jennifer gray is in boston this morning. hi jennifer. >> reporter: hi carol. yeah conditions are deteriorating quickly. the wind gusts are what we're noticing. the wind gusts are picking up. you can see behind me the snow is just blowing. when you have one of those gusts coming it's picking up the light snow on the ground and takes it away. it is a delicate balance. it's keeping the snow off the power lines. not many power outages in boston. in nantucket, it's a different story. wind gusts of 78 miles per hour and 13,000 power outages. we have our weather station here that i bring with me every time we go on the road. we have wind gusts 30 miles per hour where i'm standing but i have a feeling that now we're getting some a little bit higher. i'll have to go check it. we've been measuring the snow. you can see how fluffy it is. it's hard to measure because with all of this snow blowing around it's hard to pick a place that will be 100% accurate. where we are, we are definitely over a foot though and the official word just in the last few minutes is boston has p

jennifer gray is in boston for us. you've been watching this storm develop overnight, jennifer. what have you seen? it's still clearly coming down right on top of you. >> reporter: i've never seen anything like this. the snow has been coming down at a rate of an inch per hour. we saw it come down heavily last night beginning around 6:00 or 7:00 and it has not let up since. we still have several hours to go. on top of that you get these incredible wind gusts that just carry the snow already on the ground and snow in the air and you cannot see anything. we have had wind gusts of 20 to 30 miles an hour out here. it will relax. you can see snow around me. you can barely see the harbor behind me. we've seen plows come through and they've done great job keeping roads clear. this is one of the roads that has only been plowed about once and you can see all the snow that's piled up just since they've been up here an hour or two ago. it definitely adds up quickly. you were talking about those wind gusts. hurricane force wind gusts. we had a wind gust of 78 miles per hour recorded in nantu

jennifer gray is in boston this morning. good morning, jennifer. >> reporter: good morning, carol. welcome to boston. it's a mess out here. winds gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. i think i just choked on a snowflake. we're seeing snow continue to come down very heavily. it's been coming down at the rate of two inches an hour for most of the morning. we're looking at it continuing to stack up and it is thick. we're looking at this powdery snow continue to pile. my weather station has been keeping tabs on the wind condition here. we have seen winds pick up to 25 miles per hour to 30 or so. and the plows have been coming by and you can see the mounds of snow that are now being piled up and this is what the streets of boston will look like with all of these snow mounds just on this side. that travel ban went into effect at midnight last night. it's still in effect. people have been taking it seriously. they have to get plows out here to clear the roads. they towed about 130 cars last night that didn't get out of the way. we also know that about 150 people statewide are in shelters. bos

let me walk over and bring in our meteorologist jennifer gray. and the fire commissioner here joe finn. thank you very much. good to see both of you. we also have dana rosenguard who's with the american red cross. so let me begin, commissioner with you. so far you were saying, you know -- i don't even know what hour we're in and it's continuing -- no major fires, no major issues for your firefighters yet. >> we were very fortunate we haven't had a major incident so far in the last 24 hours. we're certainly staffed and adequately staffed to deal with any situation. the mayor was gracious. we sat and had a very defined operational plan. we have additional engine companies and companies throughout the city to reduce the response times. side streets, the dpw commissioner is working diligently. they're doing a great job staying ahead of this. we have some issues on some side streets. so we are taking it very seriously. we're working very hard. we're certainly ready for anything that comes our way. >> it was interesting. you were saying earlier because

we have jennifer gray live for us in boston. ana cabrera is in east hampton, long island. we have ivan cabrera standing by in the cnn severe weather center with the detailed forecast. i want to go now to miguel marquez. so miguel you have the governor of new york, andrew cuomo, he's saying he's considering a travel ban here. how else is the city preparing? >> reporter: well the city is preparing by loading up on lots of salt and lots of plows. we're in one of those areas here in lower manhattan. i want to give you a little tour of where we are right now. this is the bike path on lower manhattan. down that way we should be able to see downtown. it is complete whiteout right now. this storm is on. the last 20, 30 minutes or so it's come on strong. if you look up this way, see the west side highway here. the traffic is still heavy. people getting out of town coming downtown. we're seeing a few runners and bikers on this trail still. that won't be the case. if we get that 3 feet of snow it will be up to right here on me on this trail. that giant building there, that is filled

jennifer gray is with me. i want to spring board off of the pictures and the situation in scituate, massachusetts. there were fears of coastal flooding. case in point what's happening here. she mentioned high tide at 5:00. the thing you and i heard was downed power lines mixing with the flooding. that's a potentially lethal combination. >> yeah and i think they did turn off the power which would be super beneficial in this case. let's hope that is the case. as far as the coastal flooding spot on. we expected coastal flooding in that area. we're protected here in boston. it's not going to be the case. where she is incredible pictures. high tide is coming up in the next two to three hours. the good news is winds are starting to shift. we are starting to get more of a northwest wind. i was looking at some buoy data before we came out here. that's going to work against the current coming in. so there will be flooding. there will be a high tide. with that northwest wind pushing it back out, hopefully it's not going

jennifer gray has the latest from boston. >> things are getting back to normal. slowly, but surely, most of the interstates and roads have been cleared. however, a lot of the second streets not completely clear. they called off school another day today. one of the other things is the snow piles around the city. some of them as tall as i am. they can't even see the kids waiting on the bus stop. they had to cancel school for another day. in fact temperatures will continue to be very cold here. today will be one of the warmer days we had in a five-day span with temperatures getting to the mid-30s. we will see temperatures bottom out again in the teens by the time we get to saturday. another storm system rolling through once again on friday into saturday. that's going to bring another round of snow. models still not coming together. some models say we could get 1 to 2 inches and other models with 4 to 5 until sinches. look at all the snow behind me. we had more than 24 inches of snow. it almost made the top five snowstorms all time. it did make the january snowiest s

let's get to jennifer gray in boston. we're expecting with the second storm, jennifer. >> reporter: well it's not as bad as the first, i can tell you that. we're expecting to get a few inches of snow. if you look behind me, already blanketed this park. after receiving 24 inches of snow the last thing you want to hear is more snow. that's exactly what we're going to see. let's time this system out. looks like it's going to happen late thursday night into the wee hours of friday morning and pushing out late on friday. it's basically going to be an event on friday. we're looking at anywhere from a couple of inches of snow, worse case secenarioecenarioscenario four to five inches. temperatures are going to stay very cold. we barely get above freezing before temperatures dive back down. high temperatures saturday around 17 degrees. that's where we've been the past couple of days. we were in the zpeenseens and low 20s yesterday. a little warmer today. temperatures could dive by the weekend. could possibly see a third storm mond

jennifer gray snow already fall fallen in boston people say, boston they're used to that. this is something different, isn't it jennifer? >> reporter: yeah. this is entirely different. they're comparing to it the president's day blizzard of '03, could be somewhere in the ballpark of that. i don't know if we will get more snow than that 27 inches but could come close. >> already on the ground. we have piles of snow along the streets, seeing anywhere from 1 to 2 feet of that just on the grassy areas, an inch or 2. we're talking about snow to my waist. 2 to 3 feet of snow and snow drifts above my head. that lowest branch is 9 or 10 feet. we're talking 8 foot snow drifts. we're going to see snow all over this city and piled along the streets, could go above my head. that's why the front loaders are ready and trucks are ready to haul this snow out and put them in farm fields. we have about 700 trucks ready to go in the city of boston. 35,000 tons of salt. they are ready. the mayor said we've dealt with blizzards before and we are ready and only time will tell how bad it gets. fo

let's talk to jennifer gray in boston to tell us a little about what we are expecting here with this snow and cold temperatures jennifer? >> reporter: that's right brianna. the last thing people in boston want to hear is more snow. that's exactly what they're going to get at the end of the week and possibly again by the beginning of the workweek next week. now the next snow system isn't going to be quite as bad by any stretch of the imagination. expecting a couple of chinches. not enough time for this snow to melt so it will add to it. it's going to happen friday and roll into saturday morning. of course the models are still not agreeing 100% on the forecast. looks like they could see anywhere from an inch or two. worst case scenario four to five inches of snow. we'll watch that closely over the next couple of days. cold temperatures for sure. we are going to see temperatures barely hover around freezing over the next couple of days before taking a nose dive on saturday with a high temperature only at 17 degrees. cold air through the weekend. that's for sure. then snow in the forecas

let's check in with jennifer gray who's on the ground in boston right now. boston, jennifer, has been hit pretty hard. how many inches of snow so far and how many more are they expecting? >> reporter: in portions of boston they've received over 18 inches of snow. other areas east in the city received about a foot. where i'm standing i had a tape measure earlier but it's buried out in the snow somewhere. i'm guessing we've had about 15 inches right here where we've been standing all day. it's really hard to measure because the problem is all those snow drifts the winds whipping 30 and 40 miles per hour. and it's just taking this powdery snow and moving it elsewhere elsewhere. hard to get an exact measurement. but i would say a little over a foot. it's an eerie feeling here because the roads are essentially empty. there's no street traffic. and you can hear the winds howling between the buildings. boston is protected right here. so we weren't getting the coastal flooding like you're seeing elsewhere in massachusetts. but we are getting a lot of snow. and the wi

jennifer gray is outfront she's in boston. t is this storm going to look like that's coming now, the double whammy? >> reporter: nothing at all like what this past storm looked like. this dumped 24 inches of snow over 30 inches in some areas. the next storm system you could get anywhere from an inch or two of snow which is hardly anything up to four or five inches so there is a possibility we could get another plowable snow but it's not going to be like the same snow event we just saw. the problem is some of those secondary streets aren't quite clear. a lot of people are digging their cars out from under the snow so it's a race against time to get the cars cleared out before the next snow comes. so let's time this thing out. it is going to come up the midatlantic and then impact boston say, thursday night into friday morning we could get a little bit of snow. but then friday night into saturday morning, we could get a couple of inches. now, exact amounts is hard to say, the models still disagreeing a little bit. anywhere from 1

. >>> lets head to boston and cnn meteorologist jennifer gray. we know the travel ban has been lifted but things certainly aren't back to normal right? >> reporter: the highways and interstates, those are all clear looking really good. we're right here. one of the major thoroughfares in boston. atlantic avenue. traffic is very very light. there goes another plow. they are still working today to get these roads up and running. motorists are having a fairly easy time getting around. this road is normally just packed with cars. you can see barely anyone. so the city is getting back up and running. very nicely. do expect major delays. flights have been delayed. we've seen 100 cancellations in boston. that's the most of any airport in the u.s. they are trying to get that back on target as well. and then just clearing out the streets. look at these big snow mounds right behind me in the park. you can see a lot of snow there. once all of the streets get cleared, you'll see these continue to pile up. they are taking all of this snow to different snow far

let's go to jennifer gray in boston.here they're getting the road cleared for people to drive. what's the latest? >> reporter: they're trying to get the roads cleared, but people should not be on the roads in boston. you were talking about how fast they cleared out columbus circle. let me show you what we're doing in boston. this is one of the plows that's out here. he's clearing off the sidewalk. definitely a lot slower process. if you can swing over there skip he is a little tiny bobcat right there. he's pushing the snow back. he's been going at it for about 30 passes and hasnd had quite the same response that you had in columbus circle. they do have the huge plows out there on the streets and that's what they've been using to clear here in boston. they're having to take passes frequently because the snow as you can see, is coming down heavily. 2 to 3 inches per hour at least and the winds are really blowing. the winds have picked up over the last hour or two. this is where we plowed just about 20 minutes ago. it's alr

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray far from feeling like her life is returning to normal. way. >> reporter: yeah, you're right. more trouble. we're going to see two more snowstorms in the next couple of days but like you said boston is slowly returning to normal in the time being. the ferry is back up and running. we've seen a lot more foot traffic through here. people returning to work. we did see a lot of delays yesterday on the t. all the lines were delayed but that is expected to get better and better day by day. look behind me. the snow mounds. schools are once again canceled for today. most of the interstates clear. a lot of those side streets are not. look at this the sidewalks and these mounds behind me from all of the plowing, that's one of the reasons school was canceled. the school buses can't even see the kids standing on the other side of those mounds waiting for the bus. so safety precautions, they did cancel school. let's get to that forecast though because i want to show you what's going to be happening in the next couple of days. pretty interesting. we'll

our meteorologist jennifer gray is here with me in boston. you've been looking at the latest total.it goes as they expect it's going to be an easy record but we're not there yet. >> we have about 23.3 at the airport. that's where the official readings are kept. it's the number one snowiest january storm. that has already broken a record. we haven't made it into the top five all time worse snowstorms. we get about an inch and a half we will. we need about three more inches to be at number one. it's going to continue to come down for the next four or five hours. >> i know there are these gusts but an inp ch an hour. is that possible like the mayor was saying. it's definitely coming down. it's a little misleading because we have such powerful wind gusts. some of this is knowsnow on the ground. it's about an inch an hour. we have that swath down into portions of connecticut that's still getting bit of snow. that's continue to continue for the next two to three, four hours between ten and mitt night. that's where we will start to see it taper off. it will pull out. by 6:00 tomorrow morni

let's go to meteorologist jennifer gray in boston.the situation right now and when does it all change? >> reporter: right now things are very quiet. you're seeing some very very right snowflakes. this is nothing compared to what we're going to see this time tomorrow. look behind me. roads are quiet. we did see a lot of people coming off the ferry this morning going to work. we're approaching the lunch hour. we're right here in downtown boston. we're hardly seeing any cars. it does look like activity is not quite as much as we would see on a normal weekday. schools are in session. they'll make the decision later today whether to have school tomorrow. of course as you said the mayor will be talking around 1:00. look at the snow already on the ground. this is from the snowstorm that happened a couple days ago. you can see that it just piled up on the grassy areas. some areas it's about a foot or two deep. we're going to see two to three additional feet fall on top of that. plus you are talking about the snow drifts. we'll see blowing sno

meteorologist jennifer gray is standing by for us in the cnn severe weather center.dest temps of the season so far, right? >> absolutely. and when you have temperatures feeling like 30 and 40 degrees below zero schools in michigan didn't even go to school today. we had temperatures so cold that you could get frostbite if you are outside only a half hour. so we're talking about a dangerous cold. it's serious. minneapolis right now feeling like 15 degrees below zero. tonight's lows 3 in chicago, 3 below in minneapolis. temperatures around 17 in kansas city. these temperatures are going to stay cold for some time. tonight, there is a windchill advisory in for the northern plains the upper midwest, where we're going to see temperatures feeling like 25 to 50 degrees below zero. that's what it's going to feel like when you wake up in the morning in minneapolis. on tuesday morning, it will feel like 40 below. we're going to winds of 15 miles per hour with gusts even higher. d.c. it reaches you by wednesday when your low is going to be 10 degrees, feeling like 10 or 15 degre

our meteorologist jennifer gray is right in the middle of what's going on. >> yeah one of the main reasons they want people off the roads at 8:00 is because we have already started to see plows ride by. with all these people on the streets, they can't do their job. so they are wanting people to get off the streets as soon as possible. in fact a driving ban goes in effect at midnight so people are now leaving the city. they are going home they are going to get into their home where it's nice and cozy and they are going to stay there until this storm is over. snow is already on the ground. this is from a storm system that happened just a couple of days ago. look at this. it is packed in and if we get two to three additional feet on top of this we could see snow covering this sign. that's how high it's going to be plus with the wind gusting at 60 to 70 miles per hour we will see snow drifts above my head. that is going to mean major trouble across the city. we are also going to be looking at the possibility of power outages. worst case scenario people could be

meteorologist jennifer gray is live in chicago battling the bitter cold for us how is it there?lisyn it is cold. temperatures where we are right now, about 5 degrees below zero when you factor in the wind chill, it feels like 25 degrees below zero and look at chicago river behind me. half of it is frozen solid from our vantage point. you can see the steam on top of it like a hot tub and you know that water is cold because part of it is frozen. so you know it's getting close to freezing. but because the air temperature is so much colder above it it's acting like a hot tub down there, it's steaming. we have wind chill warnings in place, we have wind chill advisories in place for much of the country. that does also include the northeast. we're seeing wind chills anywhere from 15 degrees to 30 degrees below zero. some of the extreme areas, 40 and 50 degrees below zero can you get frostbite within a matter of minutes and you can get hypothermia. a lot of schools are canceled today. >> jennifer that's an incredible vision behind you to see the cold water steaming. >> like a hot tub, y

let's get to meteorologist jennifer gray. on the ground in chicago. the wind chill i am told makes it feel as bad as 30 below zero which is why for once i am happy i am not you, jennifer. >> i bet are you happy, and yeah temperatures are expected to actually get colder right now the wind chill, it feels between 10 and 20 degrees below zero. a lot of you may have one of these at home. we bought one, it doesn't do you any good. it only goes down to zero we bought the big daddy. so we could tell you what the temperature is like out here. i'm telling you right now where we are, it feels like 10 degrees below zero it is 10 degrees below zero and feels like 14 below. last check at the airport it was about 2 degrees. you can see the river behind me starting to freeze over. in fact you can see part of it not frozen yet and then the very slick part frozen solid. so it will probably continue to freeze throughout the day. because guess what this is not the worst of it temperatures are actually going to be even colder tomorrow. you can see the flags blowing in the
