one last time before i hand it off to the top of the hour with jennifer griffin at the pentagon. jennifer? >> we learned that the raid was launched by about 40 u.s. navy seals from a base in afghanistan. not pakistan as some pakistanis officials have been putting out. we underand this from an official there n. there there is a picture of bin laden just released. it is a bloody picture and not something that anybody would want to look at. it was about 40 navy seals half of whom landed on the ground. 24 got out of the helicopters and land on the ground. i'm told from a senior u.s. intelligence source that they actually asked him to surrender. they didn't give him much time and he was shot. we understand it was chinook and blackhawk helicopters involved in the operation. we don't know what base but the shortest distance between the base in the j jalalabad area because you wouldn't want to have to refuel over afghanistan. anded there is intelligence saying that the pakistanis did not help in the develop of the plan for the raid, the intelligence that went into the raid and that it was

jennifer griffin, live at the pentagon with those details for us. jennifer. >> reporter: well, jon, we've just spoken to a u.s. official who has seen the photographs of bin laden's dead body and the source described to us what it looked like. essentially, what you can see in the photograph is a large open wound to the forehead. you can actually see brain matter in the picture, we're told. we're also told that one of bin laden's eyes is open, one is completely gone. you cannot see the exit wound in the back of the head, we're told, or the chest wound, but again, one of the reasons the white house is taking so much time in deciding whether to release the photos is the gruesome nature of it. the person who saw the photo told us that you -- that bin laden is easily recognizable, however, in the photo. we're also getting some details we can confirm, that he was found wearing what's called a shalwal kamiz, a pakistani outfit, pajama-like in nature and in it was sewn in 5000 euros, about $1000.2 phone numbers were found sewn into that shalwal kamiz, so that

let's go to jennifer griffin. she is at the pentagon has she has been throughout the night. what are we learning about the details of osama bin laden's burial at sea. >> reporter: what we learned is that it took place on board the u.s. s. carl vincent, that is the u.s. aircraft carrier in the north arabian sea. at 1:10 eastern time the body was prepared in an islamic fashion according to islamic right tule and was prepared for burial. certain rights were read over the body and translated into arabic by a u.s. service member. then we are told at 2:00am the body was completely plea paired, it was washed, wrapped in a white sheet as is tradition, it was then placed upon a board that had been prepared and it was eased into the sea, we are told. all of that happened just hours after the really -- lens 12 hours after the railess than 12e compound. that took place at about 3:30 eastern. osama bin laden was killed at the end of that 40-minute raid. there were a number of ways in which they tried to identify the body, identified him visually before he was killed, including asking his

jennifer griffin joins us live from the pentagon. >> reporter: what we have right now that is interesting is it's the first video that we have seen of the helicopter tail, the super secret blackhawk helicopter tail being moved from the compound on may 2. it was taken we are told by pakistani military sources to a base in abbottabad, then it was transferred to the air base just outside the islamabad, the capital. that's the military town. we also can report that the person responsible for trying to get this helicopter tailback if you will under secretary of defense for policy has reached out to the pakistanis. there is no word yet as to what the answer from the pakistanis is, but she has reached out. there is an expectation the pakistanis will return that face as soon as possible. we also have more detail about the town of abbottabad itself. there are two reports this morning in both "the washington post" and the "new york times" that there was a safe house being used by the cia in abbottabad. we have new video from the town shot by james in pakistan. we are told that town -- when you go t

jennifer griffin has been on this again all day, and is bringing us new details live now from the pentagon. this story just gets richer and more incredible with every passing detail jennifer. what do you know now? >> reporter: well it's incredible. what we know is the location of usama bin laden's wife who is wounded in the leg. she is the 29-year-old yemeni. heshe was born in yemen. she was married to usama bin laden in 2000 and her passport expired in 2006. u.s. officials have not had access to her. she is in a hospital along with nine others from the compound. she is in a hospital called the combined military hospital under tight security. the pakistanis have control over access to her and the others. it's not clear from us, we've asked u.s. officials whether thief asked to interview usama bin laden's wife. if you talk about a mother load of intelligence, this woman saw everything that happened to usama bin laden from 2000 onwards and u.s. officials have not had access to her. she is in the hospital, not in serious condition we are told. she was shot in the leg. she was the woman who lu

. >> jennifer griffin from fox news. i was wondering what the current estimates are in terms of how many foreign fighters are in afghanistan, and whether you've seen a flood of foreign fighters into your region since bin laden's killing, and did you change your force posture or reposition in order to catch them as they came back across the border? >> jennifer, thanks for the question. along the board -- border, we've gone to on increase when they announced a spring campaign. the way we got at that was offensive. we have several operations throughout the breath of regional commanders, stayed on the offensive, and that's the best way to be defensive. we continue cowork that. i have not seen a large number of foreign fighters come through since bin laden east death. i will tell you over the course of a year if i were to put an estimate on the percentage, it's around 80% from afghanistan, and 15%-20% foreign fighter. i don't think that's gone up or down here over the last several months. you know, we do continue to get repor
