jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon tonight. jennifer, according to this paper, there this may be an attempt by the military to manipulate the kind of stories that reporters cover is there anything to this? >> well, we have been able to confirm, shep, that, in fact, the military did hire a pr firm based in d.c. called the renden groupment and they provide the military with assessments like the ones you see here of journalist work. this one was written on august 14th. and it was based on the work of a freelance journalist based in jordan. and the accusation by stars and stripes and others is that they were using this assessment of the journalist' work to basically engage them and possibly influence the way their stories would turn out in the end. shepard: what's the military saying about this? >> well, the military is not denying that they hired this group, the renden group and that they were getting information about stories and ratings of stories. but they say that there was no mall intent. that they weren't trying to influence

jennifer griffin joins us live with this story. >> hello, bret. this is the first time that somali pirates off the coast of somolia have fired weapons at an armed u.s. military aircraft. the incident happened in the last 24 hours when a u.s. navy helicopter made a surveillance flight over a taiwan niece-flagged fishing vessel, which was taken over in april. you can see the pirates standing over the heavy caliber weapon and then you see the blast fire, the black necks coming toward the cam rax the u.s. coast guard was about 3,000 yards away t returned to base unharmed. the pirates have turned the wind farm into a moargtsship to attack other vessels such as the maersk alabama, the first u.s. vessel taken hostage this year. captain richard phillips shown on the right was taken hostage and freed when a team of navy seals shot and killed his pirate captors but piracy continues to be a problem. there have been 136 incidents involving pirates this year alone. five ships, and 105 people are currently being held hostage by pirates. 235 pirates have been ca

and jennifer griffin has been working on this story all morning. there an urgent need for them to get together this weekend? >> i have been talking to people who have been covering this building for many years and they say this is highly unusual for a defense secretary to have a very stealth meeting, meeting the joint chiefs of staff without any aides, flying to a secret location in a third country. however, what i have found out since then it is essentially -- and this coincides with what the press secretary told us -- that gates wanted to get a firsthand assessment on where the strategy review was going. you remember general mcchrystal was tasked to come up with a review under the strategy should go, what resources will be needed to support the strategy. gates wanted to talk to him face to face. he did not want any leaks or pressure from the press. he asked that seven people be at the meeting. himself, and joins of chief, the general mullen, general mcchrystal, general david rodriquez, the top policy chief who was and ombudsmen to afghanistan. al

jennifer griffin is at the pentagon for us. what do we know so far?th koreans are treating this as an extremely high- profile visit, as much as the white house is downplaying it, and the caribbean state news agency released informations saying that president clinton had a courteous mention, saying that he was on a private message mission, without a message from obama. but north koreans say they had a light -- wide range of talks. you're seeing clinton being drawn into a propaganda who with the north koreans. jon: what was the reason behind sending clinton? >> everyone knew when the journalists were sentenced to that it would take a high- profile visit by an american that was respected by north korea to appeal for amnesty and their release. the problem is that it comes at an awkward time in terms of the u.s. and others trying to pressure north korea on its nuclear program. you can rest assured that iran will be watching how this plays out, because they have three americans in their custody right now and they are going to be expecting something in retur

jennifer griffin is on its. we confirm that the justice department is investigating what is happening? >> yes, the story came out in the "washington post," a lead story, and we have been able to confirm with a lead official and intelligence officer that this investigation has been going on for six weeks to eight weeks. they are mentioning three defense attorneys who were assigned to defend some of the 9/11 co-conspirators' down in gitmo. some of those five co- conspirators decided to forgo representation, but at least two of them are being represented by military defense. they are also being investigated about the john adams project, part of the aclu that has come together to defend the detainees. what they are being accused of, the investigation surrounds whether they revealed names and photographs and identities of covert cia operatives involved in the interrogation programs at cia presence overseas. -- cia prisons overseas. it is a controversy. they were not operatives at the time, so no laws may have been br

jon: jennifer griffin is live with us. who won?> it is cleared kim jong il in the north koreans have one. for years they have wanted some legitimacy for their country. america has always said they would only talk to them in six- partyç talks, including our allies. kim jong-il got what he wanted, a former american president. as much as the white house and secretary of state say that there was no quid quo pro, and that president clinton was there on a private mission, -- it may have been a humanitarian issue, but even u.s. officials are telling us that he was given a briefing by cia and others before his visit. he was briefed on the latest with what they were doing, and there is no doubt duringç that three and a half hours with kim jong il, the issue must have come up. jon: is it possible that they held these meetings and did not discuss these issues? >> look at who met bill clinton. the deputy foreign minister who has been in charge of nuclear negotiations. he was very prominent. also, the north koreans, they broktwittered about t

i want to bring in jennifer griffin from the pentagon. anything you were struck by by what the president said or did not say? >> the real elephant in the room is the war in afghanistan and whether the president is going to commit more troops, and if so, how many? what is the eventual goal? last month robert gates said they would postpone the trend in the review -- strategy review for afghanistan with the general stanley mcchrystal. they wanted to do that after the afghan elections which took place on thursday. president obama made clear that troops are coming home from iraq. they have wanted to telegraph that to the iraqi leadership, just in case there were any doubts. the question is how many will be routed to afghanistan? he said he will not send troops without a clear strategy, good intelligence, and it will not be a war that is one militarily. he described the afghan war as a war of necessity. that suggested to me that he knows he will have to commit resources, and likely troops. the question is how many. he talked about diplomacy and

jennifer griffin is joining me live from the pentagon.ng to wrap myself around this, to figure out what it would do this. what is the mode? >> if you talk to lawyers and defense attorneys assigned to the 9/11 code-conspirators, they say they are trying to defend these guys and they are building a case, and part of it is that the cia used harsh interrogation techniques, and even torture. in the process of building the case, they may have stepped over the line, and that is what this investigation is about. by showing these 9/11 co- conspirators down in gitmo pictures operatives, some covert, some overt, by showing those pictures, did they break a law, and did they go too far? the aclu says they did not, that they were trying to defend their clients. but others we spoke to are very concerned that this did put the cia operatives lives at risk and it also may have broken federal laws. what we are also learning in the last few minutes is that one of the pictures -- there are about 45 shown to people -- one of the pictures is of a retired cia of

fox news national security correspondent jennifer griffin broke the news about captain speicher this morning and joining us live on the phone. his plane was shot down 18 years ago. why so long to get to this point? >> it's amazing that there have been many attempts to find him over the years and false leads. initials were carved in iraqi prison cell that made some in the military think perhaps he was alive. it's been a roller coaster for his family. in 1995, the international red cross and team of army and navy specialists were allowed by saddam hussein to go to the anbar desert to look for the crash. they didn't unearth anything that time. the break through came from tip from iraqi providing good intelligence from the past and knew of iraqi citizens who had seen the plane go down. and at the time, they buried spi speicher in the desert. it took a week of digging but they found the bone fragme fragments. >> shannon: i remember there were changes in the captain for him. it was a roller coaster for his family. it had to be be a big part of it. >> he was listed as killed in action. they
