jennifer. bart riders are dealing with train cars that have no air conditioning. christie smith is live in oakland with what you can do if you find yourself in one of those hot, hot train cars. >> reporter: you know, the short answer is probably common sense, just move to a cooler car that doesn't make you sweat. before you do that, make sure you get on the intercom and let the train operator know that the car that you're in is like a sauna and the air conditioning isn't working. also make sure that you let them know what car number you're in, which is near the intercom above the door inside the train. that way they can get a technician out there to try to get the cool air blowing again. bart says that they can usually fix the problem about 50% of the time rather quickly. so what is the problem? well, bart has had several heat-related delays lately, particularly inland where it's been the hottest. about a third of bart's cars have had their air conditioning on the blink lately. the heat causes computers in the control room and control boxes along the tracks to malfunction, so it

jennifer said it was hot. you say it's a spare the air day. what presicily does that mean? christie smith is at a castro valley bart station with more. >> reporter: good morning. when you see people heading to the bart station at 4:15 in the morning and they have a t-shirt and no coat, you know it will be a hot one. the air quality is not really good. people are urged to take public transportation. public transportation is not free today like it was previously. still you are being urged to take it or koor pool or walk. anything but driving around alone. this is the third spare the air day in a row. the eighth this year. the heat had people doing their best to avoid it like eating ice cream, getting into the shade or staying inside with the air conditioning after we complain about a long and cool summer. speaking of air conditioning, pg&e was recommending conservation after the heat knocked out power to more than 30,000 customers saturday due to a system overload that went on for nearly three hours as temperatures soared to around 90 and above. to avoid the outages in the future, pg&e is s

jennifer. >>> new this morning, crews are working to clean up a flooded road in pleasant hill where a water main break. christey smi ie smith is live a scene, one of the first crews there. man, it's got to be loud for neighbors there. >> reporter: it is. jackhammers and all kinds of stuff going on. i just spoke with one neighbor, he didn't want to go on camera, but he tells me that not only is this the second rupture here in just days, but he said that there have been several other leaks here recently. in fact we walked to the other side and you can see patches, several of themes are on t, on side of the road. crews have been at it so long that we're waiting on a shift change with the contra costa water district. this eight-inch pipe broke yesterday around 7:30 in the evening. for about two hours here, 40 homes in the area had no water. today when people are waking up, they do have water. that's because crews rerouted the line around the water main break. while they make the repair, the broken main is still pressurized. they keep it that way while they make the fix. that means water is still being pumped right out into the
