"good morning america" will have much more on this thousand-mile swath of violent weather in the morning. but that is our report for tonight.

jeremy hubbard is in battered bridgeton, missouri, for us tonight. jeremy. >> reporter: diane, good evening. as you can see, heavy rain has started to fall in this st. louis suburb. tonight, more bad weather after the tornadoes tore apart neighborhoods like this one days ago. the basement is all that's left. the top floor, torn away. still tonight, more severe weather lashing out across much of this part of the country. late this afternoon, twisters forming in dark skies over the dallas area. residents told to take cover. already this month, 39 people have been killed nationwide in tornadoes and twisters are on a record breaking pace in april and some 5,400 severe weather reports in april with hail and high winds. numbers that are certain to grow. the same storm system's bringing those twisters. bringing flooding rains. 10 to 15 inches in some places. flood warnings in 17 states. in poplar bluff, missouri, mandatory evacuations. they're worried the town's levee could break at any moment. in tulsa, flooded roads and submerged cars. in paducah, kentucky

jeremy hubbard is in new york with much more. good morning, jeremy. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. the prices are shooting up literally as we speak. moments ago, as we were setting up for our story here, the attendant came out and jacked up the prices another 10 cents a gallon at this new york city gas station. $4.09 a gallon, $4.13 for full service. and the normal summertime prices are expected to peak early this year, memorial day. just around the corner. a record-shattering 30 cents to 40 cents more a gallon. that's what some analysts predict we will be paying for gas in the coming weeks, well above the all-time high of $4.11, set back in july 2008. >> we've seen gas prices go up a penny a day for the last week or so. and all signs seem to be aligned right now to make gas prices go up. >> reporter: this year could be a budget-buster. that round-trip road trip from atlanta to miami in your suv that cost $280 last year, will run you $95 more this year. traveling from san francisco to seattle and back, gas will cost you $500,

louis heavily damaging the airport there and that is where our jeremy hubbard is this morning with that incredible new video of the tornado as it hit the terminal. jeremy, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. you can see the boarded up windows behind me here. airport officials now say the damage is in the millions of dollars and they've deployed a thousand workers to get this place back up and running. they hope to be 70% operational today, which is an amazing feat when you consider how battered this place was by the twister. security cameras captured the frightening instant the powerful twister strikes the terminal, terrified travelers running for cover from the flying metal, glass and debris. >> i think every one of those glass doors blew in and we all just ran to the bathroom. >> reporter: we know friday night's storm packed winds up to 135 miles an hour ripping the roof off the airport's main terminal, tossing planes around the tarmac. >> i just hung on for my life. the plane was shaking so badly. >> reporter: and leaving this shuttle bus dangling dangerously from a
