jennifer lawrence shines as this joan of arc character fighting, but one with a heart of gold in the sense that decency and fairness are lacking in this self-centered society. it's an effective action film about death and survival. most of the blood and gore is implied and not seen. that enables the pg-13 rating. there is enough of a love story for the preteen viewer, but not so much as to make the grown- ups nauseous. for them there is the story of what society could become when the government is out of control and children are slaughtered for the amusement of the wealthy, in this reality show world of voyeurism and excess. it is a well told, layered film, with great performances from these colorful characters. its only fault is-- at two hours and 22 minutes, the movie is longer than it needs to be and is sometimes drags trying to include too many details from the book. it is a solid start however, for this upcoming trilogy. my great is a dean's list b +. you can take a look at my chicago exclusive interviews with the cast of the hunger games on my page of the web site wgntv.com/dea
