jennifer griffin live from the pentagon with more. nnifer, what do we know about the white house response to what secretary mattis is looking for in the under secretary of defense foreign policy? >> reporter: anne partyson served as the assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs from 2013 to 2017. she would work very closely with brett mcgirth who was asked to stay on. she was ambassador to pakistan from july 2007 to october 2010. but it was her role as ambassador to egypt from 2011 to 2013 that has given some pause in the trump administration. she encouraged the state tkeplt to work with egypt's president whose party you'll remember the muslim brotherhood was democratically elected after president mubarak fell. she downplayed the protest so the current egyptian president, a military general who took over in a coup, would likely not like her. sources i speak to in the pentagon tell us patterson is by no means soft on terror. she works very well with the military and was a tough advocate for the u.s. military in pakistan. it'

jennifer griffin has more. >> shepard, the pentagon says the intelligence gathered from the navy seal raid on january 29th are potentially actionable. it's definitely helping us understand the aqap network and further develop it out. this official described it as large volumes of information, including who is connected to who and what is part of the information that the seals recovered from the operation. it's good information, the officials said. we reported at the time the navy seals collected a computer and ten mobile phones that out in and would be scanning them for targets. the u.s. military has been working with other arab special forces in gathering intelligence on al-quaida in the arabian peninsula for some time. we're told aqap represents a greater threat to the u.s. homeland than isis. top officials have been long concerned about aqap's ability to build nonmetallic bombs that can slip through airport screening. the pentagon says over 30 air strikes have been carried out against aqap in yemen the past two nights. that's according to captain jeff davis. ground forces have not

national security correspondent jennifer griffin joins us live from the pentagon with the latest on thisestigation. >> the marine commandant will hold a press conference to address the growing scandal moments from now here in the pentagon briefing room. start with a facebook page called "marines united" a group chat space used by about 30,000 active-duty and former marines, the site was being used for predatory behavior to share nude photos, some of them purely thought it would not pornographic a female marines. the marines targeted young women, marines and encourage anyone who knew them to share photos or hack their instagram accounts. they stuck to these women on social media and egg to each other on to find and share photos, some taken and locker rooms and showers when the women were not aware. others shared by former boyfriends. now we have learned of another site, anon-ib, the same that shared new photos of hollywood stars like jennifer lawrence. it has a military chart room in which members of other services have been doing the same thing. so the scandal has now extended to all of

national security correspondent jennifer griffin from the pentagon on that.l us what you are learning. are the strikes related to the intel gathered from the raid in january? >> officials say not to read in too much into the ramped up efforts in yemen following the raid. they're gathering intelligence for some time. what we do know is the navy seals collected a computer and 10 mobile phones that night and undoubtedly would be scanning those phones for potential targets. we're told al qaeda in the arabian peninsula is -- top officials are concerned about their ability to build non-metallic bombs slipping through airport screening. the new wave of air strikes comes one day after the pentagon announced more than 20 air strikes were conducted in yemen across three provinces against al qaeda overnight wednesday. officials tell me both drones and manned attack aircraft were used in those strikes. we're expecting to hear more from the pentagon about the strikes later today. >> bill: how lethal is al qaeda in yemen? >> it was started by the same terrorist group that
