jennifer gray is here with me in "the situation room." r, the forecast you got new information all the time that's coming in. and it looks like it's going from bad to worse. >> yeah, it's constantly updating. we're still on track to have one of the largest snowfall that d.c. has ever seen. and we could see higher amounts as you move up to the north as well. i want to remind everybody that just because it isn't snowing hard doesn't make it a blizzard. blizzard has certain criteria. the winds have to be at least 35 miles per hour and visibility less than a quarter of a mile and that has to last for three hours or more. so we're not quite in the blizzard conditions, but we do have those blizzard warnings in effect including the d.c. area, baltimore, philly, as well as new york. and here's the radar right now. you can see the very heavy snow pulling in to d.c. it is right on the fringes of philadelphia. new york city you have a couple more hours before you start to see snow there. in some of these darker bans you can see coming up into the d.c

also jennifer gray is live at the national mall. why don't we check in with jennifer gray in washington first to see what is going on there. jennifer, tell us what is up. what are you seeing? >> reporter: don, it is continuing to get worse and worse and it's really the wind that's making it so bad because the snow is just blowing all around and even the snow already on the ground, the wind is causing it to blow around so it's making visibility pretty poor here in d.c., and look behind me, you can see the blanket of snow, the first snow flake fell this afternoon around 1:00 on the dot. we do see a couple of cars out here but really all and all, people are staying home. we haven't seen too many folks out and about. we do know that there are about 60 national guard folks, troops that will come out here around 11:00 p.m. with 30 vehicles and patrol the streets overnight. of course, the metro shutting down around 11:00 p.m. people have no choice but to stay indoors. we've seen quite a few plows trying to take care of the streets staying

to jennifer gray now for us. when you look at the difference a day makes, no more whipping winds, no more snowfall but now it's all about the big dig. a lot of people point to washington and they say always seem to struggle so much with a little bit of snow let alone a lot. how are they doing? >> yeah, they're not used to it. mid-atlantic. they're almost up there in the northeast with some of the cities that deal with it quite a bit, but they really don't, you know. and kudos to the city officials and the crews are out all night plowing these streets because a lot of the major thoroughfares are looking much, much better. but it's all those secondary roads and roads in the neighborhoods, those are the ones that are going to take a while just to get this city back up and going. this is a big city. it is going to take a while. the other concern will be the temperature. it was beautiful today. blue skies, temperatures got right above freezing, but we did see some melting. so on the sidewalks, the streets especially.

our meteorologist jennifer gray joining me now from washington. sort of a slow roll for d.c.to get things back up and running, huh? >> reporter: yeah. you just covered it. i mean, so many things are still going to be closed tomorrow. the streets are still not in tiptop shape as you can imagine. i mean, look at all this snow. we had so much snow that dulles ranked as the second snowiest storm ever recorded. reagan at the fourth. and so a lot of people have never seen snow like this. it's just going to take a while. the plows were out all day long, and most of the major thoroughfares are cleared out for the most part, but a lot of the second daary roads includin roads right here in downtown are still not plowed so you can imagine how some of the residential areas are looking if some of the roads downtown aren't even cleared out of the way. so it is just going to take time. 400 additional pieces of machinery have been brought into the city to help speed up that process, but everyone just needs to be patient. one thing to note is that we had a little bit of melting today. tempera
