in fact, team effort obviously on our jennifer griffin reporting she spoke to a senior u.s. defense official that is corroborating the same information we are getting from the white house. this official telling jennifer griffin we cannot confirm these reports at this stage about gadhafi's son potentially being captured. it is clear momentum is on the side of the rebels. we got a statement a short time ago from the u.s. state department. they say the president, and secretary of state clinton are getting regular updates on the situation. they also added that basically they believe it is important for the rebels to be thinking about what happens in a post gadhafi world. to be prepared for that possibility. the state department's statement saying that they believe that gadhafi's days are numbered. again, they don't want to get ahead of the facts. they want to let this play out. number two, they are trying to send that signal to the rebels there's a concern obviously within the u.s. government about all this devolving into chaos and the situation being worse than it is now. obvio

let's go to jennifer griffin joining us by phone now. jennifer, if you could, please put this into perspective nationally for us. >> well, i think, harris, what's important to remember is that those that i'm speaking to in washington. whether they are pentagon officials or other u.s. officials who are watching as events unfold in tripoli. things are happening so quickly that really, what we're seeing on in terms of live feeds from the capital. they're not getting any more information than what's coming out live. it's very clear at this point in time. i spoke to one u.s. official who said basically that the momentum that the opposition has built over the past several weeks seems to be paying off and the battle for tripoli clearly underway. the fall of gaddafi may now be obtainable and we're hearing reports from the front lines from reporters who are travelling with the rebels, that the only part of the capital that is not in rebel control at this point in time is gaddafi's compound. pan the question is, where is gaddafi himself? there are

jennifer griffin joins us now from the pentagon with more. jennifer. >> reporter: jon we are getting some details about how the chinook was shot down. a spokesman for the pentagon said it looked like it was a rocket grenade, holder held. these are highly inaccurate missiles, they are not stinger missiles that brought down so many soviet helicopters and drove the soviets out of afghanistan. one source is describing this to mow as just a very unfortunate, very lucky shot for the taliban who shot down this chinook that was flying, those special operators, the navy seals who were on stand by as a quick reaction called in by the army rangers who took fire in the tangi valley. jon: tell us about some of the seals killed. >> reporter: you mentioned 22 of them were navy seals. many of them members of the storied six. eric cars on vaughn was a special ops guy. he asked if he could return to combat and went out six weeks bev was killed. his grandmother of union city, tennessee, said he wanted to be a seal since he was a boy. he left for afghanistan two

helicopter downed in afghanistan, we have more now from jennifer griffin live from the pentagon. ere is breaking news on this. jennifer, what have you learned? >> reporter: what we've learned from general john allen, the main commander out in afghanistan, is that special operations forces on monday took out and killed the shooter of the chinook helicopter that caused 38 members to be killed on friday. they basically had local intelligence tips, they followed a local mullah, a taliban commander, and the purported shooter of the chinook, they located them in a forest, they called in an f-16 air strike and they dropped a bomb on them. listen to general allen: >> we trapped them, as we would in the aftermath of any operation, and we dealt with them with a kinetic strike, and in the aftermath of that, we have achieved certainty that they, in fact, were killed in that strike. >> reporter: it's important to point out that the original operation on friday, the taliban leader that they were going after, they did not kill that taliban leader. they are still pursuing him. also, general allen

. >> jennifer griffin joins us and what are you learning about how usual or unusual it is to have so many members of a single unit on one helicopter. >> well, sources tell me it is extremely unusual for a large single unit to be placed on one helicopter and normally going into a mission like that you are divided between two helicopters and it suggests that they had to leave quickly and they piled on one helicopter. it was not part of the 160th air wing. that is usually the group that flies for the seal team six. this was a regular army canuck and not as many machine guns on board. they only have a m240 and not as well armed but they are used because of number of approximate operations in staff afghanistan. they are having to reach out to the other army helicopters. hange o command ceremony for special operations. on monday admiral william mccraven, the man best known for basically running the bin laden raid and he's a seal himself, he is scheduled to take over special operations command and there was a change of command ceremony in tampa, florida. it is a bitter sweet time for a man

jennifer griffin went to check out the new stealth fighter's premier. >> we are here at the naval airor what really is the first test flight of the marine f-35b the joint strike fighter being used and developed by the marines. the first time the press has one given an opportunity to see the test flight. what is amazing about this stealth fighter yet, this new generation, a fifth generation they call it is that it is essentially a fighter jet that can vertically land like a helicopter. it costs more than $100 million. the largest procurement program in the pentagon history. just before robert gates left he put the marine joint strike fighter progap on probation for two years because of overruns. now, they have gotten some of the issues under control and moves them into another phase of the program as lawmakers debate how much the defense budget will be cut over the next ten years the question is will the joint strike fighter program be armed? harmed? jennifer griffin, fox news. >> shannon: s&p's managing editor says there is a good chance another credit downgrade is in store for the u.

jennifer griffin has details in the pentagon. of this before, jennifer, but what are the more surprising revelations maybe some of the allegations in this report that really strike a nerve this time? >> reporter: it is perhaps the steady march towards achieving stealth weaponry. the expanse of the defense budget up 12% this year with no real explanation why china's military is expanding. the record number of space launches. the accusation about china's military essentially being involved in cyber warfare of. page 5 of the report, numerous computer systems around the world including those owned by the u.s. government were target of intrusions some appear to originated within the prc, the peoples republic china. that report is annual report to congress and mentions cyber attacks eminating from china. what is not mentioned a very important incident where pakistanis showed chinese defense officials the tail of the helicopter left bend whin t bin laden raid. there were stealth abilities associated with the tail and chinese had access

let's go to jennifer griffin, who is working the phones of course from the pentagon, and, what are youearing about this? >> reporter: well, martha, a senior u.s. defense official tells me based on their latest intelligence, they still believe that muammar qaddafi is in tripoli. is in the capital of tripoli but cannot confirm reports from the rebels they've surrounded an apartment block where they think they have muammar qaddafi and his sons surrounded. that is a block of apartments, not far from the compound that was stormed of course by the opposition in recent days. there is also another report by french reporters, suggesting that about 10:00 a.m. on wednesday, the rebels made it to a safe house, where they believe muammar qaddafi had spent the night and they found evidence that he had recently been there and narrowly had managed to -- narrow -- he had narrowly escaped and the pentagon cannot confirm those reports, either. but, again, they are still working under the assumption that muammar qaddafi is in the capital of tripoli. the u.k.'s foreign minister, foreign secretary, just sai

jennifer griffin live at the pentagon with the latest for us. >> reporter: defense officials suggestthe latest intelligence suggests that moammar qaddafi has not left tripoli. they think he is still in tripoli. that makes some sense since his two sons were left behind. they were caught by opposition rebels yesterday as they entered the capitol of tripoli. opposition forces are in control of an estimated 95% of the capitol. the last time the world heard from moammar qaddafi was on state television this worker, in which he urged his supporters, to keep fighting and take up arms against the quote, rebel rats. he has not been heard from since. david cameron issued the following statement this morning, quote, we have no confirmation of moammar qaddafi's whereabouts but at least two of his sons were detained. it did add two predator drones to the mix in recent days to help opposition forces as they moved into the capitol. pentagon reporters were told a few moments ago that the u.s. would not commit any boots on the ground in the post moammar qaddafi era but would continue flying intelligen
