling it off. the reason is another wave is coming tonight. you have to manage this snow and put it somewhere before the next round comes. we could see an additional two to three feet of snow. i want to show you the scene here. we'll pan around and you can just check it out. y
