jennifer griffin is with us from the pentagon. how is the training different this time? reporter: well, the mistake the pentagon made in the past was to try to train whole units of syrian rebels. they would recruit them and then take them out of syria to a training base in turkey. the problem was fining rebels who were willing to only fight isis, not the assad regime. that vetting proved difficult. today colonel staph warren said they're currently training dozens of syrian rebels. >> be the first time we tried to pull fuel units off the line and cycle them through training. that didn't work. this pulling some individuals out of units, vet them, give them some training and capability, and then re-insert them back into the battlefield. >> president obama authorized 50 u.s. special operators to go into northeastern syria in late october. part of the mission was to find more rebel fighters to work with. that's why they believe they are in a position for a do-over in terms of training the rebels. they'll train the forces to better call in air strikes. >> the colonel says they

fox news national security correspondent jennifer griffin is here.hat's going on. >> next round of gitmo transfers, greta, we're told will begin next weekend with two detainees going to undisclosed country in africa. in january the pentagon conducted a bulk transfer of 10 detainees at once. the largest transfer to date. this one which involves about a dozen prisoners can't happen all at once because the pentagon is required by law to notify congress 30 days before any transfers. capitol hill sources tell me that period has not elapsed yet for this latest round of transfers. the first notification went to congress in early march and the second one in the middle of this month. among those slated for release, a 27-year-old yemeni who has been on a hunger strike since 2007. the pentagon does not publicly acknowledge gitmo transfers until after they occur. 91 are remaining. 35 are scheduled to be transferred. currently the 91 who are still at the naval base in guantanamo bay, cuba, of those remaining 35 are cleared for transfer to countries overseas. the

jennifer griffin at the pentagon this afternoon. what did he say the u.s.here. not just people? >> reporter: that's right. in fact in baghdad defense secretary ash carter announced the u.s. will be sending apache gun ships, which, remember, the iraqis say they didn't want a year ago. the additional troops will help iraqi forces retake mosul. >> we are going to place additional advisers with the iraqi security forces now down to brigade and battalion hurricane. >> also being sent, powerful mobile rocket artillery system to provide cover for iraqi troops. it's the first time u.s. forces will be deployed at the battalion level, meaning in smaller units northeasterly the front lines. the u.s. has convinces the iraqi government to allow it to send $415 million in badly needed military aid to the kurdish fightes. the money will go through baghdad. >> the new u.s. troops to be forward deployed but to work on bases. have they given an explanation why now? >> because the pentagon wants to nudge the iraqis to get moving on their plans to retake mosul. the second larg

national security correspondent jennifer griffin joins us live from the pentagon.usly a dark moment in this whole effort. what do we expect to hear about this? >> reporter: officials tell me 16 american military personnel will face discipline for their role in an airstrike by a gunship last october but none will face criminal charges in the form of a court-martial, the highest-ranking us military officer to face punishment is a two star general who was overseeing special forces mission at the time. the pentagon is not planning to release the names of those being punished, their careers are essentially over we are told. the new us commander responsible for the middle east in afghanistan will brief reporters on the investigation. some of the 3000 page report will remain redacted. doctors without borders at the time of the incident demanded an independent investigation outside the us military. they called it a war crime at the time. the us military was attempting to bomb a taliban stronghold 400 yards from the hospital. the report will conclude the tragedy was the res
