but first to jennifer griffin at the pentagon on what happens now. jen? >> reporter: neil, the army colonel at ft. bragg just read the statement. sergeant bowe bergdahl will face an article 32 preliminary hearing, a grand jury trial, if you will, for the following charges. >> sergeant bergdahl is charged unthe uniform code of military justice with one count of article 85, desertion with the intent to shurk important duet yishgs and article 99 misbehavior before the enemy, by endangering the safety of a command unit or place. >> reporter: after a preliminary hearing, a general court-martial hearing could be convened. the judge has the ability to send the case to a general or special court-martial or dismiss the charges. he could face a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of pay and a maximum of confinement for life. sergeant bergdahl is being charged with desertion and more. now the case will wind its way through the military justice system. bergdahl's lawyer has told reporters he has not decided how his client will plead. neil? >> we're hearing this discom
