cnn meteorologist jennifer gray, she's been helping us understand this. ifer, looking at that map there, first of all, boy, look at that ranking to see the u.s. well above for a time, new york city well above some of the worst polluted cities in the world. >> uh-huh. >> tell us about that ranking, and tell us how long it's likely to stay like this. >> well, new york city right now is topping the world for the worst air quality of any major city in the entire globe. so new york city's at that number-one spot now. now this changes about every five minutes. so in the next 10 or 15 minutes, that could drop to number three, four. but regardless, over the last two days or so, new york city has fallen somewhere within this top ten list of the poorest air quality in the world. toronto has been right up there, as well, with new york over the last couple of days, as well. so it just drives home how horrible the air quality is across the northeast, new england, even into the mid-atlantic. you can barely make out the skyscrapers there. i don't know if you can see it o

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray joins me now.e'll get you that picture momentarily when we have it. first question is, how extensive in this -- is this smoke, and when you describe that, i want to get a sense of how long it's going to be here. let's start with the scope first. >> yeah. this is huge, jim. we've seen these fires burning out of control for the last several weeks or more across canada. this is something that's going to settle in for quite some time. we could see this off and on throughout the entire summer. i want to shed light on the color, though. you show those pictures, and it's the orange color. why does the smoke not look gray? it has everything to do with the sun. the sun contains all the colors of the rainbow, and those contain short wavelengths and some other colors contain long wavelengths. the smoke blocks the shorter wavelengths, the blues and greens, only allowing those red and orange colors to pass through. so that's why when you see the smoke it does have that red and orange hue. of course it is a lot

meteorologist jennifer gray joins us now. where is the smoke heaviest right now, jennifer? >> really, the new york area is where it's at its worst. you can see visibility is at 1 1/2 miles. we have seen it down to less than a mile at some points in the afternoon. you can see syracuse under a mile. so really, this area right here is where we are seeing the worst of it and the thickest smoke. however, by tonight i think some to have smoke will shift a little further to the west and a little further to the south. so when it clears up for one area, it will be bad for another. this is a time lapse throughout the day, and you can just see it worse b n with the hours that h gone by. new york city now tops the map of the worst city in the world for air quality. it's been on the top ten list for the last couple of days. but for the last few hours, has been sitting at number one. you can see where the red and purple dots are, that's where the worst air quality is. even back into the ohio valley, that's where the worst quality air is going to move over the course of 2 next few days. s

let's go to jennifer gray in the weather center. what do people need to be aware of before they head out? >> they need to know that they will see more storms as we go throughout the next day or two. we had an active day yesterday just added to the flight delays and cancellations. we had one tornado report. you see almost 300 wind reports. 42 hail reports. that will definitely slow things down in the skies. also severe storm threat anywhere from texas panhandle all the way up through portions of the plains, midwest and in the southeast. so a lot of scattered activity. still seeing oppressive heat across the south and also poor air quality because of the wildfire smoke. so really a lot going on. here is the main threat. damaging winds, large hail a possibility for isolated tornado. that includes some pretty big cities, we're talking about st. louis, nashville, kansas city, all included in this. and it is pretty far reaching. so the storms will ride along that ridge of high pressure that is actually keeping the south very hot. on the n

jennifer gray has the forecast. when can relief from the smoke and heat be expected? >> i think relief from the smoke will come before relief from the heat, but it will get worse before it gets better across much of the ohio valley, midwest. you can see the red and purple dots indicating unhealthy air quality and spreading into washington, d.c., new york has taken a hit, now a moderate level with that smoke. but go have the poor air quality alerts not only the midwest, but not the northeast. i-95 corridor, d.c., philly, new york, you are now under the poor air quality alerts as well. chicago, detroit, d.c. taking the top three spots for the worst air quality in the world for any major city. this updates every ten minutes or so, but right now the top three spots locked in. nothing to brag about there. the air quality is dangerous for people who are respiratory issues. visibility under a mile in cincinnati. here is the smoke forecast and you k can see it will start to dissipate the coming days. it lingers a bit across the mid-atlantic and northeast, but beyond today i t

meteorologist jennifer gray track it all for us from cnn's weather center. nnifer, how long is all this smoke expected to stick around? >> well, it's really a hard question to answer because as long as we're stuck in this weather pattern, we're really going to get smoke across the east. now up day it might be worse for new york and the next day it might be worse for somewhere across the ohio valley, but it's really going stick around in this region for quite some time, at least for the next seven to ten days and possibly longer. you can see where the worst of it right now. of course, new york city is really the worst as far as visibility goes. only about a mile in new york. syracuse around two miles that we've seen. new york city down to under one mile visibility over the afternoon. the current air quality index, you can see all of these dots in red, purple and even extending into upstate new york. that's where we have the most unhealthy air and that's what we're talking about where people are being urged to stay inside and wear masks. new york city right now

let's turn now to cnn meteorologist jennifer gray in the weather center tracking what this smoke has . jennifer, i'm not going to lie, i have been coughing all day. i think one of the key questions is how soon can we get relief? >> i believe it, boris. it has been awful. looks like over the weekend and maybe into the early part of next week we could get some rain in here. that's what we really need to try to clear out some of the smoke, as well as a shift in wind direction and we're going to get a little bit of that today. we talked about when it improves for someone it will be bad for someone else, so we are improving across the new york city area, but we're getting worse across the mid-atlantic, d.c., now down to two miles visible. new york city, you're up to four. this time yesterday you were less than a mile for visibility but can see that smoke just traveling down to the south and really just swallowing up the city. this is the smoke from yesterday. you can clearly see it from the satellite picture. that was it entering the new york city area. now we take a live look at our earth

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray is in the weather center. jennifer, where are the danger zones now?g the gulf coast, and into the portions of the southeast, and damaging wind gusts and large hail will be the primary threats today, but we could see isolated tornadoes the daix and we could see more risks today. the greatest risk is five percent chance from the gulf of mexico from the louisiana and mississippi border to the florida panhandle which is the area to be on the risk of tornadoes. again, it is a small chance, but we could see some. we have tornado warnings right here in southern portions of birmingham, and very, very strong storms, and a lot of lightning associated with these, and severe thunderstorm warnings across portions of georgia and southern portions of alabama. so as they continue the push to the east, we will see them slide down across the gulf coast, and this is late tonight around 8:00, and you can see the spotty showers, and storms through atlanta, charleston and charlotte through the overnight hours, and then across the ark la >> and i understand it is hot in tex

and jennifer gray is joining us. how long will all of this last? >> it will be a big day as far as the heat, the storms, the smoke. you name it, we've got it going on across the country. so we'll start with the storms because i do think that we'll see some improvement. that is the good news here. we have had some pretty nasty storms across the eastern sea board, the front has finally advanced. so i think that there will be some improvement. we do have the domino effect of the flights canceled and so it will take a while to catch up, but at least the weather should be a little better. we could see some showers around boston and new york city. but it won't be anywhere like we've seen the last couple days. so damaging winds, large hail, potential tornado threat across the midwest. and we have a lot of smoke we're dealing with. you see the smoke from the canadian wildfires is sinking to the south. we have incredibly poor air quality alert. into surprise in chicago, detroit, you could see very unhealthy to hazardous levels. chicago had the worst air qua

cnn's jennifer gray is live in the weather center for us. extraordinary images. w would you describe what's happening here, jennifer? >> max, we've had a strong string of severe weather, with four tornado reports. 280 wind reports, 107 hail reports. we've had large reports of hail as well, hail large in diameter. we have a thunderstorm warning for arklatex, and mississippi stretching through portions of the mid-south. storms will fire up in the mid-atlantic even into the northeast. and late tonight, we're also seeing storms start to fire up across the south. and another round of storms overnight for some of the same areas that were hit very hard last night. we're going to talk about main threats being the damaging wind and large hail. however, you can't rule out the possibility of an isolated tornado across portions of north carolina into the mid-atlantic. this does include d.c., philadelphia, even new york city could see strong storms later today. there's also a flash flood threat, with the storms comes heavy rainfall. we're going to see the potential for flash f

jennifer gray has the latest for you. >> reporter: for the last several weeks, these wildfires across canada have been burning out of control and it has been sending a lot of smoke into the u.s. and most recently we've seen a lot of the smoke pushing into the northeast as well as new england. in the midwest as well. and so you can see from the satellite imagery, we're just seeing that thick smoke, heavy haze pushing into these regions. and of course a couple of fires that have broken out in the northeast and new england have added to it, but the bulk of this is from the fires in canada. this is a picture of new york city skyline from midday tuesday, you can buarely see th buildings. we have a thick smoky sky across the northeast and that will continue throughout the day today. it is creating a very poor air quality across the northeast, new england, as well as back into the midwest. and as mentioned, a lot of that is from the fires from alberta that pushed in, but we're seeing very unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially people that have respiratory issues. they have been urged to

and jennifer gray has the draft. where is severe weather expected to affect travelers?e had rough weather across the northeast and it has a tomorrdomino effect. we've had strong storms across the east coast. we had seven tornado reports in the last 24 hours. 202 wind reports. so some really rough weather and the cold front is not quite all the way through, so we're still getting some showers and storms across the mid-atlantic into the northeast and new england. so once the front pushes through, the storm should clear out. so we are going to look for improvement by the time we get into i'd say late today, we still have storms to deal with today and this evening and once we get into the overnight hours and into tomorrow, you can see much better weather. so still lingering storms, but the biggest threat is out near the plains with potential for tornados today as well. and you mentioned heat across texas, this extreme heat -- a heatwave still going on, this dome of high pressure over the lone star state. it is trapping all of the heat in and it has been going on for more th
