joining me now, jenny beth martin. also with us, joy reid, msnbc political analyst with the grios.com. let me just get your personal -- how did you know you were targeted for review by the irs as a patriot group, as a tea party group? >> thanks for having me on, again, chris. and we saw in -- well, we saw it was taking months and months and months to get answers from the irs, and they've been stringing us along for years. in 2012, the beginning of 2012, we got, like, an eight-page letter from the irs, several other groups did around the country, asking for things like our facebook posts and comments on our facebook page. all the e-mails we've ever sent. the names of congressmen and senators that any of our supporters from around the country have talked to. a lot of the information that they were asking for was completely -- really none of their business and completely intrusive. >> well, tell me about it from your point of view. are you a political organization? >> we are a non-profit organization designed to do grassr

joining me is founder of the tea party patriots, jenny beth martin.to be here action gretchen. >> gretchen: so first things first, your organization, was it targeted? >> yes, it was. we applied for our 5101 c 4 and c 3 tax exempt status. we still have never heard back. the irs has asked questions of us, like they wanted to know every single post on facebook, every comment that any person who is a fan of ours on facebook had ever made, all the congressmen and senators that are supporters ever spoke to. very intrusive questions. >> gretchen: so you believe that they should now have to pay you back for all the lawyers you've had to hire, et cetera, correct? >> well, we're looking into that right now with our attorneys because it's taken a lot of time. it cost a lot of money. we've also had to help other groups around the country to do what we can to help them as they've had the same kind of questions from the irs. a simple apology on a conference call is not enough by a long shot. congress needs to investigate this and find out how many more lies the irs

host: jenny beth martin, you referenced this storery, made front page in the "new york times," phone records of journalistses seized by the united states. federal investigators secretly seized two months of phone o records for propertier reporters for the associated press and what the news organization said monday was a serious interference with a.p.'s constitutional rights to gather and report the news. back to our topic here about the i.r.s. ryan tweets in. guest: ryan, it's a really good question. the reason that we have to do this is because there are rules where the federal election commission and within the i.r.s. if you are collecting money and engaging in certain activities, you have to disclose those activities. it doesn't mean that i necessarily agree with it, i like simpler, more fair tax code and tax reform happen? absolutely. sure, i'd like to see that. the fact of the matter is for the past four years and before that, the rules have been set up the way they are and i have done my best to make sure that party patriots works within those rules. we can debate whether or no
