i want to get to cnn's jeremy diamond for the latest. tell us what you have been experiencing. >> reporter: while we were on air with you guys in the beginning of the hour, we heard very large explosions. then shortly after that, as soon as we got off the air, we had sirens sounding above us. and we actually saw the rockets coming from the northern part of the gaza strip and heading towards the town, which is where we are now. there were at least a dozen interception ises that we heard. rocks being fired from the northern part of gaza strip and several loud interceptions from the iron dome system overhead. what's really significant about this is that it comes after a week-long pause in fighting between israel and hamas. the military experts have long worned this would give time for hamas to regroup and resume many of its operations targeting israeli cities. and what's also interesting is that it came from the very northern part of the gaza strip. one of those rockets that we saw came from near the town in the northeastern most city in th

jeremy diamond is calling us from tel aviv, and what are you hearing from the press secretary, because in times this is very different? >> yes, the messages in public and private are quite different, but nonetheless, we are hearing the ramping up of the public pressure from the u.s. officials as they are urging the israeli counterparts to give a clearer timetable and nearer timetable for transitioning the war efforts into the next phase of the military campaign, and that next phase, the u.s. officials are anticipating it is resulting in far fewer civilian casualties and far less intense bomting campaign, and not this all-out ground intensive, but they would like to see targeted raids and intelligence-driven to go after the hamas leadership and this is not what we are seeing in gaza, as we are continuing to see numerous casualties from daily air strikes in gaza and a ground offensive that is going into the population centers deep into the gaza strip. and today, we understand that the defense secretary is to press the counterparts for milestones to what they feel they have accomplished s

cnn's jeremy diamond is in tel aviv. jeremy, explain what happened here? >> reporter: well, this resolution looks very different than the original draft. after days of negotiations, in order to avoid a u.s. veto, this resolution does not call for a cessation overhostilities, it doesn't establish a new mechanism the aide going into gaza as it originally would have, instead, it calls for urgent and extended humanitarian pauses and corridors to allow for the entry of aid and appoint the entry of aid to gaza. now, the united states praised this resolution, but the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. made it clear that the u.s. voted to abstain rather than for this resolution in the end because of the lack of condemnation of hamas for its role and for its carrying out the october 7th terrorist attacks. now israelis, for their part, they are vowing this war will continue up until they can achieve the goal of releasing all of the hostages and eliminating hamas, but there is no question that the focus on humanitarian aid is much needed at the moment. about half of all gaz

cnn's jeremy diamond is in tel aviv. what more are you learning about secretary austin's trip? >> reporter: well, fred, no question that secretary austin's trip comes at a critical moment, and also at a critical juncture in the u.s. efforts to pressure israel to ramp down the kernel intense phase to something less intense during that meetings with the israel establishment, the secretary of defense will be pressing the war cabinet for specific updates on their progress, how far they think they have to go, still, to destroy hamas' military infrastructure, and also specific milestones they are looking at before they can transition to the next phase of the fighting. the senior will be pressing for exactly when they transition to that next phase. u.s. officials have been envisioning a transition focused on special raids, based on intelligence and less bombing campaigns. we saw that last week as jake sullivan was meeting with his counterparts. all of this is from other countries encalling for israel for a more started operations or calling for a cease-fire altogether. these are very

cnn's jeremy diamond joins us line from southern israel with very little. what do we know about the ongoing military offensive on gaza in the israelis, any word what hamas is doing in response? >> the war between israel and hamas appears to be very much back on reports of israeli airstrikes in northern and southern gaza, as well as rocket fire from hamas targeting areas of southern israel in the last several minutes we have seen multiple rocket fires signing in different parts of southern israel including the town of sderot, and areas further south. closer to the kerem shalom crossing, where of course over the last week we have seen over 100 hostages have been freed, many of them through that very border crossing. we have seen of course that this deal has not only seen the release of hostages but also seen hundreds of trucks of aid per day enter the gaza strip, in a must needed pause in the fighting. a much-needed respite from the relentless bombardment of the gaza strip for civilians, living in gaza. all of that appears to now be over, as the israeli milit

let's start with cnn's jeremy diamond near the israel-gaza border. and jeremy, we've seen explosions over gaza all day. what is the israel government, what is the idf saying about the renewed military operations? >> reporter: well, jake, not only has the israeli military renewed its military operation in gaza, it is also expanding it, moving combat operations, ground combat operations into the southern part of the gaza strip and also taking aim at key cities there including rafa as well as han eunice and hamas has been responding in kind. in the last couple of hours we've seen dozens of rockets being fired from just behind me in a part of the gaza strip. i want to show you some of those rockets. and you can see that there were multiple sirens going off, dozens of rockets being fired. in just one barrage i counted 19 rockets being fired from a position right behind me that appears to be in a city in the north eastern most in gaza. what's remarkable utthat, jake, the israeli military for a couple weeks now has been claiming they're in control of the nor

cnn's jeremy diamond is live in tel aviv with the latest developments. jeremy, we're also getting some news that israel has uncovered this massive underground tunnel. what can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah, jim. typically when we see images of hamas tunnels that the israeli military has discovered, they look quite the same. they're very narrow. you'd have to walk single file down these tunnels. but this latest one that the israeli military is now disclosing is very, very large, big enough in fact, according to the military, to fit a large vehicle through it. that may be exactly one of the purposes for which this large tunnel was used. it is part of a broader network of tunnels stretching 2 1/2 miles according to the israeli military. it reaches up to 50 meters underground, and it has everything from electricity to ventilation and communication systems. now, this tunnel doesn't actually cross into israel from gaza, but it is in northern gaza, about 400 meters away from the erez crossing, which was the site of hamas' attack on october 7th. it's one of the

jeremy diamond joins us from shalom crossing. there have been intense negotiations behind the scenes. seems the u.s. is there now. what change the dynamic? >> reporter: it appears the u.s. had concerns initially over that monitoring mechanism specifically, concerns that having the united nations oversee the entry and checking the aid going into gaza when israeli officials want to be conducting those security checks. this could perhaps add an extra layer of red tape that could slow the delivery of aid into gaza rather than speeding it up. it seems those issues have been addressed and the u.s. seems to be in a position where they could potentially, though they won't say it explicitly, support this resolution if it comes up for a vote later today. we're at the karem shalom crossing where they will go directly into the gaza strip. this is the first week israeli officials have allowed aid to cross directly from israel, undergo the packages here into gaza. the need is enormous. the world foot program estimates half of gaza's population

let's get straight to jeremy diamond in tel aviv. do we have any sense whether they will have any influence or leverage to change the direction where this conflict is headed? >> israeli officials know they simply cannot ignore the pressure coming from the united states. they can't ignore the advice coming from the united states. so they have to look at the next phase and how quickly it will come with their american partners. united states is israel's top provider of security assistance, weapons and munmunitions. thigh have to prepare for the war in gaza and the possibility of a widening war in the north with hezbollah and lebanon. today the u.s. secretary is meeting. what he's going to to be looking for is for specific assurances and milestones of what kind of progress they feel they need to make before they can transition to a less intense phase of the campaign, one that's not going to look like what it does now with extensive bombing of gaza, an all-out ground offensive, and instead transferring to something to go after senior hama

jeremy diamond is in israel. jeremy get us up to speed on israel's latest operations. >> reporter: these are really expanding its ground operations into southern gaza over the last several days. we have watched as israeli military has been pushing deeper into southern gaza after focusing its ground operations of the last month merrily in the northern part of the gaza strip. at least one tank was spotted less than five kilometers away from central -- one of the main cities in southern gaza. the israeli military said operations in northern gaza are nearly completed and the defense minister saying that those operations will lead to the breaking of the entire area of gaza city and the north of the gaza strip. but there is no question in speaking with israeli officials the focus in the coming weeks will be in southern gaza. in part because israeli leaders believe many of hamas's leaders have led to the southern part of the gaza strip. and as they are doing that they are coming under intense pressure from the united sta

natosha bertrand is following the latest developments, let's go to jeremy diamond who is live in tel aviv. israel is sharing new details about how this went down, the deaths of those hostages. walk us through what you are learning. >> we learned on friday these three israeli civilian hostages emerge from a building and were shot by a soldier who mistook them for a threat, they were shot and killed it we now understand two of them were shot and killed on the spot, another one ran into a building injured and subsequent burst of gunfire were actually killed, it is not clear why that happened. we also understand they were waving a white flag as they emerged, here is the new photos that we have. new images showing in the building adjacent to where they were killed, there were two white flags with what looks like red sauce spirit on them's spelling out the words sos in one instance. in another instance, saying help, three hostages in the building adjacent to where they were killed and where the israeli military believes they have been holed up for some time. it's not clear they were abando

. >> we start off with jeremy diamond. it's tough how extreme the pressure has gotten on prime minister benjamin netanyahu both dough mets particularly and internationally. how big an influence is that going to have in terms of what he does next? >> there's no question that prime minister netanyahu and his governor are coming under enormous international pressure, but in particular, the pressure from the united states is perhaps the one that can be the most effectiver. that is, of course, because the united states is the biggest supplier of weapons and security assistance to the state of israel, and fullry recognize in israel they need u.s. support in order to continue this war against hamas. there has been a recognition among israeli officials i've been talking to for weeks now if there is a clock that's ticking, that clock is being run in washington. and so these meetings today between secretary austin and israel's war cabinet which follow discussions between jake sullivan and the cabinet and the prime minister of israel

let's go straight to cnn's jeremy diamond live in tel aviv with all the details. jeremy, pretty stunning stuff. what more are you learning? >> reporter: yeah. well, the israeli military has shown us hamas tunnels before but nothing quite as big as this one, jim. what we have seen in the past in terms of hamas tunnels is those that are pretty narrow where you would have to walk single file if you were a group of people to get through it. but this one you could put several people side by side. in fact, it's large enough for a large vehicle to pass through according to the israeli military. this tunnel goes as far as 50 meters underground, and the israeli military says that it is indeed the biggest that they have discovered so far. they actually discovered this tunnel weeks ago, but it was only in the last couple of days that they began showing it to journalists and also putting out this video today of this tunnel. they say that it was a project of yahya sinwar's brother. that's the leader of hamas in the gaza strip. they say that his brother was in charge of this pro

cnn's jeremy diamond is following developments from tel aviv and has more on israeli military's discoverythat hamas tunnel. >> the israeli military on sunday revealing new video of what it is calling the largest hamas tunnel that they have discovered inside the gaza strip. in the past, we've seen tunnels that the israeli military has discovered where individuals would have to walk single-file in order to get through them. very narrow. but this one is quite wide. in fact, wide enough to drive a large vehicle through it, according to the israeli military. it reaches up to 50 meters underground, and it's equipped with everything from electricity to ventilation and communication systems. the israeli military says it is part of a broader network of tunnels that spans 2 1/2 miles or about 4 kilometers. this tunnel didn't cross into israel, but it appears to have been used by hamas within the gaza strip. it comes out very close to one of the key crossing points between israel and gaza, and that is the erez crossing, also a sea kite hamas militants attacked on october 7th then crossed into israel
