jennifer griffin, thank you.ell, ukraine and its allies are planning a peace summit and that would exclude russia. national security institute founder jamil jaffer joins me now. good to see you. let me ask you this. how do we get a peace deal if russia is not part of the summit >> well, it's a great question, lauren. this is the million dollar question. this is a plan set out by french president macron working with president zelenskyy. the idea is to bring china, brazil, india, some of the countries aligned roughly with russia and try to break them off from the russian coalition and get them to agree to a deal and take that to the russians. the key question is can these countries get on board with the key parts of the kyiv peace plan which involves the restoration of ukrainian territorial integrity which is a minimum condition for a ukraine peace deal. lauren: in your view can they? >> it's going to be really hard because the russians don't want to give that up and we'll see if this effort by the french president

jennifer griffin is live from the pentagon with more on the mission. >> the additional 1500 active duty will join 2500 national guard troops already on the border. they are meant to act in strictly administrative roles and not to aid to law enforcement. a move used by excessive presidents going back to george w. bush. the active duty troops are pulled from camp lejeune, north carolina, a combat battalion from camp lejeune and the 93 military police battalion in texas. it will free up border patrol agents. mayokas mayokas gave this warning to migrants friday. >> the border is not open. it has not been open. and it will not be open subsequent to may 11th. >> clearly dhs felt there was a need for the department of defense to assist so that they can continue to do their important work. secretary austin approved that request and that's what we're focused on. >> the active duty troops will not be permitted to support migrant processing or escort duties or participate in civilian law enforcement activities. they won't be responsible for property seized from migrants or have direct contact with
