. >> reporter: this morning, jeremy christian is set to be arraigned in court on several charges, includingurder but this morning, we are learning more about the lone survivor in this attack and the man who helped him in the situation. >> micah came running out, holding the left side of his neck, going, somebody help me, call 911. >> reporter: marcus was waiting for the train with his family friday afternoon when he suddenly heard people screaming and running for safety. that's when he spotted 21-year-old micah fletcher, one of three good samaritans who police say was stabbed by jeremy christian while defending two young teens during a racist rant. >> i wrapped my hand over his to try and keep pressure on his neck and then somebody tossed us a little toddler jacket to put over the wound. >> reporter: micah's family credits the iraq war veteran with keeping the college student alive. >> he'll be with us forever. he's -- he's a lifesaver. >> reporter: micah is now recovering at home. the two other men who stood up against christian died from their injuries. >> clearly what happened on that tr

reporter: tonight, the man accused of the horrific rampage on a portland train, 35-year-old jeremy christian, made a belligerent first appearance in court. >> you call it terrorism, i call it patriotism, you hear me? >> reporter: also there, facing his alleged attacker, 21-year-old micah fletcher, stabbed in the neck. >> i feel very lucky. i wish i wasn't the only lucky one right now. >> reporter: fletcher is one of three good samaritans who stood up to christian for allegedly hurling anti-muslim insults at destinee mangum and her friend who was wearing a hijab. >> he told us to go back to saudi arabia. >> reporter: in the confrontation police say christian stabbed and killed 23-year-old taliesen namkei meche and 53-year-old army veteran ricky best. >> two men who worked very hard to build lives to create connections, to have love lost their lives. and there's nothing more special than that. >> reporter: just one day before friday's alleged attack. police say christian was captured ranting on the same train. >> you got a problem with what i'm saying? . >> reporter: police say the suspect, identified as 35-year-old jeremy christian, harassed two girlsone wearing a hijab. >> two younger girls believed to be muslim. >> reporter: two people who came to the girls' defense were stabbed to death. they've been identified as 53-year-old ricky best and 23-year-old taliesin meche. on facebook meche's mother posted "he was a hero and will remain a hero on the other side of the veil." >> it's horrific. there's no other word to describe what happened. >> reporter: one witness says this video shows the suspect's confrontation with police before his arrest. >> shoot. >> reporter: christian has an extensive criminal past including convictions for kidnapping, armed robbery, and weapons possession. he also has a history of hate speech. on his facebook page he praises oklahoma city bomber timothy mcveigh, calling him a true patriot. just last month christian was at a free speech rally, armed with a baseball bat and apparently giving nazi salutes. >> i'm not here to join anyone. i'm here to be heard. this is a freedom of speech rally. >> reporter: the
