joining us now, jeremy greenberg, director of operations for fema's response director.ernoon. >> thank you for having me on. >> as you see this coming, there is a lot of talk of historic, historic storm surge, particularly in the area where it is expected to hit most in the big bend there. does fema have in place what it needs to respond to what this storm is predicted to look like? >> fema along with other federal partners have been working with the state of florida for the past several days to pre-position our incident management teams search and rescue teams and equipment, communications equipment as well as supplies for mass care to be used for those sheltering out of the storm's poath. in addition we'll deploy recovery experts to assist the areas impacted by the storm. >> and i always feel for your teams after the storms hit. when you do rescues oftentimes where people stay, they did not heed evacuation orders. do you have a sense of how many folks are listening to the evacuation orders along the coastline? >> you're right, the most critical point right now is for

. >> we're joined by jeremy greenberg, the director of the operations division for fee ma's responseu for being here. this is now the deadliest u.s. wildfire in recent times that we have ever seen in more than a century. there were all sorts of problems that we just heard. there were problems with the mitigation that could have happened before, there were no sirens that went off. is the government partly to blame for this large loss of life? >> good morning. first and foremost, i'd like to offer our condolences to all of those who have been impacted by this tragic fire. while we know that there will be a review on the actions taken, the most important point right now that we want to stress is the recovery operations, making sure that the federal government is supporting the state of hawaii in their search operations and most importantly starting the difficult process of recovery. >> i know that is really important to the folks on the ground there, the citizens that have lost things, they are certainly trying to figure it out as they go but i do want to understand because there is a l

fema's director of response operation, jeremy greenberg, said more than 3,200 residents of hawaii have registered to receive federal assistance. live now to helena humphrey who's in maui. helena, we're awaiting an update from the governor shortly, but what is the latest situation in terms of the rescue and recovery operation? we are awaiting that update and here at this government building, i'm sure you won't be surprised to learn that flags are in fact now flying at half mast. the governor has been warning people to brace for that death toll. potentially he said to double. we would learn the full extent of it in about ten days. he's been telling people about the efforts engaged in recovery as people continue to comb through the rubble with those cadaver dogs. as of yesterday, only 5% of that territory had been searched and he's also been speaking about more rooms for the hundreds of people who have been displaced on this island, saying that over 1900 rooms have now been made available but let me give you an idea of the picture that we've been seeing as we are going to evacuation shelt

. >> i'm joined now by jeremy greenberg, director of the operations division at fema. e, jeremy. there is so much on your plate. what is your agency's biggest challenge right now? >> good afternoon. thank you for having us on. fema is working, right now, with the state of hawaii. focus primarily on our search and rescue operations. the lifesaving mission of ensuring that everyone has a shelter to live in, has water they can eat, and they can breathe clean air. we will also work with our state partners to ensure that this recovery operation, which is expected to be prolonged, is jump-started to get people back to a sense of normalcy. >> how concerned are you about those environmental dangers that still persist? you mentioned the water, you mentioned the air, how effective can your efforts be in trying to help these residents? >> fema and all federal inter agency partners are bringing every resource at the state of why needs. that includes temporary water for those in areas that are still contaminated. as well as other capability to make sure the state of why he had every
