thom jensen joins us in south lake tahoe. we saw how slow that was, really going. but we're hearing from cal fire, it's going to be a dicey evening for them. >> reporter: it really is, especially with the winds that are being forecasted. extreme gusts over the summit tonight and really blowing that fire up. and it could move even faster than it did yesterday, which was at a speed five times of what it was moving earlier. that evacuation that you were talking about seemed to go off without a hitch, even though there were some backups and stand stills, not only on these main arteries, but also on many of the tahoe area's famously narrow roads. the caldor fire burned more homes along highway 50 overnight and is now a threat to thousands more as it races towards tahoe. it jumped fire lines and leaped ahead two and a half-miles in the past day, largely fueled by red flag conditions and even stronger winds are expected tonight and tuesday. >> we know the fire's going to be very active. there are reports coming in that it could be more active today than yesterday. >> repo

tom jensen joins us from south lake tahoe. we look behind you and we can barely see anything. >> reporter: that's right. it's a whiteout. you can't see where the smoke ends and the water begins here on lake tahoe. the fire officials and city officials may be a little less optimistic about the movement of the fire. late this afternoon, lake tahoe visitors authority issued a warning to visitors to stay away. telling the tourists who still plan to come to tahoe to stay away until further notice. that was after talking to fire officials and law enforcement officials. they have been saying, like you said, that they believe they can keep that fire out of the tahoe basin. we did talk to wildfire analysts. they believe it could make its way to the basin within a week. they don't want people to get flat footed if they get -- if they have to evacuate. the smoke is decimating tourism in tahoe. businesses want to know if the flames with coming. >> it's unlikely. >> reporter: this man bases on that on the word of his wife who toured and wa
